Build your own arcade cockpit. laugh.gif

0-60 finally delivers. Here’s a downloadable how-to on building our arcade, with some help from Electronic Arts.

How long has it been? Actually it’s been, get ready…564 days since we told you in issue 3 that there would be downloadable instructions on our website on how to build your own racing console. Sure it’s a been a long time: we have a new president, the King of Pop died and there have been six issues of 0-60 published since, but we’ve finally come forward with our guarantee of a PDF download. Sure we posted some hand sketched drawings, but now, thanks to Electronic Arts, we have a serious set of CAD drawings for you to follow, 66 pages in all. Everything from the material list to painting to final assembly is laid out clear and concise for all you nerds out there to put together.

Be sure to check out the Need For Speed: SHIFT Prize Package giveaway also. You have the chance to rip all our precious electronics out from under us. They include: a 40″ Samsung LCD TV, a PS3 Slim and a Logitech G27 Racing Wheel.

And in case you didn’t know, Need For Speed: SHIFT comes out today so grab yourself a copy, some tools and a six-pack…of soda and get to work. Well, what are you waiting for? Get going!

0-60 Magazine/Need For Speed: SHIFT Site

We also want to give a special thank you to Tony Scotto because without his expertise in woodworking and tool use, we’d probably be out a couple fingers and work definitely wouldn’t be as fun.

testing the 'full demo' version of the game
the car is quite easy to control compare to rFactor/LFS simulators.
Less spinout compared to GTR2. Feels like the car tyres really stick on to the road.
but maybe it is just like what the developers said from autosimsport, real car are easy to drive slow and fast. I will wait and see before giving out any more comment.
BTW, i do feel like the car behave a little bit like RBR. Maybe the tyre physics is written by one of the developer from RBR.

give this game 8.5/10

Things i like :-
+Beautiful cockpit view that makes me feel i own that car
+Nice engine sounds
+Sense of speed when u start to reach 200kmh
+most of my fav cars are in the list

The only thing that giv me frustrations is :-
-Option for control couldnt be changed during racing.
-Replay music is lame.
-No mouse control.
-Ai is noob when cornering, and like to test ur reaction skill by suddenly applying brake in front of u.
-Damage modeling is badly done
-cannot save l33t replay
*

Bang on the monies
Eero Piitulainen of Richard Burns Rally has developed a totally new tyre-physics model which is mainly responsible for the new physics

for me, i used the easy way. change tuning back to simple. no more boingboing XD
hahah i got 25% hang of drift di, apparently, like 'real life' it uses throttle to steer. doh.gif but unlike real life, there's no real sense in the front grip, always undaundaunda one doh.gif

stage 4 cars cannot be upgraded, only tuned. what a bummer. i need better brakes on the veyron which at this moment, is set to 100% front brake bias for inane reasons by the computer doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif

oh yeah, i agree london track is a beeatch. 1st straight over the bridge into a 7 left, there's a strip of pavement in the middle which looks like the road surface. 1st time down that corner, i flew and crashed doh.gif
*

Oh there is a post where I quoted someone that had the same problem as you hacking the FFB file so that he can feel the front more, but only if you're using steering

hmm, I am going to get a webcam and Freetrack to emulate TrackIR for rFactor after raya, but I am now wondering if it works as well for SHIFT. brows.gif should be fun to see the corner even before you arrive

I think for those who dislike prostreet before, just forget about this game...

Anyway, once again i want to critics the game engine they used, My proc only got 70% load in both core, and the 4850 even low, only 50-60% during the chase game mode, thats why the FPS is bad, only manage to get 30-35fps , and micro shuttering as well like undercover before...really sad...

I like prostreet as well... icon_rolleyes.gif

i don't know how to decribe it, something like although ur FPS is constant or high, let say at 40fps, but u still can feel the laggy...hmm, you just compare Dirt, GriD to NFS shift you will know that...both at same FPS but u can't feel the smoothness in NFS...this thing is OK if the game is FPS game, but for racing game, i can't feel the realism...hope u understand.. hmm.gif tongue.gif

lol, I do. All my racing games for me must be at least 80FPS for smooth controlling. 40 feels sluggish

I think u need the LCD which can do >60fps before you can get the 'real' 80fps ...but in this case, micro shuttering, even 295GTX and 120Hz LCD also useless...

nah, don't really need to have more refresh rate. it compensates with a smoother picture.
QUOTE
A regular CRT monitor (somewhat outdated now) runs at up to 85 hertz, meaning that any performance reached by the game over 85 frame/s is discarded. For that reason it is not uncommon to limit the frame rate to the refresh rate of the monitor in a process called vertical synchronization. However, many players feel that not synchronizing every frame produces sufficiently better game execution to justify some "tearing" of the images.

Also, certain elements of a game may be more GPU-intensive than others. While a game may achieve a fairly consistent 60 frame/s, the frame rate may drop below that during intensive scenes. By achieving frame rates in excess of what is displayable, it makes it less likely that frame rates will drop below what is displayable during heavy CPU/GPU load.

This choppiness is not a perceived flicker, but a perceived gap between the object in motion and its afterimage left in the eye from the last frame. A computer samples one point in time, then nothing is sampled until the next frame is rendered, so a visible gap can be seen between the moving object and its afterimage in the eye. The reason computer rendered video has a noticeable afterimage separation problem and camera captured video does not is that a camera shutter interrupts the light two or three times for every film frame, thus exposing the film to 2 or 3 samples at different points in time. The light can also enter for the entire time the shutter is open, thus exposing the film to a continuous sample over this time. These multiple samples are naturally interpolated together on the same frame. This leads to a small amount of motion blur between one frame and the next which allows them to transition smoothly.

The solution to this problem would be to interpolate the extra frames together in the back-buffer (field multisampling), or simulate the motion blur seen by the human eye in the rendering engine. When vertical sync is enabled, video cards only output a maximum frame rate equal to the refresh rate of the monitor. All extra frames are dropped. When vertical sync is disabled, the video card is free to render frames as fast as it can, but the display of those rendered frames is still limited to the refresh rate of the monitor. For example, a card may render a game at 100 FPS on a monitor running 75 Hz refresh, but no more than 75 FPS can actually be displayed on screen. As a result of the extra rendered frames, this would lead to a displayed frame to sometimes show more than one rendered frame on the screen, thus simulating the motion blur effect.

use the 75hz, picture will feel smoother, but as your graphic card CAN run the game at higher FPS, turn off Vsync. you should feel the car respond much better
