The reason for solid liquid fuel is that you can fill up pretty much anything, kerosene, petrol, diesel etc..

You can never board a plan with a gas canister which is why you will need to buy gas supply when you do a oversea hike. The problem when you buy oversea is that there is no standardised mounting for gas canister.. Thus making Solid fuel burner much versatile at the cost of weight due to more complicated designs.

I bought myself a titanium gas stove as it is much lighter and I thought I will never do oversea hike. Most oversea hike that I might do will be guided and food provided thus no need to bring my own gas stove.

yeah. i know.

talking about solid fuel tablet :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexamine_fuel_tablet

quote
QUOTE
"Esbit's Material Safety Data Sheet states combustion can create formaldehyde, ammonia, nitrogen oxide, hydrogen cyanide and ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal disturbances, and kidney damage. [1] When burned, the chemical oxidation of the fuel yields noxious fumes, requiring foods being cooked to be contained in a receptacle such as a pot or pan, and burned tablets will leave a sticky dark residue on the bottom of pots. If they are stored or used under damp conditions then they can break up while burning and shed burning fragments, although this claim is hard to verify or reproduce."

its scary when remembering my childhood scouting days. i wonder if all those scout teachers back then knew the danger... shocking.gif shocking.gif shocking.gif

in the long run, yeah, weight matters.

i know that the screw on type is around RM70 - RM100 while fire maple brand starting already around RM 250 (or around that).

I already did my research on solid fuel and I heard it was toxic in a way. I don't know how many people know that, because last time i went window shopping for stove, someone bought a bag pack full of solid fuel.

at the moment i'm more inclined to maple leaf type of stove. easy source of fuel, and while flamable, are less explosive (compared to gas) and not too close to source of fire (compared the screw on type).

but then there is also liquid alcohol based stove, but i don't have much info on that yet.
*
Many ppl use solid fuel (Hexamine) coz it easy to use and the price is cheap here. Cost RM10 and come with stove or RM5 for the solid fuel only. Yes the flame quite smelly and your mess tin will be black in no time. :) Or wait for a clean solid fuel like Zip Military Fuel to arrive and available here
http://www.thebushcraftstore.co.uk/zip-mil...exy-13754-p.asp

If you don't want a smelly flame..use alcohol stove like Trangia spirit burner that cost around RM60. Or you can make your own burner if you want to. Then buy the fuel at hardware shop (spirit) or any farmasi (alcohol).

If you camping solo and cook only a little..get a gas canister stove. Much easier to use. It won't explode unless you throw the cannister into a fire. :LOL

But if you wanna masak quite a lot than better get a liquid fuel stove though it a bit leceh coz need to pre-heat the fuel first. Somemore need a bit maintenance once a while like cleaning the jet burner.

Not for me as I know where to get clean water source from the jungle. I used to use the purification tablets when I am new into hiking. Taste a little weird.

Aww ic. I never been to Nepal before therefore I do not know how's the water quality there. If you are okay with the tablets, you could opt for that. Share with us the pictures upon completion. Which trek by the way?

I too prefer filteration compared to tablet.

this year or next year I'm might try lifestraw or sawyer filter. i'm might focus more into saawyer - since it helps filtering into dehydration pack.

Just did Mt. Fansipan.. Difficult hike for my standard, especially with a very fatigue legs to begin with.

Extremely steep and later on became mud feast. Weather was perfect that day, could have been worse if it rains.

My friend invited me to hike Mt. Mera, guess I am not ready to do a 20 days hike yet. pass

Difficult hike for your standard? Your stamina is quite good and Fansipan should not be a problem for you if you are to hike Rinjani before.

No need to head so far to try long hikes. Try Gunung Tahan via Kuala Tahan (7 days) or Gunung Noring (6 days).

I was extremely tired from doing Vietnam Mountain Marathon, could not even wear a shoe because all my toe nails are swollen.

I bought a fake Teva sandals and hike with it. The muddy part is a nightmare as mud goes between my soles, my feet start sliding between my shoe soles as well.

There's a cable car construction going on, the trail is badly damaged by the construction as it is a mud wonderland now.
The starting hike is very enjoyable, very scenic and cooling.

We have seen a triangle head, bright yellow/green snake too, freak the hell out of me as I am the first one to see it.

Lack of proper shoe is the main cause why I am so tired.

Snakes just too common. You will get used to see one if you look around properly.

Why wear sandals to hike? I never like sandals even I am to trek simple hills or even waterfalls.

Show us some pictures.
