It may not be warranted but I'll give you a piece of advice.

Before that, let me correct you that for the iPhones with the latest bootrom, once you reboot, you would have to jailbreak again and that is called tethered jailreak. It won't be locked. If you do not want this problem, get a relatively new used unit, not with the latest bootrom from GS here. There are many going around. In that manner, you can also opt to buy the new iPhone due in the middle of the year without having to waste a really huge sum of money. If you choose not to change to the new model, at least you do not have the headaches that genocide stated and all those in the know concur.
*
oic.. all 3Gs model come with this latest bootroom which we must jailbreak again once we reboot... hmm.. so far there is no perfect JB yet?

anyway, tks a lot for your valuable advise.

Not if you buy from Maxis. It could well be that overseas telcos may provide the cloth.

All iPhones sold by appointed telcos are original. It is only phones from certain countries which you need to unlock as they are locked to their service providers.

Not all iPhones sold in the States are unlocked. Only certain telcos have decided to sell the unlocked version.

U guys sure o not you can purchase iPhone from T-Mobile? As I know, AT&T still have exclusive rights to iPhone until June/July this year. Even going thru their websites didn't show you can purchase the iPhone what more to say an unlocked ones.

Maybe you are confused between the google nexus one which is unlocked with an iPhone.

If i'm wrong, please furnish us with the source. Not just by saying "I hear from this and that". If this is true than websites like macrumors, appleinsider and tipb would publish such news.

Trust this would allay your skepticism, frozz, extracted from a website which in fact was raised here before.

Unlocked Apple iPhone Available From Buy.com in the U.S.
Written on April 13, 2009 by Darrell Etherington and 6 people have commented
If you’re still skittish about being locked in for a lengthy contract and don’t mind the fact that new hardware will almost undoubtedly be hitting the streets in only a couple of short months, and if you have money lying around not doing anything useful, Buy.com has a deal for you, for the low price of $799. That’s the price you’ll pay for a brand-new, in-box, unlocked Apple iPhone from Buy.com. In fact, it’s better than unlocked, it’s never been locked in the first place, so you won’t have to worry about sketchy jailbreaking/unofficial unlocking procedures if you’re not tech-savvy.

The never-locked 16GB iPhone 3G comes with a full Apple warranty, which is probably not the case with most unlocked units you’ll find on eBay, but Buy.com does warn that you might not be able to understand your product’s instruction manual, since the devices come from all over the world, and not necessarily English-speaking countries. That means this is probably a case of an overstock buy-out from a variety of global carriers in preparation for the June WWDC ‘09 iPhone hardware refresh.

Apparently you can easily swap out SIM cards using these models, so if you’re a globetrotter, this might just answer your prayers. And maybe Om Malik, over at our sister site GigaOM, can finally come back to the iPhone fold using a more dependable network than AT&T’s. T-Mobile, or any of the 30 different smaller GSM carriers in the U.S., will work with these phones out of the box, according to Buy.com’s product information site. Plus, unlike with unofficially unlocked phones, you can connect to iTunes and update without worrying about being locked out and having to jailbreak again.

I’ve been wanting a second device so that I can devote one to testing, and it’d be nice to have something I can travel with and use pay-as-you-go SIMs with so as not to get charged massive roaming fees, but my heart flutters every time I think about that $799 price tag. Plus, I’m already going to be sufficiently gouged when the new iPhone hardware comes out in June and I have to try to talk my carrier into allowing me an upgrade when I still have two years left on my contract.

Buy.com may just be trying to move more units, but they are claiming that they have very few units left in stock. Anyone planning on picking one of these up? If so, what for? Is the $799 price justified, considering the freedom you get by avoiding a contract/AT&T’s spotty network?

Errr ... this is from Buy.com and not from T-Mobile or other telco. They got the phone from all over the world from the said article and it's only for 16GB iPhone 3G (not 3Gs). USD$799 for a 16GB iPhone 3G? Izzit worth it?

Knew you will say this. Yeah, apologies for the misinformed availability by the telco thingy.

The fact still remains that unlocked units are available in the States now as opposed to previously when you can't even smell one. Cheers.

It just flashed by in my mind and I am not too sure about this but I remember reading somewhere that AT&T is no longer the sole 'distributor' for iPhones in the States. Perhaps someone can either refute or rebut this.

Hey. I'm new here and I'm not sure whether it's the right place to ask but, is the iPhone 3Gs worth buying than the 3G version?

I'm currently eye-ing on getting an iPhone, trying to find a shop to buy it. Around KL and PJ. Not going to get it from Maxis due to family disagreeing about it. sleep.gif

But I'm still insist of getting an iPhone. biggrin.gif

Just trying to find a shop to buy it and it must be cheaper than Maxis. And it must be unlocked too? I don't know anything about all these but I just want to get the phone and use it coz I'm a strong social-networking person plus, it's better to get an iPhone than an iPod touch coz it's like 2 in 1 kinda thingy if you get me. biggrin.gif

Anyone can help me with this? Thanks. smile.gif
