You must be abit slow in something. Googling turned out this result : http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?f...87&sec=business

Thanks for bringing that article up, but it doesn't address my question. What broadband was there to speak about in 1996?

I don't think any broadband worth speaking of existed back then. My guess is that the reporter slipped up and wrote broadband penetration instead of internet penetration.

For RM 88 or S$37, we get 1Mbps plan (advertised rate) in Malaysia.  However for S$35, you can get 8Mbps plan from Singnet (http://www.singnet.com.sg/plans_and_services/broadband/snbb.asp?snbb=8Matl).

So what are the reasons broadband is more expensive in Malaysia?

The usual reason given is Malaysia is bigger, so more costs required for cables and other equipments.  This may be true in the beginning.

Another reason given is lack of competition.  We may have at least 2 nationwide 3G broadband providers, but we have monopoly for wired broadband area.

Please enlighten me :-)
P.S.  Try not to complain in this thread, there are many other threads for complaining.

Cost of Singnet 1Mbps plan (http://www.singnet.com.sg/plans_and_services/broadband/snbb.asp?snbb=1Matl) is US$ 13.33 (S$20/1.5). I can confirm download speed of at least 900kbps from US servers anytime of the day.

Off Topic,

When u are comparing Singnet / Starhub with Jaring.

Jaring is definitely faster and low latency comparing with singnet/Starhub.

As a result,
Malaysia Jaring ISP > Singapore Internet ISP.

One of the main reason is, Jaring has lesser subscriber and they are quite strict.

( I own Starhub, Qala(singnet) and Jaring, dedicated server )

The thing is that.
We want faster speed not cheaper.
doh.gif

If they can give the speed. Then I don`t care the price.
IF we got 2 ISP. And have the same speed and stability.
Then I go for price.

Speed and Reliability then Price

Back during the dial up days, we have a choice of TMNut or Jaring. We had pretty good days back then, and TMNut was always on their toes.

Now with broadband there is only TMNut. The TMNuts insists on listing wireless service providers as competition but the wireless networks caters for a very different market. It is not direct competition.

The fact that our country's broadband is still at stone age is testament to Streamyx's monopoly. Plain and simple. The monopoly must end. Now.

Monopoly... Can't compare services like p1W1Max, Maxis, Umobile, Digi and etc cos they aren't broadband..
the stability isn't there. So, TM is a monopoly whether you like it or not, that is a simple truth.

I used to be a student in Singapore, my landlady had a 3mbps Starhub plan which is something like SGD20+ btw, that is shared by 7 users and I get it on wireless via the router and I still get download speeds around 200-300kbps.

I'm back home now, my plan is 1MBPs @ RM110... and what's my dl speed? and I'm on cable here man, not routered wireless.
max... 150kbps... wth?

where is 10mbps? this is such a decent speed for todays' users lor..
1mbps was 'wow' like freaking 4 years ago...

This is not a small problem, its expensive to have broadband, when it is expensive, ppl opt to not have it or have very slow ones.
Where is info and knowledge from these days? well for me, it's really the internet via googling.
This Monopoly is not only sucking money out of ppl's pockets, it's limiting the growth of the Malaysian Cyber society as a whole...

This sucks...period.

i totally agree with u, they use their money to feed fat-ass people who cooperate with them but those fat-ass dont need to move any single muscle but to go eat high calories food, sit on a big chair & go home to sleep, that's all. u know why i say fat ass?? cuz these days, i see many fat guys wear uniform are chief, superior & other high ranks that part with government..

btw, even najib is PM but he's actually a slave to them.. being force to spend his money to feed fat-ass. & that's why in my theory, najib holds many merchants to unable to make money by subsidize food products & those fat ass say " yay, the food is cheap, now i can buy more & eat more than ever"

The argument is that they must protect the business model to make big sums of profit to go back in Khazanah. Money is more important then delivering a good service to them  hmm.gif

So basically normal citizens like you and me must cope with an unfair monopoly at the publics expense just so that these rich people can siphon off public funds tongue.gif

those share holders should ashamed of themselves....need to pay so much to them every year.
