4 gears and 5 gears...
With 1 more extra gears, you can have a better gear ratio, thus can get higher speed with lower RPM, the lower the RPM the better fuel efficiency.
Like Avanza gear ratio, with only 4 speed auto, when they cruise at 100km/h, their RPM hit high at 3200. Like City CVT which have infinite gear ratio, at 100km/h, it is only 2300RPM. Normally the average should be at around 2600-2800.
My old City VTEC, the fuel consumption average 420km @ 32-34 litre... City full tank is 42 litre, when you have 10 litre left, the indicator will turn on. So if full tank, you can hit 460 km at least.
So new city FC, i-VTEC better than VTEC in FC, but new city with torque converter and 5 speed auto, while old city CVT and no torque converter, more or less will end up same. Don't forget heavier city vs old lighter city as well as 16' vs 15'.
And to invisible guy, I am from Wilayah.
That's actually on the lower average side of things. When I had my Vios, I could hit 470km at the very minimal and there would still be about 8L of fuel left in the tank. Getting 500 ~ 530km wasn't even difficult. Bear in mind, it's a 4 speed AT and the RPM meter does not hit 3200 at 100km/r, it's usually about 2800 ~ 3000 RPM unless you're a heavy footer. Both Vios and City have a 42L gas tank, so FC is considered impressive. The City idsl version could hit 570km without breaking sweat, I suspect it could definitely go 600+ with careful driving.
In theory and in practice, 1 extra gear usually should perform better. In reality though, a lot of it has to do with driver behavior and how the engine is tuned for. If you're a heavy footer, I could give you a Prius and you would still get really lousy mileage on the car.
