since u've been to TGI, Chilis, tony roma... which do u think is the best among these three?
*
Personally I think TGI > Chilis > Tony Romas in terms of steak. I've tried the steak at Tony Romas once or twice, so-so only, and I prefer to order their speciality, ribs. But it also depends on which shop u go to, I went to TGI sunway, which didnt make steak as good as the one in subang parade. I went to Chilis KLCC i found that thier steak is better than the one in Midvalley, I don't know, maybe it's just me or the athmosphere there at that time.

Anyone tried to cook their own steak? I tried a few times, but everytime they tasted bland cause I didn't use any sauce, just served it with the sauce that came out of the beef, I thought thats the best way to cook a steak. Yes I watched that Gordon Ramsay video, and copied exactly what he did, but still something was lacking. I guess thats why he's a chef and I'm not biggrin.gif

So in conclusion I gotta try these shops:

Jake's Charbroil steak in Starhill Gallery
Prime at Le Meridien hotel KL central
Gaucho
Angus
TheShip in Damansara/Bukit Bintang
Jake's Place
Maredo's Steakhouse near Bangsar Village/KLCC/Hartamas

Does anyone know the location of Gaucho, Angus and Jake's Place?

Thanks!

The thing i like about maredo is their chimichurri condiments which you can add to your steak... it's made with sun dried tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and vineger.. Really brings out the taste of the meat.

Jake's at Medan Damansara is selling their wagyu by pound. A good piece will cost you RM300+ but once you tasted it you will feel heaven on earth. This restaurant is located next to VS. It had a weird and cheapo look inside but their food is excellent.

You guys might want to try DIY your own wagyu. This supermarket in Jalan Ampang called Hock Chun is selling fresh and nice imported wagyu. You will be able to do your own wagyu meal for half the price of the restaurant.

For me i prefer rib eye steak, because i think its the best cut in term of flavor and tenderness. Perfect balance.

I've had tenderloin, they are tender but i always feel that they lack flavor. It take a great chef to bring out the full potential of a tenderloin steak. Sirloin/striploin/NY have great flavor but its a bit lean.

For my review i'm just gonna focus on rib eye bcoz this is the cut that i think you dont need a lot of money to enjoy. Its tender, juicy, and the flavor mwaaaaah!!!! drool.gif

For place i would say i prefer

Tony Romas, TGIF, The Ship, San Fran, Chillies in that order from best to worst

All of the rib eye steak cost around RM 50, pretty much standard price for a juicy rib eye and I always order it medium rare.

From experience, Tony Romas haven't dissapoint me yet but for some reason think Sunway Pyramid Tony Romas is the best compared to The Curve and Mid Val. Very good, friendly service. If your steak arrive not in your prefered doneness they will make you a new one. The steak is 10 oz, big and thick. There's no gravy, so might not be to your liking if you're a gravy freak. But for me, i prefer the pure taste of the rib eye instead of gravy or any other sauce. Every rib eye i had from Tony arrive perfectly, medium rare. Brown n charred outside, pinkish to redish inside and not bleeding. just nice. The extra fatty bits from the steak seems to melts in my mouth adding more flavor to the cuts of meat. thumbup.gif wub.gif

TGIF - The curve, i had JD steak, 10 oz, Big Juicy and tender. but the sauce taste a bit like taucu + teriyaki and too sweet. I dont like the sauce. But I do like the steak. So when i had it i pretty much toss the sauce away and just enjoy the jack daniel marinated steak as is. The steak was smokey, oakey, and a bit sweet. My main complain, i can't choose my side dish. The grill zuchini's was not that great. But the steak was nice. biggrin.gif

The Ship, for a rib eye steak with a price range of around 40 - 50. i expect it to be at least 10 oz. But the ship's rib eye steak is thin, dissapoiting in term of size. But it is tasty. It comes with no gravy. But the taste of the meat is good. As with Tony n TGIF the chef did a great job cooking my steak medium rare. nothing worse than an over cooked or under cooked steak right? But for the price The Ship is stingy hmm.gif , the steak is thin, baked potato is puny, the stim veg is like 3 piece of brocolli, and a knob of corn.

San Fran - mid val, my rib eye steak comes at the right doneness. the taste is well... good but i had better (see above), sumhow the fatty bits just doesnt melts in my mouth like tony or tgif or the ship. it feels more like eating a piece of cartilage or sumthing, rubbery. doesn't help with the flavor department at all. so might wanna seperate those extra fatty bits if you wanna enjoy the steak. Also everytime i eat there the steak gets cold quite fast. kinda ruin the experience since i had to finish it quickly. The steak here comes with minimal salt n pepper so that u can add it to your own preference. so if u feel the steak need a bit of salt n pepper please feel free to add to taste. also for the price it is not as big as tony's or TGIF's JD. San Fran is also a stingy place. i dont feel like i had enough bang for my bucks.

Chillies - Mid Val, this is the worst rib eye steak for me vmad.gif , but my gf seems to love it. but the one she had was at OU. the one i had was in mid val. 2 times i order medium rare and both time the steak arrive under cooked and bleeding. A perfect case of what happen if you take out a cold piece of meat out of the fridge and straight to the hot grill. The outside was brown but the center was not properly cook n cold. Its chewy like eating a piece of bubble gum. Yucks. The both time i had it, it was terrible. Even the customer service was crappy. I told the waiter that the steak was not cooked properly but he keeps saying that i order medium rare n the one i had was medium rare and suppose to be bleeding (WTF?). I'm not going to chillies mid val anymore. But maybe i'll try the one in OU since my girl said the medium rare that she had there was good. so maybe i'll give it a shot before i decide to give up on chillies completely

I'm still looking for other outlets to pursue my craving for rib eye steak. How i rate my steak might not be to your liking. But this is how i prefer my steaks. I dont eat my steaks with gravy or sauce so it might also not be to your liking. I feel that a great steak should showcase the taste of the meat and not be overpowered by mediocre black pepper sauce, mushroom gravy or whatever. Also i haven't tried any of the wagyu or kobe beef. coz its way too expensive lah, I wanna be able to enjoy a good steak once in two weeks not once a year. tongue.gif

Tony Roma is horrible. But then again, I may have over the top expectations after having USDA Prime steak in UK. Why did I think Tony Roma is horrible? Well, I always have my Rib-Eye medium-rare. The medium-rare rib-eye at TR is, well, purple not pink. It was also very rubbery and difficult to chew.

VERY MUCH UNLIKE A USDA PRIME.

Then again, you can't expect that kind of melt in your mouth quality of a USDA prime for less than RM 100.

Anywhere I can get USDA Prime? Angus beef is nothing compared to USDA Prime because it's grass fed. Corn fed is what you want, because it increases marbling and flavour. Grass fed cows are leaner and less flavoursome.

I have to try this Maredo Steakhouse. It has to be good because it's Argentinian right? LOL.

do you guys know where to find a good piece of steak? as in raw.. Been trying to look for good cuts of meat at Jaya Jusco, Tesco, Coldstorage and all they have are those thinly sliced piece of meat which they call steak..

Talked to the butcher there and they say i have to buy the whole big piece (around 1kg) for them to cut it into the thickness i want (jaya jusco) which is quite ridiculous..

The thickness i'm looking for is around 4-5cm.... Anything less is just a waste of time...

raist86, I feel your pain. I was looking for a big chunk of rib-eye to work on as well. The big supermarkets do not sell it (Jusco, Tesco, Coldstorage) and it's quite disappointing.

You would have to find a specialist butcher. It would be quite difficult to find in Malaysia, though. When you do, please drop me a PM so I can buy steaks too!
