In pine, the main irritant is abietic acid, sometimes called sylvic acid. Hamsters exposed to cedar and pine wood over long periods of time have shown a clear link with chronic chest disease1. There is also a possible link with cancer and liver damage but the results of various studies are unclear and conflicting Pls read http://www.britishhamsterassociation.org.u...rnal/cedar.html

Human does. "Studies in humans exposed to cedar and pine wood over long periods of time have shown a clear link with chronic chest disease1" And the study hasn't concluded that whether pine is DANGEROUS against hamster nor human. It's the cedar that is dangerous.

* There is no reason to believe that the effects in rodents are any less significant and indeed they may be more significant given that rodents have a high metabolic rate and short lifespan.
It stated the claims of unsafe bedding for pine is less compiling compared to cedar, yes is true, but there is possibility too~
For me, i prefer to play safe and nt to take the risk even there is only 0.1%, since there are other safer bedding such as breeder celect or eco straw....

Most of the wood shavings available in Malaysia are Pine. The only Pine shavings that is safe for hamsters is Kaytee. Chipsi Super and Chipsi Classic is ok coz made of spruse and fir trees, not as bad as pine and cedar. Chipsi Extra is better coz made of beech wood.

chipsi beddings are fine because it is made up of european pine which contain lower levels of phenols... but to be on the safe side, just avoid anything with pine...use paper-based bedding likeBack-to-nature/breeders celect,Healthy pet or carefresh.... IT is so so so hard to fine good beddings in Malaysia!!! hope there'll be more varieties soon!

I jus change the bedding to Oxbow Eco Straw 2days back for my hammie... will see whether it's good or not... Becoz it's known as the absorbant power is higher than Breeder Celect..And its 100% safe for animals..
Wil come back to everyone after a week..
