For RM 88 or S$37, we get 1Mbps plan (advertised rate) in Malaysia. However for S$35, you can get 8Mbps plan from Singnet (http://www.singnet.com.sg/plans_and_services/broadband/snbb.asp?snbb=8Matl).

So what are the reasons broadband is more expensive in Malaysia?

The usual reason given is Malaysia is bigger, so more costs required for cables and other equipments. This may be true in the beginning.

Another reason given is lack of competition. We may have at least 2 nationwide 3G broadband providers, but we have monopoly for wired broadband area.

Please enlighten me :-)

P.S. Try not to complain in this thread, there are many other threads for complaining.

That is not my intention :-)

Don't people want to do a good job if given a chance?

So what is preventing people in ISPs doing a decent job?

I am having problems with screamyx too.

But to be fair, u cannot compare a small develop country like Singapore with a bigger developing country like Malaysia.

Its time for government to review its policies on ISP services.

Agree, it may seems like comparing apple and orange.

How about real 1Mbps plan to US for RM 88? Is this too much?

Another reason given is there is insufficient demand for broadband. This does not hold in major cities and towns.

Anyone know whether TM pay more for international bandwidth than ISPs in Singapore? If that is true, any reasons?

Why its expensive? Like everyone been saying around here.. its the lack of competition. Plus Malaysia is still waaayyy behind compared to US or Korea. The net awareness among Malaysians is growing, but we are still lacking behind.  There are still people in the rural areas that do not know how to use the computer.

The bad service like what is happening right now is partly due to poor planning by our government and Telekom Msia.  They have been busy upgrading intranet cables for Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, and many other Corridors.  But they fail to upgrade the international cable lines.
*
myvi5949, any reasons for not upgrading international gateway? Too expensive relative to revenues? Conspiracy theory (Malaysia intranet) ?

It's damn true. Mxx and Mxx like no power to talk. Always diam diam aje.

What we can do is vote for the opposition and hope for a better broadband in BETTERland.
Not BOLEHland.

So the solution is a political one.

Anyone working for a ISP? Want to educate me?

Monopoly is one thing. Chronic underinvestment in telecommunications infrastructure is another. Has no one realised we are still stuck with what Mahathir left us in 2002?

The problem with Malaysia is people want to see things. Like roads. Bridges. Tunnels. A new airport next to KLIA. Not fibre optic cables which are burried underground.

Agree, heavy broadband users in Malaysia are still minority especially among people with power.

Is this information confidential? People in ISPs cannot talk about their industry either the truth is 'shocking' or due to 'self-regulation'.

Hm? where else in the world can you get broadband for Rm66 (US$18) a month?
*
Cost of Singnet 1Mbps plan (http://www.singnet.com.sg/plans_and_services/broadband/snbb.asp?snbb=1Matl) is US$ 13.33 (S$20/1.5). I can confirm download speed of at least 900kbps from US servers anytime of the day.

I download around 30-50G per month. Never experience or heard of download cap from Singnet.
