There is no doubt that JRPG genre is slowly dying due to their old tradition gameplay. I have always enjoy western RPG ever since the good o' PC days. From Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Night, Fallout series, Planescape Torment, Diablo series and many more. JRPG was one of my favorite genre back in the PS1 era. Suikoden, Xenogears, FF series, Crono Cross... but the gameplay has basically remains the same until now. I think for this generation, I've pretty much grew tired of the JPG's 'slow' gameplay. You are forced to watch the 'voiceless' dialouges, force to go a linear path and force to save at a save point. Without major breakthrough in JRPG gameplay formula, I think it will slowly be forgotten... until one day will risen again like a phoenix (hey, WRPG goes through the same period isn't it?). For this generation, there are four RPGS that I enjoy. Oblivion, Fallout 3, Lost Odyssey and Mass Effect. These four games have wasted more than 400 hours of my total life span. My personally favorite RPGs of all time:
1. Xenogears (simply the best JRPG I ever played!) 2. Fallout 2 (F3 is much inferior than F2) 3. Suikoden 2 (Man... the ending is really damn touching) 4. Planescape:Tourment (Great story twist and excellent gameplay!) 5. KOTOR! 6. FF VII (needless to say, this is the first RPG I ever played and I enjoy it!) 7. Crono Trigger (great story!) 8. Crono Cross (I like the pace of the story and the music) 9. Vagrant Story (is this consider as RPG? Too bad Japanese don't make this kind of game anymore... gameplay is deep and this game is tough!) 10. Diablo 2! (Give me back my 200 hours! Or 300... I cant remember...)
