In pine, the main irritant is abietic acid, sometimes called sylvic acid. Hamsters exposed to cedar and pine wood over long periods of time have shown a clear link with chronic chest disease1. There is also a possible link with cancer and liver damage but the results of various studies are unclear and conflicting

Pls read

* There is no reason to believe that the effects in rodents are any less significant and indeed they may be more significant given that rodents have a high metabolic rate and short lifespan.

It stated the claims of unsafe bedding for pine is less compiling compared to cedar, yes is true, but there is possibility too~

For me, i prefer to play safe and nt to take the risk even there is only 0.1%, since there are other safer bedding such as breeder celect or eco straw....

Most of the wood shavings available in Malaysia are Pine. The only Pine shavings that is safe for hamsters is Kaytee. Chipsi Super and Chipsi Classic is ok coz made of spruse and fir trees, not as bad as pine and cedar. Chipsi Extra is better coz made of beech wood.

I jus change the bedding to Oxbow Eco Straw 2days back for my hammie... will see whether it's good or not... Becoz it's known as the absorbant power is higher than Breeder Celect..And its 100% safe for animals..

Wil come back to everyone after a week..

Hi peeps!

May I know where can I buy Organic food and bedding for hamsters? Is anyone using these products? Is the price sky high?
I have 4 Roborovski hamsters and one is critically ill because of a big lump that keeps growing.  sad.gif
*
realized a lot people saying their hammies grow big lumps nowadays.... aiks... better send it to vet to check up...

Could it becoz of the bedding is not change often???

Organic food...So far i only know there is a organic treats which is Oxbow Organic Barley Biscuit....

But food i don think so... You can try the Oxbow Healthy Handfulls or Oxbow Regal Rat... I am feeding healthy handfulls, kinda good, Hermes getting fatter and shinier the fur...waakakaka...

Blurjoey feeding Regal Rat, u can ask him for feedback..

Organic Bedding... I jus put the Eco Straw Bedding 3days ago..so waiting to see whether it's good or not... But it's made of 100% wheat straw, so it's safe to be consume.. Blurjoey's hammie eat the bedding... biggrin.gif

Btw..what bedding are u using?

thanks for the info.  happy.gif
I think its tumor. Brought it to do vet but vet said too big, cant do anything. Just give her multi-vitamin to keep it a little stronger. sigh...it is heart-wrenching to see it suffer though it seems to be able to walk, eat and scratch stuff.

I think its because earlier/last year, I put her quite near to TV when I was renting a small house. It was one of the question by the doc. It could be one of the many reasons tho.

Before her, there was one winter white (owned by friend given to me), who was also sick. It also had growth. It could be the food.

But now I learned that certain bedding is also bad!  shocking.gif Sigh, all those unscrupulous manufactures/sellers.

Doing all I can to give them a comfortable n better life~

Which vet you brought it to? Sad to hear that...aiks...

Ya, some bedding is not really good.. Esp those with a lot dust...not good for animal and not good for human too..

Diet is very important actually, the diet you feeding reflects on their health directly. Quite a number of us feeding our hammie Uncle Taro Smoothie, and the feedback is good. U can get it a try~
