O'Shea and Evans make Milan flight
QUOTE
John O'Shea and Jonny Evans climbed aboard Manchester United's flight to Milan on Monday morning, despite both struggling with injuries.

Sir Alex Ferguson is desperately hoping one of them is fit to face Inter in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

With Nemanja Vidic suspended and England duo Gary Neville and Wes Brown both ruled out through injury, Ferguson seemed to be facing a defensive crisis when Evans limped out of Saturday's win over Blackburn with an ankle injury, joining O'Shea, who has a sore heel, on the sidelines.

While the fitness of neither Irishmen can be guaranteed, the mere fact they were able to make the journey on Monday morning suggested Ferguson is optimistic he will be able to call on one of them.

O'Shea would be the most likely, although Belfast-born Evans declared his willingness to play if required on Saturday evening.

Ferguson is also without young player Rafael, who is thought to have picked up a knock against Blackburn on Saturday, but does have Darren Fletcher who could come in.

With Rio Ferdinand fit, Ferguson does at least have one of his first-choice central defenders available as he bids to guide United towards a repeat of last season's success in the competition.

Indeed, the Red Devils have not lost in Europe since they were beaten at the San Siro at the semi-final stage two years ago.

That loss was to AC Milan, although with Inter now cruising at the top of Serie A, midfielder Michael Carrick admitted there could be no harder test for United, who could land an 18th domestic championship this term following Liverpool's failure to beat Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

"Inter are as tough an opponent as we could get right now," said Carrick. "They are in good form at the top of their league.

"We are both probably amongst the top four or five in Europe at the moment but that is what the Champions League is all about. You have to defeat the best if you want to win it."

Carrick watched on last week as Inter overcame an AC side including David Beckham in the Milan derby, although that did not come as a surprise.

"Inter were good but we know what to expect anyway," he said. "Going to the San Siro to play Inter is a massive game and a big test for us.

"Over the past two years we have been very consistent in the Champions League.

"We have not suffered any defeats since the last time we went to the San Siro and hopefully we can keep that run going."

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson will hope he can patch up his back four for Tuesday's clash with Internazionale, but only six defenders travelled with the squad to Italy, two of them carrying injuries.

The 22-man Reds squad departed Manchester airport on Monday morning headed for Milan in fine form domestically. However, concerns over the fitness of Jonny Evans (ankle) and John O'Shea (heel) add to the problems caused by the absence of Nemanja Vidic, Gary Neville, Wes Brown and Rafael.

Vidic is serving out a one-match suspension, Neville and Brown have both been nursing injuries, while Rafael it appears picked up an injury during the 2-1 win over Blackburn at the weekend.

The six defenders that have travelled are Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, O'Shea, Evans, Fabio and Eckersley.

That said, other than Anderson, the rest of the squad can report a clean bill of health.

New signing Zoran Tosic travelled with the squad for the experience, but the winger cannot play as he is cup-tied.

Travelling squad
Goalkeepers: Van der Sar, Foster, Kuszczak.
Defenders: Ferdinand, Evra, O'Shea, Evans, Fabio, Eckersley.
Midfielders: Giggs, Park, Carrick, Nani, Scholes, Possebon, Gibson, Fletcher, Ronaldo.
Forwards: Rooney, Berbatov, Tevez, Welbeck.

Red Hot Ron

Ronaldo and goals go hand in hand. Here we examine his net-busters in more detail…

Christmas kickstart
In Ronny’s first five seasons at United, 68 per cent of his goals came after Christmas. He had 10 before Santa arrived this season, suggesting he’ll finish the 2008/09 campaign with 32 goals if he continues at the same rate. Fingers crossed!

Ronny’s United goals, month by month:
Aug 2
Sep 5
Oct 9
Nov 13
Dec 18
Jan 17
Feb 15
Mar 12
Apr 9
May 8

Total = 108 goals

Can he play you every week? Ronaldo’s favourite opponents…
Wigan Athletic (7 goals in 7 apps)
Fulham (7 goals in 12 apps)
Aston Villa (7 goals in 13 apps)
Newcastle United (6 goals in 10 apps)
Bolton Wanderers (6 goals in 10 apps)

So many defensive injuries sad.gif

Let's hope for some heavy rain in Italy to cancel out Inter's technical superiority and passing game.

After all, it rains a lot in Manchester so our guys are used to it biggrin.gif

Nope, we lost to Milan during heavy rain when Kaka destroyed us few seasons back.

Edit : My point is it'll be better for both teams to have true strength and battle equally rather than depending on any outside factors that'll weaken the teams. After all, we are confident with our team dont we ?

someone already mention about this.
the liverpool visit is right after the 2nd leg of the 2nd round of the champions league, where the winners and losers already decided.
therefore, does that give effect to the OT battle, at least psychological?
example, one knocked out, while the other one progress..

btw, anyone the knows the site to check player index and stats for every match (with the field position too)?

Hopefully we will not risk an unfit Evans/JOS. We did the same mistake on Vidic in few seasons ago against the other Milan team sweat.gif

Nope. As mr mizi said, Milan destroyed us during rain.

I still have that last goal by Kaka in mind. VDS slipped and could not reach the screamer by Kaka, because of the rain and the wet pitch.

Eh, I forgot I quoted this lol.

4-5-1 sounds kinda risky, but given Inter's defensive problem, and Inter's midfield overpopulation, probably good. But what's Rooney doing on the left? lol. He should be on the right, CR on the left.

But anyway, LINEUP PREDICTION

Manucho
Manucho-Manuch-

oh damn I gotta stop doing this

VDS
Fletcher - Ferdinand - Evans/JOS/Evra - Evra/Fabio *gulp*
Ronaldinho - Carrick - Scholes - Giggs (eventhough he doesn't play on the wings anymore)
Rooney - Berba

Giggs to be replaced by Jason
Gibson off for Scholes
Nanny for Ronaldo? Nah.

I don't know whether is a good decision if we put Berba at CB.
He is tall and might be the advantage our defensive line.
If Berba at CB, Tevez will be partner Wazza at front line.

I say stick Fabio at right back. He is a natural right footer after all even though he usually plays at LB.

I was thinking the same with Fabio at right back but his second game? Would go with Fletcher personally.

Berbatov as CB? Cannot la he so lazy.
Sure give us heart attack when he plays one touch with VDS sweat.gif

For Inter game, we may need some hardworking player like Jason Park, Tevez, Rooney, Fletcher etc...
Their tireless running will stop Inter free flow and enable us to do some damage from counter smile.gif
