Just to share bit on the Mount KK hike. Many years ago, I trained at Batu Caves for my hike. Started off with only 1.5 round (up and down = 1 round) and at my peak after 2 months of twice or thrice weekly climbs, I could do 7 rounds non-stop. I was bloody happy and feeling fit.

I'm someone who sweats and get hot super easily. And I love cold weathers. Took the Mesilau route and though I took my time amongst the 4 of us, my legs did well and didn't feel strained at all.

We started our climb to the peak at around 2:15 am and weather was great. And the moment we started the first several flight of stairs, I started sweating profusely which I expected already. My mistake however was unzipping my jacket, even just a little. My inside T-shirt was wet due to sweat and when wind blew, it gave me a chill that I could not shake off.

After the checkpoint, my legs was doing well, but every several steps, I kept having the shivers. Soon, my body gave up and it was my mind that kept me going. But I think 800 meters from peak, I did not stop shivering and eventually gave up and went back down to the check point hut. Went inside, and continued shivering for the next hour. When light came ard 7am, I started my hike back down, with tears flowing down my cheeks.

My mistake ..
1. I should have brought a spare T-shirt to replace my sweat soaked tee.
2. Should not have unzipped my jacket.
3. After resting, I should not have went down, but make my way up instead even if I was on my own. I didn't think about it then because I was so disappointed with myself that I didn't make it up there with my friends.

Just sharing so that no one makes the same mistake I did ... one of my regrets in life.

Hi, everyone. A few questions to ask all of you.

1) My friends and I are planning to hike up Gunung Nuang (via Hulu Langat) next month. How long does it usually take to hike up AND down? Also, what equipment and food should I bring? I'm concerned that I may get very hungry due to the long duration.

2) Where can I buy torchlight/headlights for hiking in Cheras/KL area? Preferably torchlight and budget around RM80-100.

3)Does one need a guide to go up and down Gunung Nuang for first-timers?

4) I have a pair of running shoes (Saucony Kinvara v5). I know this is a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. If I use this pair of shoes to hike up broga Hill and Gunung Tok Wan, will it hold together? I know it's unsuitable, but I'm just curious.

1) Normally it take 6 hours up and another 6 hours down. Bring a rain coat, whistle, head lamp, energy rich food like banana, energy bar.

2) Evergreen

3) No.

4) No, best to get a proper hiking shoe.

1 ) Energy bar, nuts, banana & water.
2 ) MR DIY, buy a headlight and a small torchlight for spare
3 ) Nuang path is very direct and many peoples hike on weekend
4 ) You may need a shoes that have better grip. I tried to hike with a croc & running shoes, slippery. Not adviseable

For me, the most challenging trail is between the car park to lolo camp. I entered 7pm arrived almost 10 pm. in the way back, its become nitemare. Its trail is very rocky and red mud so thin sole is highly not advisable. thick sole is highly recommended. Last year, this gunung beat me to knee (seriously, i kneeling to go out, since my knee exhausted of fluid i think) instead of my previous experience of G7s. sad.gif

1) Hike up to the peak for average person is 6hours, down will be less than 6hours. A light weight backpack can stuff in some food and drinks (I know some one can hike up and down that less than 4hrs .. brows.gif brows.gif )

2)I think Ace Hardware those energizer headlight is good enough .. if not mistaken was around RM40 ++

3)No need , the path to the peak is very obvious .. plus there's alot of the sign board put up as well.

4)Broga hill and Gunung Tok Wan the terrain is good enough for normal running shoe but in Nuang you need a pair of grippy shoe and hiking pole just incase a day before encounter heavy rain and become muddy.
