thanks for the info ^^

is egg cake(zi tan gau) coz is soft for the small hamster coz they still cannot eat other food yet tat time

i feed them wit bengy hamster food n lots of veggie rite now
*
I don't think anyone fed cake to their hamster before but I think it's not safe for them since it's made for human consumption.

Bread still ok if feed once in awhile as snack and in small amount.

You can try Nezu's smoothie.

as for the mealworms 3-4 worms will do enough.
i think you should cover those platforms with something...their legs can get stuck easily...and habitrail ovo isn't a good cage...its small...it would be ok if there are extensions...but the problem is hamster have to lay on their backs to drink water.
erm....althought all habitrail cages aren't good(sorry, i'm anti-habitrail tongue.gif)...but as for your preferences perhaps you can go for a habitrail Safari which is considered better that OVO...or perhaps a good, not costly and spacios tank or a bin cage.
*
Habitrail Safari & Playground are no longer in production. If he is lucky, he might find the last 1 in some petshops sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif

hi..wanna know..y cannot feed cabage to hamster??....i just notice the list...but my hammies gila makan cabbage...
*
Google is a very useful tool. Should try it sometimes.

http://www.hammysworld.com/index.php?p=cabbage
QUOTE
Feeding cabbage to hamsters should be avoided. Although cabbage possesses valuable properties for humans of having sulphur, chlorine, and iodine content. The combination of sulphur and chlorine causes a cleaning of the mucus membranes of the stomach and the intestinal tract, this acts as a laxative. Cabbage also acts as a diuretic, a substance that causes increased urination, and tends to increase the secretion and flow of urine. Broccoli can also have a similar effect. A small quantity of cabbage may be fed to a hamster if he is constipated. Feed it raw as the longer cabbage is cooked the less digestible it becomes.

http://www.geocities.com/calhamassoc/HamsterHealth.html
QUOTE
Things you should avoid giving to you hamster:  Lettuce, cabbage and brussel sprouts since they will cause gastritis, bladder trouble, and in the case of lettuce, liver or  kidney problems.    Also avoid tomato, pickles, chocolate,  orange, potato tops, rhubarb, onion and garlic since acidic foods  are not good for your hamster.  Steer away from any  excessively sticky foods as these may gum up the hamster's dry  pouches and may actually cause a pouch to become impacted.

erm...a question here...blurjoey, do you mind telling why cannot feed them instant oats? thanks in advance! i was just wondering  hmm.gif
*
Usually instant oats have sugar and salt added in them. Also there isn't much nutrients in instant oats. That's why is better to get rolled oats to feed your hammies.

There are many forms of oats: http://www.formerfatguy.com/articles/oatmeal/oats.asp

From http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/547899/+20
QUOTE(1deception @ Nov 11 2007, 05:21 PM)
The difference between the two,is Rolled Oats is not processed and nutrients are still intact,as compared to Instant Oats. This also makes Rolled oats longer time to cook than instant oats. Between the two, choose rolled oats. This is just like choosing between brown flour (use to make capati etc) and white flour, brown rice and white rice, wholemeal buns and white buns etc.
*
Hopes this answer your question tongue.gif

blurjoey, feed oats in small amount... how small? i only got 1 ww..

rolled oats, erm..good....i got a lot.. i use it as my mealies's bedding..
*
For my syrians, I feed half a tea spoon per only. Maybe you can try the same amount.

I also use the rolled oats for mealies. I still got 3/4 of the rolled oats left.

Any1 here happen2 have some rare color syrian like solid black or calico?
*
Last time used to have a black banded. Found him in small petshop in Cheras. Nowadays rarely go petshop hunting with sangels. We found a lot of rare colors but didn't get any.

I think the last time I saw a solid black at Pet's Family in Taman Megah. There got a lots of syrians. Sometimes got a few rare colors in the tank.

Don't think you can find calico in Malaysia. Maybe in Singapore as the breed there is more pure than here. Plus there got a lot more rare colors.

erm...actually you can find many cream banded and creams in The Pet Family, Klang( Bukit Tinggi) and i've seen few albino ones too(quite sometime back)...yeah..they're becoming rare now
and the best part is there are no good certified breeders in our country, unlike in the UK and US where you can find breeders easily...but there are good hamster keepers that breed hamsters which  are healthy...at least we have them tongue.gif
btw, what's a calico...you mean tortoiseshell? are they both the same?
ok, the next question goes to all syrian hamster owners : what type of coat patterns have you kept ?
i've had LH cream banded( Sharkie)  and currently a SH sable(smoe a.k.a smokey) tongue.gif
*
Calico is tri-color. Looks like those GP with white, brown and black coat.

Current - LH Mink banded TimTim, solid Umbrous Kiko, LH Cinnamon banded JackJack, Sable banded Pillow (Nezu's fatsoso), Umbros banded Puffie (Nezu's fatsoso)(she's my avatar. now bigger).

Past - solid Sable AshAsh (ran away), solid Umbrous DigDig (wet-tail), LH solid Cream SamSam (unknown death), SH Black banded Fumoffu (put to sleep suffered bad eye infection), solid Cream Shasha (ran away).

too small eh??  coz i`ve read in which site i dun remember saying that ovo wheel is suit for all hammy...ermM~~  btw thankz!!
*
The wheel that comes with the Ovo is too small for syrians. Syrians requires at least 8 inch wheel.

You can still use the current wheel if your syrian is still small. But replace it with a bigger wheel as it the small wheel will cause their backs to have problems due to long term use.

Because the rust taste salty and the hammy likes the taste. Better change to a tank as the rust will poison the hammy.

And no it's not a good idea to keep the male and the female together as the male will try to mate again.

Vet in UPM. Receptionist not so friendly, vet is friendly.
I have 4 hammies, 2 boys, 2 females. All in 4 cages. Cause one male is fighting with the other for territory and food. Females have to separate as mentioned earlier one is sick.  rclxub.gif

The bedding is really pricey!  shakehead.gif Though I know they are very good and organic (I'm a  fan of organic stuff). If I'm to use for the 4 cages, I might have to eat grass soon!  sweat.gif

Where can I buy the Uncle Taro Smoothie?

Added on May 14, 2009, 11:42 amBTW, is it cheaper to go to Petshack's store to buy or buying online is the same?
*
I got 5 2feet tanks and a zoozone2. All using Breeder Celect as bedding laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

You can get the smoothie from PetShack along with the others Eric138 mentioned.

I will always get everything in 1 go at their shop. Got some discounts when I buy a lot sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif

You can PM JTL and babydugong for more info.

blurjoey,

regal rats good ma? ur hammie like it?
*
They are not use to it yet. Can see some nibble marks on it. Think will take some time for them to get use it.

Anyway they have a lot to choose. Prestige Hamster, rolled oats, dog kibbles, smoothie and regal rat.

Don't have time to gut mealworms to feed them anymore.

My hamster/hamster cage stinks although I bath them once a week n change their bedding frequently.
Any ideas bout the smell???
My hammies r Robos...
N which type of bedding is the best?? Bedding finishing soon... sad.gif
*
Rule no. 1 - Never ever bathe your hamster! It's dangerous to their lives. Only bathe your hamster as your last resort.

You should wash the cage and the accessories as robos tends to pee everywhere (from past experiences with robos). If it still smells after washing, trying soaking it in hot water with white vinegar before washing. For those tough pee stains, you can soak that area with white vinegar for about 20-30 minutes before washing.

You can sand bath them. Use a deep bowl with sand bath deep until it touches the hamsters' tummy. Leave it in the cage for 30 minutes or as the toilet. Or if you got those small tank, you can put the sand bath and the robos inside for about 15 minutes.

They will go in and dig and roll around. Also they will also use the sand bath as the toilet. You can use those hamster sand bath or chinchillas sand bath (not sand dust).

There are so many bedding that you can use as long as it is not pine or cedar - Breeder Celect, Back 2 Nature, Aspen, & corncob.

That's the new ZooZone2 by Habitrail (also from Hagen) but the quality seems not as good as the original and it's more expensive.
