well, you can just get the 6th string replaced. most of the guitar shops around stock em. u just gotta find out wat gauge your old string was. don't need to change the whole set.

btw, how did you snap a string while downtuning? 1st time i heard of such thing

Added on October 1, 2008, 12:02 amAnd does yamaha just do the one string with the same type of string?

well then it should be the standard gauge. so just go to the shop and tell the fellar or show him ur guitar, the old man in guitar collection TTDI can help u out smile.gif
i tink its less than RM5, as the low E is RM5 for D'adario strings

Do you think its possible for me to go back to yamaha to change just the one string using the same factory issued string? Will it sound different or wierd if the one string is a different brand or anything from the other 5? How much do you think they would charge there?

Sorry for so many questions... new to this. And thanks for the advice.

i'm not sure myself wei. but well, u can go back to yamaha, and the fellar will just help u out. but impossible for u to get the same string la, unless u wanna change a whole set to get all brand new. it'll be fine with just one string changed, as long as the others are still new

It is recommended to change the factory installed set of strings once you get your guitar... you won't know how long the guitar has been on the shelf and how many people has played with it before.. FYI, wound acoustic bronze strings have very short lifespan... they lose their brightness in about a month

Hmmm... mine came from the storeroom. I'm inexperienced with acoustic guitar so to me it still sounds good. However if you have suggestions on which strings would improve it and if its necessary i'll appreciate if you share it with me. Like which brand and which gauge... they give me a headache...

You can give GHS Bright Bronze a try... They are bright enough to last you a couple of months on tone... As for the string gauges, don't differ from the factory ones by a lot, as this will cause intonation problems... You can just ask for regular gauge at the shop... smile.gif

Yeah, i agree that if you bought it without changing the strings, chances are that the strings are pretty old and rusted. I usually swap out new strings the day I buy my guitar. 13-56 or 12-53 are a good gauge to start for a beginner. D'addarios or Dunlops should cost you around Rm20-25 a pack.

You can find tons of vids on youtube on how to change the strings. It's really easy actually. Also, since you're a beginner, it would be wise to invest in a good tuner and a Peg Winder, which would save your already aching hands from more blisters.

Thinnest string are suppose to be the 1st E ... not 6!! O.O!!
And it Broke when u tune DOWN?? u sure..=.=... may be u turned too fast, next time turn it slower, bit by bit till u get the sound

since ur guitar new, u should just change the 1st string, unless they had kept the guitar long b4 it sold, mine guitar f210 comes with first set original strings NEVER broke, no matter how i tune it (but somewhat careful)

Added on October 1, 2008, 1:47 amu can get single strings sold out at most of the place.. they even exist in some bookshop(ok, may b there arent good enough), but this depends on wat quality of strings u wanna achieve . just a single string shouldnt cost much. But for safety, change all strings, but make sure you wont broke the E high string again...

Well, if you tune it down, it just shows how old and rusty the strings really are.
better change to a good set in case the rest snaps in the middle of performing.

I was going slow.... And yeah it was tuning down.. i mean if the sound gets deeper it tuning down right? And it was the thickest string so the low E not the high E... Sigh.. I was so shocked. Now I'm contemplating whether to change the whole set to a better one or just the 6th string.

Well, they are actually quite shinny... this particular model always out of stock so I assume they take it from the factory and not rotate round the shops...

Oooo good point. Just got a ten minute lecture about new guitar + broken string from parents... sigh.. at 1am sommore!
Where do you think I should get these new strings and where should I go to restring it in terms of price and workmanship (the person at the shop actually bumped my guitar while tuning it to the piano when I bought it) ... i mean I just broke a 6th string.. I'm not going to restring on my own!

My suggestion is to go for a phosphorbronze coated strings- D'Addario is fine but i personally like Martin strings but they dont have phosphor bronze but the tone is very nice The problem is you need to change it quite often. Look to change once every 3 months but if you are a performer than they change every performance!!. None of the above mentioned this but personally I use the services of a Luthier. Personally a good luthier will improve the sound of the guitar and you will be surprised with the difference of sound above being done by them. You also need to know about truss rods and if you know how to adjust them will help you in maintenance of your guitar

Added on October 3, 2008, 3:34 amForgot to add this- Dont bother to change one single string as you do not know how long the strings have been on the guitar. You only do it when you break one string while others are new. Change the whole set and once broken change gauge and company but dont buy the hightest gauge and most expensive but let common sense dictate and your ears. Choose a sensible priced ones based on the type , cost of the guitar and most of all have a lovely time playing late at night

Most of the time, if one guitar string breaks on my guitars, I usually change the whole set. My strings lasts me between 4 to 6 months if I don't play very often, and 3-5 months on my more heavily played guitars. Usually by that period, one string snaps and then voosssh..... complete string change.

Oooo. I actually got my guitar restringed today but unfortunately I just read your post. I did get the D'Addario but its just bronze... no phosphor. I think that this one is kinda deep for my liking.... Ooh and yeah I decided to change all the strings so oh well. Maybe I'll try the phosphor bronze next XD once every three months? Wow, thats frequent. Hmm, all the more reason for me to get the phosphor bronze soon! tongue.gif How does gauge work? And is luthier a string brand? Thanks for feedback tongue.gif

P.S I've finally gotten my entire string set changed to the D'Addario Bronze gauge 0.01? Err not sure but the figure is something point something and there is a 1 inside. AND I've learned how to restring!! Hurrah!

Thanks for all your feedback guys! I really really appreciate it. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif notworthy.gif And I promise never ever to break my string before a public holiday (where all shops are closed! And not that it will trouble me anymore now i know how to restring blush.gif )

you dont call it nicer.
you call it different.
the tone would be different.
thicker gauge give u fatter sound usually.

for me it's a matter of preference.

strumming as in the body of the sound a little thin?
maybe .10 is a little light for you.

brands of course do play a part in it, but not always.

what brand are u using btw?

Err, I think thin would be right. Should I go for the .12 or .13 next? i plan to change in like a few months time... I'm really more into strumming than picking (mostly because my picking is terrible blush.gif )

I'm using the D'addario 20/80 bronze. But maybe I'll try phosphor next round.

Always use light picks for picking and strumming on the acoustic... they sound the best as you get the scratch and attack from the lighter picks... never use heavy picks

So, you're more to finger picking stuff ?

Could be just me, but for picking stuff, i'll always go for 'rounder' or 'fatter' sound.

Err, I think thin would be right. Should I go for the .12 or .13 next? i plan to change in like a few months time... I'm really more into strumming than picking (mostly because my picking is terrible  blush.gif )
I'm using the D'addario 20/80 bronze. But maybe I'll try phosphor next round.

well i guess it really boils down to preference and of course the sound from your very own guitar.
u have to experiment around a few times to get the perfect gauge to suit u n your guitar.
but since u prefer strumming, (michelle branch?) i think u would prefer abit heavier gauges.

Not really into finger picking but some songs do have picking in between the strumming, so I found it really irritating picking with a pick (ironically XD)

It is better to change the whole set instead. You do not want each string sound obviously different.

Wouldn't say one is better then the other....... Mostly personal preference really.

I went through LOTS of brands before I landed with Jim Dunlop for electrics and Elixirs for my Acoustic.

Elixirs are too expensive for me unfortunately. I've went to one shop and they recommended me martin for its tone, but said that it has a short life. I have a 20/80 D'addario on right now, but I don't like the sound.

I've yet to play a set of 80/20 bronze which sounds better than Phosphor Bronzes.

Martin Phosphor Bronzes should be pretty good. To extend it's life, just remember to wipe your strings every time after you play them. That way they won't lose their shine, so quickly that is.

Fast fret not so recommended for acoustic strings.
By day 3 you'll hear masking of the 2 steel strings. Well, it happened once when I used D'addarios so.... I never really used them again.
In fact my fast fret, has been missing for awhile, I just rememebered bout it lol

haha really ah? i duno wor. me using bass and they're really expensive (rm90-120).

so its really important to take care of them. i thought guitar players also used fast fret?

the only problem is, once there's rust and it kena the fast fret, means die alreadi. haha coz then u're spreading it to the next set of strings, and the next. sweat.gif

Maybe some kind soul can let us use their shop? Have a bunch of strings for sale too......

No lah, I meant for acoustic only. Cuz they tend to lose their brilliance fairly early.

I don't play bass, (but have tried!!!) but don't have enough experience to comment.
Fast fret for electrics are fine though.

Actually, I did go to youtube and found one very good tutorial. But all of em were already unstrung... and I was so daunted by the guitar pins... I mean, they looked really well screwed on. Only later i found out it was just pop in and outs... XD

if u hav guitar winder, the is a curve, half circle at the side of it.
u can slip it into the pin and pull it out.
make sure u do slowly, or it will spoil ur bridge n pin.

Err, now my pin comes out like just use fingers to pull, in fact not much strength needed aso. What do I do with a guitar winder apart from that?

hope i did misunderstand u.
apart from wat i mention,
a guitar winder is use to wind up string lo,

when u change a new set of string...
it jus more faster than u use finger...tat all.

actually it is quite useless...haha
but sometime, quite come in handy
especially for people like me lazy to turn the machine head.
but in the end, u hav 2 use ur finger 2 to tune up the string also.
damn doh.gif

thats why. kinda pointless actually.

more a marketing gimmick. unless u change for about 20guitars a day. then it will make a difference.

i have it sitting in my case.
