I think the quality n material of clothing really matters. It is pointless wearing 5 to 6 layers if the material does not stand cold...

well, having stayed in places that have harsh winters (-30C on a bad day) for 5-6yrs..
I can tell U, U just need a good jacket, anything under can be your regular summer clothes.
if u choose to wear a SINGLE good quality + material jacket I am pretty sure U'll feel freezing cold.

gloves depends..
plan to spend >1hr outdoors and afraid of cold, yes U do and most likely U want to keep your hands in the pockets of the jackets to keep warm.
else just keep them in your jacket.
super afraid of cold get mittens!

lotion? anything for dry skin would be fine.

heavy winds, u may wanna consider ear muffler. or wear a cap to cover your ears.

For me...
-5 c , i'll be wearing a shirt , a fleece jacket , a winter jacket with great wind protection + hood . Fleece scraf would be in my bag and a wool glove.
wool socks with normal converse shoe. LoL....

That would keep me very warm..

Fleece jacket : light weight jacket , keeps u very warm. great for indoor.
Lotion : Vaseline biggrin.gif
Gloves : It's not that heavy, bring if u have. If not, go there only buy lo. Not like it's super expensive.

Winter in germany = most of the days rainy & Windy.

you don't need umbrella there.. since the wind is too strong.

hood would be handy ... or a cap or something... smile.gif

care to tell period of time you will be in germany?
i think -10c is too low for germany. even in russia (slightly south of moscow) the most extreme temperature will be -10 to - 18c in early january and that temperature will probably last only 1 week then back to -5 to -10c .

my advice is to check the perceived temperature(take in wind factor). in accuweather.com that is called realfeel.

if air temperature and average to strong wind then need long johns and good winter coat. snow cap important to protect head and ears. gloves and scarf depends on individual. Good boots that is wind water proof and enough traction so that not so easily fall on ice. if got experience of walking on ice you can ignore the traction of shoe as sliding on ice is much faster than walking lol.

few ppl today wear long johns. Chinese ppl do in China, reason no central heating and fire do dies out at 3am in the morning. do need it to keep warm!
in Western countries, buildings are heating wear them so uncomfortable.

imagine wearing long john and layers of clothes in a place heated to >25C.
Koln is about 2hr drive. only have a nice church, and walking on the streets checking out the shops. no worry man, no long johns can tahan.
that worried just wear loh... too hot just go into the bathroom and start stripping!

i've stayed at calgary for more than a year and i didnt even touch long johns.
the trick to staying warm is to cover your chest with a good jacket , preferably a skiing jacket since u're a newbie,
wear a shawl or a scarf to cover your neck and when it freezes and gets too difficult to breathe, use the shawl/scarf to cover your mouth and nose and ears.
then make sure your feet are warm, leather shoes are good since u're going to work. they might get slippery though.

your legs will be fine dude. and try not to wear inner wool else u'll itch the whole damn day.
if you really cannot tahan, use thermal ski wear.
