Just to share bit on the Mount KK hike. Many years ago, I trained at Batu Caves for my hike. Started off with only 1.5 round (up and down = 1 round) and at my peak after 2 months of twice or thrice weekly climbs, I could do 7 rounds non-stop. I was bloody happy and feeling fit.
I'm someone who sweats and get hot super easily. And I love cold weathers. Took the Mesilau route and though I took my time amongst the 4 of us, my legs did well and didn't feel strained at all. We started our climb to the peak at around 2:15 am and weather was great. And the moment we started the first several flight of stairs, I started sweating profusely which I expected already. My mistake however was unzipping my jacket, even just a little. My inside T-shirt was wet due to sweat and when wind blew, it gave me a chill that I could not shake off. After the checkpoint, my legs was doing well, but every several steps, I kept having the shivers. Soon, my body gave up and it was my mind that kept me going. But I think 800 meters from peak, I did not stop shivering and eventually gave up and went back down to the check point hut. Went inside, and continued shivering for the next hour. When light came ard 7am, I started my hike back down, with tears flowing down my cheeks. My mistake .. 1. I should have brought a spare T-shirt to replace my sweat soaked tee. 2. Should not have unzipped my jacket. 3. After resting, I should not have went down, but make my way up instead even if I was on my own. I didn't think about it then because I was so disappointed with myself that I didn't make it up there with my friends. Just sharing so that no one makes the same mistake I did ... one of my regrets in life. |

Hi, everyone. A few questions to ask all of you.
1) My friends and I are planning to hike up Gunung Nuang (via Hulu Langat) next month. How long does it usually take to hike up AND down? Also, what equipment and food should I bring? I'm concerned that I may get very hungry due to the long duration. 2) Where can I buy torchlight/headlights for hiking in Cheras/KL area? Preferably torchlight and budget around RM80-100. 3)Does one need a guide to go up and down Gunung Nuang for first-timers? 4) I have a pair of running shoes (Saucony Kinvara v5). I know this is a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. If I use this pair of shoes to hike up broga Hill and Gunung Tok Wan, will it hold together? I know it's unsuitable, but I'm just curious. |

Its trail is very rocky and red mud so thin sole is highly not advisable. thick sole is highly recommended. Last year, this gunung beat me to knee (seriously, i kneeling to go out, since my knee exhausted of fluid i think) instead of my previous experience of G7s. |
