QUOTE(kenn91 @ Nov 12 2008, 07:00 PM) indian star i suppose? they're naturally not one of those 'active' tortoises, so don't expect them to run around too much. as long as they are mobile during certain parts of their photoperiod is ok.they certainly don't enjoy basking for too long either (a few minutes only then head straight into hiding. and don't force them into basking for too long, you might not like the consequences). try feeding them every other day as opposed to every day, that should help increase their appetite. Redfoot tortoise would be a good choice too. If you want active "tortoise" get the asian giant pond turtle H.Grandis and you might get shocked to see how active they are

What happens when u overdid the basking/sunbathing for them like say 1 hour under the sun with water? I know consequences is not good, but if possible, kindly expand on that a bit?they certainly don't enjoy basking for too long either (a few minutes only then head straight into hiding. and don't force them into basking for too long, you might not like the consequences). try feeding them every other day as opposed to every day, that should help increase their appetite. Will they die of heatstroke? Or become sick thereafter? Become hyperactive for few minutes out of the sun then sleep whole day or become very lethargic? Thanks! |

yes they can die out of heatstroke if you put them out in the sun for too long without any shade/hide. water for drinking/soaking won't help much because the shell is a damn good heat conductor.
depending on the severity of the damage (whether the tortoise had minor dehydration, foaming or had thoroughly been cooked up inside) the tortoise can die on the spot, live a few days in agony or just might survive. my advice, don't take chances! QUOTE Become hyperactive for few minutes out of the sun then sleep whole day or become very lethargic? they (IST) usually come out during dim light photoperiod (morning/late afternoon/early evening) when the heat is not so intense. most of the time the remain in hiding, whether sleeping or lazing off. most petshops don't provide hide, and assume restless tortoises (in search of hide) as active tortoises. try hardware shop/supplier or fishery-related stockist for fiber tank. last time someone on agribazaar was even selling 5' X 10' for about rm500+ only.
nurseries usually sell them at f*cking high prices. |

Question: For like for ELMO's case, would the size of the tank affect the growth of his snapper? Coz some fishes tend to grow faster/bigger when they are reared in larger tanks. Was juz wondering if that applies to TTT also?
And also i think that elmo, you'd wanna get the maximum size u can now so that you don't have to keep changing when ur snapper gets bigger that'd save u alot of money n time to chg..my opinion.. |

Hi. I have two red eared sliders, one is significantly larger than the other, but still within several inches only.. I noticed for a few days that the smaller one's been making funny noises, something like sneezing. Then he started to swim lopsided. I checked online and he most probable has an upper respiratory infection or pneumonia. Now apparently this is only treatable by vets. Do any of you know any turtle/terrapin vets in the ampang area? It'll be really helpful =). thanks!

First of all,to even let u know where the vets are..you'll have to tell us where you're from..lol..anywayz,theres a pin up board of all available vets at the main page..pls look it up..
Thx uzairi for the info..meaning if a specimen is housed outdoors, they'd most likely grow at the same rate in the wild.. |
