QUOTE(MangO @ Jun 11 2009, 11:08 PM) Wonder about the development of the apps? Will current 3g users be left behind? Have this sneaking suspicion that slowly we will be pushed to 3gs. Anyhow I doubt I'll buy another unit and wait for the version after. Not enough new features to convince me to upgrade. There is currently discussion of a possible splitting of applications for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G[S] just like how the iPod Touch 2G is differentiated from iPod Touch 1G due to a more powerful processor. The iPhone 3G is OpenGL ES 1.0 compliant while the iPhone 3G[S] is OpenGL ES 2.0 compliant. And it is not backward compatible with 1.0. Assuming applications developer would like to take the full advantage of what iPhone 3G[S] can offer and I am sure they will, there will be applications specifically for iPhone 3G[S] leaving iPhone 3G behind. So the App Store will most likely show compatible apps depending on what is connected to it. I guess the iPhone 3G[S] can still run present games that is compliant to OpenGL ES 1.0 (its hardware has support for 1.0 also) so there'll be a transition period hopefully long enough for iPhone 3G. |

QUOTE(manchurr @ Jun 12 2009, 03:34 AM) unlikely I would expect the iPhone 3GS price to be adjusted at current exchange rate. Unless NZ suffered from further recession after the launch and the currency devalues further. In fact the electronics here are generally priced higher compare to the rest of the world. |

Looking at Apple's new policy now, of not phasing off smaller capacity iPhones, I'd say the NZ iPhone prices will stick.
Before:- 8GB = NZD979, 16GB = NZD1129 Now, since the 8GB is still available, and 32GB in being introduced, I'd venture the pessimistic, with the 32GB being the top of the difference between the 8GB and 16GB, meaning it could be priced at NZD1279. And also guys, Malaysia's (as well as NZ's) launch IS NOT July 9th, take a look at the keynote again. It says July '09, meaning July 2009. Maxis could drag this on till the very end of July for the launch. Added on June 12, 2009, 2:18 amTo those saying that the iPhone 3G[S] not being a worthy upgrade, it's graphical capabilities may shock you! QUOTE Users may be "shocked" to see how powerful the iPhone 3G S is for 3D graphics, according to an UberGizmo report. When released the iPhone 3G S will feature a faster CPU, more RAM, and a Power-VR SGX GPU which supports OpenGL ES 2.0. According to UberGizmo this GPU is faster than the old one in two fundamental graphics metrics: - Triangle setup: This defines how many triangles can be processed per second - Fillrate: a measure of how many pixels can be modified per second. Both metrics are key to increase graphics realism. But that's not it: the iPhone 3GS does not just use sheer brute force to make games look better. Thanks to the more programmable architecture of the Power-VR SGX, developers can now use techniques found on PS3 and Xbox 360 games. The article likens the difference in graphics to the improvements made from Half Life to Half Life 2. Look at the screenshots below to get a visual idea of the enhancements. Its been suggested that the difference in graphics between iPhone models will cause a split in the App Store. ![]() [Half Life = iPhone 3G] ![]() [Half Life 2 = iPhone 3G S] Akin to PS1===>PS2 if you ask me. AppStore probably gonna have two versions of the same game, one with the enhanced version for 3G[S]. This post has been edited by stringfellow: Jun 12 2009, 02:18 AM |

I'm soooo gonna upgrade to 3Gs (and might get it locally too). Those who says that the 3Gs is not much different from 3G, they should think again.
Faster processor more RAM better graphic processor magnetometer anti-oil n fingerprint coating video recording better camera with auto focus Last time the upgrade from 1st gen to 2nd gen are not that significant as they only add 3G and GPS. Same processor and same RAM for both generation. I know the Jailbreaking scene will find a way to enable video recording on 3G model but it will not have the same 30fps with autofocus as the 3Gs (since it does not have the capabilities to do so). With all the graphic intensive app especially games, the new processor + graphics processor is really great (Sim 3 kept on crashing on my current phone). iPhone 3G wont' have all the features as 3Gs even on the same 3.0 firmware as it's more geared to the new hardware. Thats why Cycorder can't achieve the 30fps as 3Gs. It's a hardware limitation. |

I dont want to think this, but the more I scrutinise things, the more I kept on thinking that those who brush aside the upgrade as insignificant are acting subconsciously on their buyers remorse. I dont see anything wrong on commenting or criticising on things, but give credit where it is due, even if your budget does not allow you on getting it. Brushing aside the new upgrades as "Meh!" when deep inside you want one, but cannot afford it straight away, is just weak IMO.

How to buy contract-less iPhone 3G/3G[S] for USD499/599/699 on Apple.com
Someone found a way to do just that on the US online Apple Store page. Apple would probably close that loophole down, but that price point would probably give insights on how much the new iPhones will be priced, tier-wise. iPhone 3G 8GB ($499): MB046LL/A iPhone 3GS 16GB Black ($599): MB715LL/A iPhone 3GS 16GB White ($599): MB716LL/A iPhone 3GS 32GB Black ($699): MB717LL/A iPhone 3GS 32GB White ($699): MB718LL/A Converted to RM@ USD1 = RM3.7, AND remember to add 30% for tax/Apple tax/Malaysian-stupid-crappy-kastam-pun-mau-makan-tax:- iPhone 3G 8GB ($499): MB046LL/A = RM2,400 iPhone 3GS 16GB Black ($599): MB715LL/A = RM2,880 iPhone 3GS 16GB White ($599): MB716LL/A = RM2,880 iPhone 3GS 32GB Black ($699): MB717LL/A = RM3,360 iPhone 3GS 32GB White ($699): MB718LL/A = RM3,360 This could probably the "buy outright" price from Maxis, but will definitely be subsidized cheaper for clients with 12/24 months contracts. |

I want one The moment I see Apple's comment that it will have twice the speed and RAM, I knew something powerful is in the works. When I saw Pre having Cortex and PowerVR SGX, fuh! This is great. I'm not really excited about iPhone OS 3.0 cause its kinda expected. But it is the vision of great games and apps from such strong platform that is enticing me. Hehe! |

i have been thinking day by day until 3GS will be release, i also first time don't want to upgrade because i think it should be ok with 3G i use, but the more i think about it( faster proc, more ram, auto focus etc) the more i want to get this phone, and might considered myself to tight a contract with maxis since i can get it locally and i still use maxis as my provider.
i always with my iphone 24/7 and with the upgrade of 3GS i can do more, that's why i think its better for me to get those phone when it release here.. just like bro string said, people say they dont want to, not worth upgrading but deep inside you want it. Just like me! haha.. |

QUOTE(frequency @ Jun 12 2009, 11:50 AM) wow, guys shall read this Yes, this is the time where smart phone innovation is improving just like how the PC industry had a big jump in performance. Cortex A8 just the beginning. The next iteration would be multiple of these cores. This is where real multi-core comes in. Not those Nokia/Symbian phones lar... this lar that lar... dual-core lar... With the exception of N96 (??), where it has dual ARM9 core. Look, thats multi-chip, not dual-core. And its not smart when it comes to power efficiency.http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3579&p=1 the graphics capability of the IPhone 3Gs is almost a DirectX 6/7 class GPU (Riva TNT2/GeForce 256). =.='' it is so fast that my salary increment cannot catch up with... PowerVR SGX has finally trumped other competitors are major smartphones uses PowerVR chip (Imagination Technologies). I wonder where is ATI IMAGEON. Ooh... Qualcomm-Broadcom licensing problem... |
