Quality first, not quantity

By Dr MILTON LUM

Recent media focus on the number of housemen and the attitudes of some of them raises questions about the quality of medical education, and by extension, the quality of healthcare patients will be receiving in the future.

ONE of the basic principles taught to all medical undergraduate and postgraduate students is Primum non cere, ie, first do no harm. It is a reminder to doctors to always consider that an intervention can lead to harm to the patient, however well intentioned it may be.

Choose a good medical school, students told

PETALING JAYA: Students who want to take up medicine should assess their own capabilities and choose universities with good international ranking, said Malaysian Medical Association president Dr David Quek.

“They should choose a school with good international ranking and not because it is cheap and easy to enter and pass,” he said.

Dr Quek said this in response to news reports yesterday that quoted Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin as saying that medical courses offered by recognised foreign universities would be checked to eliminate doubts about their standard.

He said it was difficult for the Government to monitor all schools overseas.

He said that while many Malaysian parents wanted their children to study medicine, it was not just for anyone as the job was stressful.

He said seven doctors had mental breakdown each month and the highest number in recent months was 20.

While parents might think their children who scored seven or eight As in Form 5 were intelligent, Dr Quek said Form 5 and matriculation results were not the best indicators.

“They should go through A-Level studies or sit for the STPM and obtain at least 2As in science subjects. This will indicate if they can grasp things fast and are mature enough in their thinking,” he said.

He also said that if top Form 5 Science students decided to do a foundation course, the course duration should be one to one-and-a-half years and that their acceptance should not be automatic but subject to satisfactory standards.

Govt urged to cancel Lincoln College’s licence

B Nantha Kumar
| May 21, 2012

A PKR leader accuses the Health Minister of deliberately ignoring the controversy surrounding the private institution.

PETALING JAYA: A PKR leader today sought the withdrawal of a licence given to Lincoln University College (LUC) to run an offshore medical programme in the Ukraine.

Malacca PKR vice chairman G Rajendran, referring to a report that LUC was one of four private colleges that were fined last year for breaching a moratorium on nursing courses, said it was “strange” that the government had ignored this bad record when approving the licence last Nov 29.

However, it is not clear whether the breach was discovered before or after Nov 29.

The disclosure of the offence came last March 26 from Deputy Higher Education Minister Hou Kok Chung, who was replying to a question in Parliament. The moratorium, to address the problem of oversupply of nurses, has been in place since July 2010.

Rajendran said the government must withdraw LUC’s licence.

Govt moves to increase health science professionals

GOMBAK: The Government is increasing access to education in health sciences to meet growing demand for professionals in the field.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said in South-East Asia alone there was a shortage of 1.2 million healthcare professionals and it was expected to increase to 1.8 million in 2020.

“We will increase the capacity of higher learning institutions to take in students in the field from 55,000 in 2010 to 150,000 in 2020,” he said in his speech when opening the new building of Pusrawi International College of Medical Sciences (Picoms).

The Government will be investing RM1.4bil in this endeavour with an expected return of roughly RM2.8bil, he added.

Muhyiddin, who is Education Minister, said as of now, seven public universities and 62 private universities offer courses in health sciences with a total of 80,096 students taking up those courses.

“Therefore, I welcome Picoms’ efforts at expanding the health sciences field through research and infrastructure,” he said.

He lauded Picoms efforts at establishing strategic partnerships internationally with institutions such as the University of East London and Al-Azhar University.
