xandman, could i know what programs are you referring to? and by slow do you mean while multitasking or basic load time.

hahahaha.
normal everyday-use programs. like safari, vlc and such.
loading is faster, i think. or maybe just psychological effect.
but my safari now runs more slowly. sames goes to vlc.

funny, a placebo affect would be you thinking that it runs faster :P

anyways, did you perform an smc reset after installing the ram? a pram reset wouldn't hurt too, methinks

Xandman, my personal observation. During my 2009 Mini days, my programs only seems to load faster once I've clicked it and it starts running from memory and I reopen it. If I've quit it and reopen it, it does not open faster even with extra dedicated RAM. This was felt when I've upgraded the memory to double its size. This was on FCE and Photoshop Lightroom. The bottleneck for me at that time, was the slow HDD speed.

Fast forward now, I believe the RAM made no difference even when I double it, the fast SSD compensates for it.

Take that observation for whatever it's worth.

So if that's the case...adding RAM wouldnt have any performance gain?
hmm.gif

i should try SSD next...

Thanks String!

Hi guys.
after reading about cheap rams...
i've followed suit and bought 8GB ram for my MBP...
150 for 8gb..i say it's not bad...

anyway...
after installing everything went smoothly...no weird errors or anything..
but it seems my programs are all still slow...
hahahahaha...
is there anything i can do to make things faster?
or did i have a very wrong impression that more rams can help speed up things?
Help please!

well extra RAM doesnt really improve performance if ur computer doesnt NEED that extra RAM. it's like buying a 7-seater SUV for a family of 5. there's just no benefit most of the times tongue.gif but it's good to know ur computer can handle higher memory requirements whenever then need arises biggrin.gif

as for SSD, u get to reap the benefits all the time!

also as stringfellow pointed out, you'd feel the performance boost more from an ssd upgrade as apposed to a ram upgrade. even though the improvement is there.

SSD is the best component upgrades of all. Because you feel the speed straight away. It just raw speeds, not computation speed like cpu.

that and depending on usage, this might be a good read.

http://osxdaily.com/2010/10/29/does-your-m...-a-ram-upgrade/

with just firefox, a 720p movie, itunes and jdownloader downloading my weekly shows in the background i've still 1gb of memory to spare.

user posted image

of course it's a whole different story when the movie's replaced with photoshop and or maya running. to which i'm thinking of a ram and ssd upgrade myself.

be sure to do a thorough research prior to purchasing, as some ssd's just would not see eye to eye with certain mbp models, that and speed limitations. i.e <mbp 2011's doesn't support sata 3 speeds and so on :)

Check out the sellers in Garage Sales section, got an OEM X25M 160GB for RM500, only a month warranty though. Works great on my mid-2010 MBP .. the boot up is cut down to only 5sec .. and launching application is a snap too.
