The winter wear fashion in Malaysia is really bad, trust me.

You'll feel embarrassed wearing the jackets sold in stores such as Universal Traveller when you are in the colder countries. You'll stand out like a clown in a nunnery.

My advice is to get a nice pullover or turtleneck, a warm scarf, a trenchcoat or a nice jacket (no fluffy colorful ones please >.<), gloves, warm socks, waterproof leather shoes and a pair of thick jeans. Thermal underwear is not required unless you are going to areas of -15 deg C or more.

Same feeling about the 'winter' wear in Malaysia. Beside being way out of fashion, most are just not practical for actual wintery conditions.

Moreover unless you are constantly outdoors a lot, there is no point to pile on the many layer of clothings as you'll be moving between warm indoor and cold outdoors. Just get a good trench-coat.

Yeah I agree on the style of winter wear in Malaysia... when you go overseas you look hideous. And you so obviously stand out as a tourist..

I'll be going to shanghai this December. No central heating. sad.gif

I'll be piling on..

T-shirt, thick vest, fleece jacket.
Jeans, scarf, gloves.
Long johns (at night)

Considering if I need boots to warm the lower part of my legs?

I've seen girls wearing thick tops but short skirts and low cut boots at temperatures below freezing. Not sure about you but to me it just doesn't make sense rclxub.gif

Oh no definitely not short skirt. Maybe these girls are just used to the cold...

I guess I'll scout around Shanghai for boots when the need arises. Cheap. innocent.gif

Cos after that I'll be heading to Australia for my studies during autumn/winter so I guess I could recycle some of the winter wear I buy.

oh, this was explained by my tour guides. Its because they are not staying outside too long. All of them are going indoor.
And all indoor like shopping mall and office is heated up.

What's the price range for winter clothing in UniqGlo? Is it cheaper than UT?

Not really cheaper but the quality..& lightness...Super feather light & even the RM299 weight ~ 200gm nia..almost like normal thick Tees..And it's actually performed well after I tested it..Can feel immediate warmness..Those thicker UT/Winter Times Down jacket..Once you wear it..you have to wait few min to feel the warmness

The RM299 is the cheapest up to RM500 or probably more...They also selling /promoting thier own Thermal inner wear (Longjohn) for RM59.90...

"Branded" apparels in Seoul is not that much cheaper compared to Malaysia. At most I think only diff by RM100.

Anyway, an advise; if one wants to own a down jacket, go borrow from friend 1st then when touched down at any place for winter, go shop for winter clothing. Don't really think UT's stuffs are worth buying.

Bought the 'bomber' jacket from FOS Subang Parade in 2008 before my trip to Tokyo in Feb (the same year). It's super cheap at RM150 and it's from Ecko(Red). I like the jacket as it's not colourful (it's dark brown with furry sides for the hood. Sleeve & hood removeable via zipper if needed).

Luckily in Tokyo at that time - they all wore the same style of jacket. Thought I was gonna be outdated. Phew. Hehe. And it kept me warm the whole time.

I will never ever go to Wintertime & UT to buy winter jacket - so ugly and expensive. Wonder where they get their stocks from.

They got their stocks from either Koeaor China-lor...Yeah very limited & those offering >20% are ugly. Only nicer abit Down jackets but limited design sold at 10% discount during their sales..haha

Anyway for those not realy into fashion, UT/Winter Times can liao. Because from what my experience there, the average ppl also wearing cicai wan..haha..and those older generations wearing flowery winter clothing similar to those hulu-hulu places in China..You will not be out of fashion in Seoul for sure..

Check these few photos taken on type of winter clothings worn by Seoul locals...Infac those Tourists wearing more trendier than Seoul locals haha:

Myeondong area- The most trendier pasar Malam similar to Ximending in Taipei:

Anyway, her's my tips for those haven't experience mild to xtreme cold temperature based on my recent trip to Seoul (I experienced milder temp of ~ 10C till on 15/12 last week when temp dropped to minus 11C and the windchill of minus 20C!

-For temp higher than 5C, probably thicker jacket (feather / polyster) is OK wth probably aditional sweaters /long john. I fcheap down jacket, probably no need sweater /long John

-For Temp higher than minus 5 till 5C , down jacket (atleast 90% down) without long Johns is sufficient. You no need any wool sock to protect your leg too. However, scarf and thermal glove is important. to protect your fingers, beck & ear.

- For temp below minus 5 till -minus 20C, A good Down jacket, wth long John /sweater + good leather thermal glove and scarf is important...Otherwise your fingers & ear can freezed within minutes...as wha I expereinced haha

Dont buy in Msia....it's expensive n not fashionable at all...u'll look like alien lor....especially if u're going to London or NYC.

Check the local weather first n if it's not that cold, turtle neck/ sweater n good jacket will do. We're in Boston now and its -4C...no need to use long john...

What to pack??
1) Turtleneck/sweater
2) Jacket with hood e.g North Face, Columbia is good...
( in US ebody wear NFace)
3) Muffler (In Msia can get RM10-15)
4) Beanie, Leather Gloves
5) Winter boots ( can buy later when u'll arrive)

6) LIP BALM is a must (Burts bee is good)
7) MOisturizer (CREAM) NOT lotion....
8 ) Vitamins, medications.....

from my experience, if u dont apply the cream, u'll suffer from dry, chapped skin as winter is very cold n dry...

hope this helps....smile.gif

Can-lah..Even those UT, Winter Times down jacket (Ensure atleast 80 to 100% down) and it can even withstand minus 10C without long john. lower than minus 10C, you probably need thermal long john dy.

The most important thing other than Down jacket is a good quality thermal glove & also scarf. Without these, be prepared to get your hand & ear freezed

down jackets are super 80's fashion.

north face and columbia are popular in N.america including canadian region.
kathmandu is popular down south in the oceania region.

i've been wearing my jacket for the past 13 years. although expensive, (roughly bout 800 brit pounds back in 90's) its already paid for itself over the years. still wearing, still no problems in freezing sub temperatures and its definitely not down feather.

who on earth wears down feather ?

and stimix i heard u lost your plasma ? kesiannnnnn
