There is no doubt that JRPG genre is slowly dying due to their old tradition gameplay. I have always enjoy western RPG ever since the good o' PC days. From Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Night, Fallout series, Planescape Torment, Diablo series and many more. JRPG was one of my favorite genre back in the PS1 era. Suikoden, Xenogears, FF series, Crono Cross... but the gameplay has basically remains the same until now.
I think for this generation, I've pretty much grew tired of the JPG's 'slow' gameplay. You are forced to watch the 'voiceless' dialouges, force to go a linear path and force to save at a save point. Without major breakthrough in JRPG gameplay formula, I think it will slowly be forgotten... until one day will risen again like a phoenix (hey, WRPG goes through the same period isn't it?). For this generation, there are four RPGS that I enjoy. Oblivion, Fallout 3, Lost Odyssey and Mass Effect. These four games have wasted more than 400 hours of my total life span. Well, same could be say to the WRPG... the system is always the same, skill-based. But one thing WRPG has that is over JRPG is the setting. JRPGs are always, i mean it, ALWAYS the same, fantasy world, magic, save the world from the evil sinister... On the other hand WRPGs have a lot of variances, medieval ages, future, space colony, ancient world, just trying to survive, or the same save the world, magics, guns, lightsaber etc etc etc...
Pprobably nobody likes The Last Remnant here, but i already passed 300th hour mark |

Games like Tales of (In japanese version)
THe trailer they are showing are most likely showing the seiyuus' (voice actror) voice of each character. all those seiyuu are from various of famous anime/game in japan. That's wad sold me of getting Japanese copy of JRPG. I have the japan copy of vesperia here and haven even gotten the console yet and also their battle system. you will see they only spend 20-30percent of the trailer telling us bout the stories. The rest is just voices and battle system. |

Tales of Vesperia FTW!!
for me, wrpg & jrpg is totally different... wrpg more 2 advanture/action rpg... jrpg more 2 turn-based/tactical rpg the most different i can see is, wprg can customize ur own character where jrpg is fixed character if this 2 rpg genre can split into 2... i choose oblivion for wrpg & tales of vesperia for jrpg |

i mean the character face and attribute
so, in wrpg u can make "you" in the game while in jrpg u play other people as you |

QUOTE(SWATwolf @ Dec 30 2008, 10:25 AM) of coz but they are slowly opening up to it. with the release of fallout 3, i'm sure some of them will try the game and end up liking it. it has almost all the elements of a standard JRPG from turn based battle (VATS) to save the world kinda storyline. again, without the androgynous-ness of JRPG's character. I would say, the last remnant actually is a very interesting RPG. forget of the technicle flaws, its a superb experience in the gameplay.
perhaps its just me, i enjoy to read through the voiceless dialougues, as i can take my time to read through it, understanding it. wRPG sometime its just too fastpace for an old folk like me about the always pretty boy faces in jRPG, well, it is their style and I enjoyed it. if too realisticsits another kind of feeling already. |

^You need to try some of the classic wrpg...it's like textbook man
wrpg like to emphasize on the role-playing part, what if i do this...what if i do that. Jrpg usually have a fixed storyline & very linear experience. By the way, alot of you didn't mention what's your favourite. You can't have everything! I know it's hard...I love Fallout 3, Fable 2, Oblivion, Too...many, wut This post has been edited by PrivateJohn: Dec 30 2008, 07:35 PM |

One thing JRPG truly excels is getting the players to play multiple runs by implementing FREAKIN time-sensitive side quests, MISSABLE secret equipments, SECRET secret bosses, secret this secret that...

hehe. the only JRPG that i played more than 3 times is FF : Tactics (if you consider that RPG).
other than that, once i know the ending, terus masuk shelf. never touch till dunno when. thing about WRPG is you can always do run according to different build of your character and select something else to see the outcome. i did it with Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment and even KOTOR. |

True, very true... in JPRG after u beat the secret boss, made the ultimate secret equipment, beat another ultra secret super boss, get another ultimate ultra secret weapon, the only difference is attack higher, defense higher, maybe cooler looking outfit/weapon, and in some occasion, a super-duper-full-screen-spamming-flashing-blinding-10-digits attack skill.
Hehe, i still remember playing Baldur's Gate 2 for half a year, tried like every kind of combinations (ok la, not all, it's impossible to try all, i tried those that i thought cool)! |

My personally favorite RPGs of all time:
1. Xenogears (simply the best JRPG I ever played!) 2. Fallout 2 (F3 is much inferior than F2) 3. Suikoden 2 (Man... the ending is really damn touching) 4. Planescape:Tourment (Great story twist and excellent gameplay!) 5. KOTOR! 6. FF VII (needless to say, this is the first RPG I ever played and I enjoy it!) 7. Crono Trigger (great story!) 8. Crono Cross (I like the pace of the story and the music) 9. Vagrant Story (is this consider as RPG? Too bad Japanese don't make this kind of game anymore... gameplay is deep and this game is tough!) 10. Diablo 2! (Give me back my 200 hours! Or 300... I cant remember...) |
