Hi jess7,
U might want to consider bringing along some band-aids, in case of blister or cuts. Do bring along some salt for leeches (it's rare, but have seen ppl encountering it). BTW, have you been to nuang before? FYI, it's bout 5 hours up and 4 hours down at slow pace. Moderate pace will be 4 hours up and 3 hours down.

PS: Would like really love to see a pic of your dog carrying his own things smile.gif
*
hey pseudo, thanks for your advice, lucky me, no leech today smile.gif
my neighbour and i managed to only hike till kem lolo as we had two 7 year olds with us, a silky terrier and my adopted stray, Woody.
but Woody did not carry his backpack today as i was not sure how high the stream or river would be
but here is a picture of him with his backpack when we jogging
i don't think he will be carrying his backpack for hiking as it is quite bulky and he tends to go through the road less travelled

today was my first time a nuang and it was great! hope tp reach summit the next round!

so if you do go hiking and see a brown coloured dog with red collar, that's my Woody
extreme friendly

Wow thats great. But In my opinion if you want to push harder next round shouldnt bring kids! dangerous!
*
Thank you so much for your concern
but those kids are not bad
boy fell a few times and laughed it off shocking.gif
i have a feeling they will follow me and my dog all the way...

to all trekkers, hikers and campers,
what are your opinions on dog owners who let their dogs loose during trekking, hiking camping?

here's my story:
Woody is human friendly, but vary of other animals around but pose no threat unless i command
he does not go far and comes when called
but somehow, there are the minority who made complaints as they are afraid of dogs (so far, 2chinese uncle, i understand they have fears)

reason why i do not leash my dog is because the leash actually pose a threat to both, Woody and I.
but i leash him when we get to flat land.

any advice?

Hi jess7. No prob, but i guessed it was kinda belated? lol. as for the leeches, even the regular hikers seldom encounter it. but you never know how lucky you would be. hehe. Woody looks so HANDSOME!!  drool.gif

With regards to letting your dog loose while hiking/trekking, IMHO I'm cool with it. In fact, I have seen several owners bringing their dogs along, unleash. Not nuang, but other hills/mountains. And yes, I do think it's unwise to keep your dog on a leash while hiking as it might be dangerous. The thing is, only you know that your dog is well-trained. BUT how would the strangers know that? Hence, the fear and/or perception will be there. Actually, if you're lucky you might have encountered several stray dogs hiking alongside you (and acting as the guide and pacer  smile.gif ) today.

Anyway, my opinion is, if you are planning to go to the summit next time, to leave Woody at home. Explore the terrain for yourself first, and decide if you want to bring him along next time. This is because the terrain can be pretty steep from Lolo to Pacat, although it would still be manageable. But from Pacat to Pengasih (false peak), it can be very steep. And from Pengasih to the peak, you might need to lift yourself up in certain places. Do google up the pics to get a heads up. Also, please take note that certain area can be very slippery if it's raining, because of the soil. Finally, please be reminded that the cut-off time should be around 2pm (meaning you are strongly advised to start your descent, regardless of where you are at that time).

Gosh...I just realize my post is so long-winded. Anyway, good luck and am looking forward to meeting up with Woody next time!  tongue.gif
*
thanks for the advice!
woody actually had a leech on him while i was in water but before i plucked it out, he ate it... blink.gif

alright, i will explore first before bringing Woody, for both our safety laugh.gif

i'm not sure if i'm posting in the right thread but i would love to discuss about hiking and camping equipments
as for now, i have most of the essentials all ready

how bout towel?
anyone have experienced using sea to summit drylite?
and what size would be most appropriate?
i'm contemplating between the pocket or the drylite rclxub.gif

Wanna ask if there is any good hiking shoe to remember?
I only been to 3 hiking trips & I already spoiled two of my sport shoe (One Adidas & one Power).

What sort of attribute(s) should I look for when shop for the next one?

Thank you very much in advance.
*
i've been using adidas kampung goco rubber
it is super good!
have not slipped at all biggrin.gif
going hiking with it is fine but walking on normal tar road or any flat road makes shoe abit heavy
i've used it up gasing hill 3x, gunung nuang 1x (up to kem lolo tongue.gif )~
i'm going apek hill sunday biggrin.gif

i love gasing as a starter, bringing all beginners there for a good hike, sometimes too lazy to go far, gasing it is!

QUOTE(gs20 @ Aug 9 2013, 06:22 PM)
Today is the first time I been there, alone.
Not familiar with the area, and in close to complete darkness, I got lost.
I went into the side way (away from the main trail) & ended up at no where else & it is very steep IMHO at those paths.
Luckily they lay out the tiny paper pieces, I follow that out to the park in the middle & ask around folks there for exit.
That hill is not that high & the main trail is not that challenging but the compound is big & got many splits.
The scenery not as nice as Broga, but I didn't climb up to the look out tower (maybe you can get a better view there).
The crowd is not as much as compare to Saga/Broga that I been to (or maybe I was too early today.)
*
the route i usually take is from the main entrance, then all the up to the tower, then turn left to the suspension bridge, make a loop, then back down, towards the stream, then back up the tower, then walk the exit route to right out the playground nod.gif

lol..complete darkness..i never get the chance to hike on complete darkness..

nvr been to broga yet..

QUOTE(gs20 @ Aug 9 2013, 08:44 PM)
Apek/Saga are actually two hills that joined together, which you can travel from one to another without realizing you're already there.
Saga is consider the newer trail that got developed.
The entrance to Apek is from Cuepak & the entrance to Saga is from Taman Saga (obviously, the similarity in naming)
I only been there once which is around end of June this year & I went in from Taman Saga.
To me I feel like the ascending part at the early stage is tiring as the steps are quite big, once got past there the rest are nothing to talk about, just like you're walking along the flat bumpy road. The trail are quite wide.
The point that worth a visit is the water fall.
*
wow...
so meaning the entrance from taman cuepacs is closed already?
http://waterfallsofmalaysia.com/114bukitapeh.php

if not closed yet, can i use this map as guidance?
http://www.mycorezone.com/main.php?section...&article_id=127

or would you recommend which entrance i should go from?
this would be my first biggrin.gif

No, just that there is a new entrance from Saga now.
I never been to the entrance from Cuepack so I can't comment much.
The map is still valid.

IINM, the logging trail itself is 4km without shade.
please expect to climb on a bare rock using only rope. this is the most challenging part. never let go of the rope...

some write up and photo can be found in the klhiking meetup group.

is yours with studs? no need to worry, adidas kampung is awesome (especially on rocky surface)! Wasted RM400+ for Columbia's hiking shoe before I bought this, and I have been using it ever since.  smile.gif

Handsome! But no backpack?  tongue.gif
*
Yeah, with studs, very sturdy but went and bought another one for just in case
seller is myvicious666, selling adidas kampung goco rubber, the rubber is thicker than the normal ones
so far, i bought 2, neighbour bought 2 also
used it for gasing 4x, nuang 1x, saga 1x and coming rajah 1x tongue.gif

Woody loves hiking with me and loves exploring, his bag tends to get stuck between trees and bushes
so to save his life and my energy, i decided to not let him carry his backpack when hiking
he only carries it on his runs with me
i filled 2 500ml water bottle and let him carry hehehe

seriously, he chased roosters and chicken when we were at gasing hill...
better preserve the bag than let Woody tear it apart!
i am very lucky to have such a well behaved stray dog, that's all

you can bring your dog along too!
it is very fun and you can bond together even more!
