Q: Where do you stand on tethering?
A: There’s two pieces needed to support that: client side and working with carriers. We’re absolutely supporting tethering in the client side in iPhone 3.0, but we’re working with carriers around the world to see when they can add tethering support on their networks. But we are building that support into iPhone 3.0.

Nothing really major, I presume or they would have gone into detail over it.

Just a marketing tagline, probably, like the "hundreds of new features" line they use every time they release a new Mac OS X version..

since Swirly MMS can be used on 1st gen iPhone, I wonder what is the "hardware limitation" on the 1st gen iPhone that make it unable to use the MMS app by apple blink.gif

data per say is P2P between only iPhones currently not between other handsets except for vCard transfers..songs and things like that cant be transferred if thats how i understood it. so as for iBluetooth u have to pay for it, thats one thing and you have to jb...there is no jb with the 3.0 os update!

@pelvin
yes, bro. iPod Touch would need to pay $9.95 for it while iPhone 2G users won't be able to utilise Stereo Bluetooth & MMS, even they're on 3.0.

@PeeEl
there's only peer to peer connectivity via bluetooth. IINM, no files transfer (except vCard). correct me if i'm wrong.

quoted from http://live.gizmodo.com/

"The new multiplayer connectivity allows you to bring up a dialog that lets you find local devices. The services provided are Automatic Discovery over Bluetooth (no Wi-Fi), no pairing, Bonjour, and isn’t just for games."

"But this isn’t just for games, it works for ANY P2P application. For example, apps that can send business cards to another phone, in a handshake-like manner."

Q: Could you qualify a bit more about the peer to peer. It looks like it’s available across the two iPhones, but it seems like you can do peer to peer with other Bluetooth devices.
A: It’s really a device to device Bluetooth connection. It’s 1 to 1, using Bluetooth and Bonjour to discover other devices and make an IP connection.

Q: So you can control devices…?
A: Yes, now you can, with third-party applications, control and talk to accessories over Bluetooth.

@c_calvin:

Q: Is there a physical hardware problem on the first-gen iPhone that prevents it from doing MMS.
A: It’s a different radio, so it is a physical issue.

Here's a summary of what the new 3.0 has ..

-App and developer functionality-

Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and other info-swapping.
Paid apps will have the potential to be subscription fee-based, and can include optional paid content that can be bought from right inside the app.
Developers can now build apps that call out to Google Maps, and can also finally bring Apple-blessed turn-by-turn to the phone.
Devs can also connect with hardware accessories over in their apps now, such as a blood pressure monitor -- or perhaps a keyboard? Connectivity works through the dock connector or over Bluetooth.
Long-promised push functionality will at last be included, but apps won't run in the background.
Developers can add streaming video and audio to their apps, along with in-game voice use.

-General functionality-

Cut, copy and paste. At last! You can shake the phone to undo and redo the action, and it works with both text and photos, allowing Mail to send multiple photos at a time.
MMS, along with forward and delete for multiple messages.
A2DP stereo Bluetooth.
Unlocked Bluetooth functionality on 2G iPod touch.
Spotlight has been added to a new home screen page to the left of existing pages, allowing for universal search on the phone.
Tethering is built into 3.0, and Apple will work with carriers on that -- who will have the last say on its implementation, most likely.
App Store will be available in 77 countries.

-Apple apps-

A new app called Voice Memos which lets you record notes and reminders.
A revised Stocks app, with news stories and a landscape view.
Landscape keyboard available in all major apps.
CalDAV support has been added to Calendar, along with subscriptions support in the .ics format.
Apple's major apps have all been expanded with search functionality.
Note Sync to sync your notes.
YouTube account support.
Form auto-fill.
Phishing protection.

myb Apple think that EDGE connection is not worth for MMS while supporting email in the same time (while on 3G u can have speedier data rate)

or myb Apple is starting to ditch support on their 1st gen iPhone. yeah it's almost 2 years already since it's release, and now they r leaving feature for that device one by one in each time. and it seems to make sense considering that 2 years is the contract period for the AT&T iPhone subscriber. so myb in another year (making it 3 years) the support for it will be totally dumped, and for now it's just a sign that Apple is starting to.

so yeah, i'm saying to myself that looks like it's time to move on and pick another gen of iPhone. i'm waiting for this june/july for a new one.
