Is Macbook very particular on what type of HDD that I'm gonna install? I bought a 400GB Samsung SATA hard drive, is it compatible?
My Macbook model is a MB061LL/A (Mid 2007 model)

HDD upgrade - it's a breeze, have it done in under 10 minutes for my 18-month-old MacBook.  OS updates, however, took a while but it was a good investment in the RM190 320GB HDD.

Try using disk utility and format the hdd using GUID partition table.

hey guys, im planning to get an external hard drive to store my stuff and also to use for time machine.. i stumbled upon this WD hard drive and it states that it is "formatted for Mac".. what exactly does that mean? what's the difference compared to others which also work with Macs but are not "formatted for Mac"?

it basically means that its already been formatted for you as HFS+ format, which is a native mac format. Other HDDs come naturally as Fat or ntfs formatted which can be changed using disk utility/erase function that lets you format the whole disk to HFS+,FAT . Its just a means to charge more to the unknowing souls.

its just a marketing trick tongue.gif, you can grab any hard disk and format it for a Mac (HFS+). but then windows users cant use it tongue.gif. so when u buy an external hard disk, just format it as FAT, unless you memang dun want windows users to peek into ur hard drive wink.gif

I upgraded to the 320GB Scorpio Black from the original 160GB in my late Nov MacBook alum.

There is a noticeable improvement in terms of application launching and general responsiveness. Firefox and iTunes now at fresh launch takes half the time it use to take. When quickly skipping songs in iTunes, there is no delay like it used to. Startup was 34 seconds, now 27 seconds. As for noise and vibrations, noise-wise the increase isn't much but the vibrations is much more noticeable compared to the stock drive.

If you rest your palms on the laptop a lot, you might want to think twice before upgrading. I'm gonna use it for a few days to see if I can adapt to the vibrations. By the way, if you are wondering, I did a Carbon Copy Clone of my default drive prior to installation.

This is what i'd done to my system, the default 120GB doesn't seem to be enuff for me,results in take out the hdd and changed it wif my seagate external hdd.

Mac: MacBook Aluminium
Good RAM: Kingston KVR DDR3 1066 SODIMM
(done the memtest and no problem at all)
HDD change : Seagate 320GB
Model No: ST9320320AS
Reported by member: aizad02
Comment : the ram runs very well wif the macbook alu. there's no significant performance gain from the increase of 1gb (default is 2GB). But much easier to run many instance and less lagginess using virtual box.
For the HDD,the seagate works very fine,i think as long as u the upgraded hdd thickness match wif the size of the hdd area inside and the RPM not more than the default hdd speed, everything will be just fine.(higher RPM than default could cause u a vibration problem as the hdd just at ur palmrest) biggrin.gif

so I'm planning to get the cheapest Mac Mini. Plan to upgrade to 4GB DDR3 RAM and maybe 500GB HDD. Which RAM and HDD recommended? no need fancy performance stuff, just normal user hardware enough.

you can do voodoo and try to revive the fan from the dead, on a serious note bring the mac to a the nearest apple service center for a replacement of the fan, theres no other way.

Did some research and decided to buy 2 sticks of 2GB Kingston DDR3 1066MHz RAM and a WD 5400RPM 500GB HDD as a replacement. Should be no problem?

i would say just go ahead, i just did that a week ago and nothing is happened to me(touch wood) and they are working great.
but i havent update the firmware to 1.7 as lots of users make complaint on crashes and their machine slow after they have upgraded the firmware.
of course there are lucky guys anywhere.........just dont dare to take the risk.
