Of course there is nothing wrong with slangs, as long as you're in your own country!

have you even try giving a presentation in aus with your malaysian slangs? or have you try speaking in slangs with the aussies? if you've even tried avoiding saying them, then you have agreed that there is in fact SOMETHING wrong with the slangs.

slangs only work in your own country, between your own people. you think some aussie slangs are funny and you try not to follow them, it's exactly the same with ours.

by reducing the lahs and lohs we use everyday, it's not only better for the people you speak to in aus, but also for personal improvement.

well true true....coz ur a student and ur not in a position of power yet...so u have to learn others' ways....but say if ur a lecturer, the best in ur field, when the uni cant even afford to lose u....then u got the upper hand...now they have to bend ur way....and learn manglish for once.....

well i dunno why like ppl speaking manglish like kena look down like that......same goes to indian-english....sure get that "thank you come again" shit...but when those german ppl speak their english-slang (that sinking=thinking stuff) ppl just dont mind....a tad of racism?? hmm.gif hmm.gif

well well...in my case i cat wait till the day i can pwn everyone with manglish....like right now im forced to speak english like the tv english so to say....coz the locals cant understand me and i even got told of by my tutor to speak local english....my tutor goes...."oh i know its abit hard but u gotta learn to speak like the locals, its okay for me coz ive been to SEA so many times im accustomed to it but most ppl just cant understand u!"....then got shit marks from that tutor...

fcuk that man....i felt like im betrying my roots / trying to be sumone im not....when im with my msian / sg frens....i will automatically switch to manglish....much more casual...but there are awkward times though....like when im with a local and a msian/sgporean....if i speak manglish...ang moh cant understand...if i speak tv-english....then the msian/sgpore fren wuill think ui trying to hard like that.....like some ppl i know whu studied in Aus.....when go back to msia speak got slang slang...damn sien....spineless pricks!!! when lar they gonna get a self identity for once?
*
LOL Mang/Singlish... it's only fun when you speak like that to people who speak the same, i.e. fellow Malaysians and Sporeans. Try speaking that to angmoh and see their reactions. laugh.gif

I've become a chameleon now and I believe I'm not the only one... When speaking to fellow Malaysians the -lahs/-lehs and the rojaks all come out... but when speak with angmoh automatically will follow their accent. I don't claim to speak in an Aussie accent, but I don't think I sound Manglish either haha. It's all about habit I guess, cause I have no choice but to speak that way with the people I encounter in hospitals now and most of the other friends whom I speak Manglish/Chinese with are at other hospitals.

About the "racial" segregation, I guess that does occur inevitably. 物以类聚,人以群分mah... Just don't end up becoming katak bawah tempurung and know nothing about their culture can adi... Like if you're in Melbourne, at least learn some footy teams' names so that when people shout "GO CATS !!" you know wtf they are shouting about.

Thats Geelong with the bluish and white stripes. They won the AFL grand final in 2007 and runner-up in 2008.

Quite a lot of teams have animal nicknames, Hawks, Roos, Lions...etc

You should go for a footy match with an Australian friend and he will explain all the rules and teams.

And did I mention that there this Tuesday is a public holiday because of Melbourne Cup...which some horse racing thing. A lot of my friends are planning on going to Flemington even though its the middle of swot vac. >.<

ahhh i think there should be quite a demand....lotsa diabetics here......and still on the rise despite all the health promotion stuffs...and i think the aussies take their sport quite seriously too and since medical care is all covered....any sport related injuries will be channeled through....

but im not sure bout salaries though.....but working hours shouldnt be too bad....like the usual 8-5?? its under the "allied health" department....like the physio's, occupational therapist & etc......

you already a trained podiatrist or are you planning to get trained here?

i had trouble picking up 'mate' always say dude or bro. or boss.

never understood footy. all i saw was WWE on a big green field instead of in a ring. summore everyone's like lets go watch football.... man that was a shock. i forgot football is actually soccer, and football is aussie rules football (footy)

LOL Demons... I remember the only match which I watched on TV while switching in between the Olympics opening ceremony... Cats tapao demons kao kao... Meh, footy ain't my thing.... but at least it's better than rugby or even the boring cricket...

I don't think the Aussies are full of themselves or arrogant, but they are definitely people who are very proud of their culture and their country. No harm though, this kind of patriotism is actually worth learning - we need people to be more proud of our own M'sia, even though it's kinda shitty back home thanks to the non-stop political bickering.

tax is high. and cost of living is also quite high. plus stuff like petrol, servicing your car. is damn high.

i quite liked the environment there. but you might have trouble enjoying if you are "TOO" malaysian/singaporean. just because you ended up getting stressed cause there is no good food around hahahah. its hard to find good asian food. they all been australianized.

.....

summer is coming around soon. just wanted to ask. do any of you walk around without shoes or slippers in the summer??
i never understood this concept? aussies go barefoot in summer so we asked them why... the fella said... "because its sunny".... ROFL

?? disagree. pay is GENERALLY higher than Malaysia. Stressful? Depends what job you do.
Tax is high, as some has pointed out, but your take home pay is still generally higher than what you get in Malaysia.
Petrol is still very much cheaper than KL, around 1.35 recently. Can get as high as 1.70 depending again on oil prices obviously.
Cost of living is high, and again that depends which city you're living in. Generally, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane is more expensive to live in compared to Perth or Adelaide. And salaries also depend on which state you're working in. Canberra generally paid the highest in OZ because no one wants to work here
working environment is pretty good i said. but that is if you're comfortable working with ang mohs, and not Asians in general.

I will say it depends on wat you're looking for when you start working. here they abide by the 9-5 rules, only lately i've heard the aussies are working OT. even after tax, you still earn more than what you get in Malaysia, dollar to dollar but i heard increment is slow here, unlike Malaysia.

that means you might be doing better than your peers in Malaysia the 1st 3 years, but not so after that.

some things are cheaper here and some are expensive of course. petrol and car is cheaper than malaysia that's for sure. food is more exp but if you don't mind cooking, you can save on that. beer is cheap, so hanging out with frens is made easier.

but bear in mind that there's little night life here, only in the city where it's happening. even then, you can only go around and eat and drink, no shopping for you. it's a known fact that asia has the best night life in the world and I would say KL is one of the top.

to sum it all, if you love being young, having parties and love the night life, aus might not be the best place to be. but it's a great place to be if you're planning to build a family here smile.gif

yeah about the increments. i had a friend working for like 5 years. and his salary went from au$800 to au$1500. but now on his 7th/8th year finally they doubled his salary. i think they want you to quit. hahahah. but that might be just in his area. he worked in some government job. but that is some proof that they increment damn slow

Rugby and footy are kinda different. In Melb people are generally more crazy about footy, while in other places rugby is more popular I guess. But it remains that the Aussies are fanatical about their sport.

I guess in the city they can't be too arrogant and look down on foreigners since half of the city is swarmed by Chinese/Koreans/Japs/HK/SEAs/Indians biggrin.gif In hospitals it's even more apparent... cannot be too lansi since most of the doctors (esp junior ones) are non-Australians hehe.

9-5 and no OT? Probably applies to everyone except in the medical profession.

As for pay... you won't get as much as expected... Probably slightly more than back in Msia, but less crappy working environment and hours... Car and petrol are comparatively cheaper, as with groceries; but stuff like utilities, rent, taxes, and entertainment cost more. You win some, you lose some... the world ain't perfect.

Night life wise... I don't drink or go clubbing so it doesn't really matter to me, but it's kinda pathetic when you have nowhere to go after dinner... not like in M'sia you can go hang around the shops or go yumcha at night.

yeah it was for weekly. around his 5th year. he took home around 1200 i think a week. minus his costs of living he had very little to spend on himself. but i guess depending on your lifestyle .

although everyone knows. govt. pay is crap no matter where you live. hahahah.

apparently some people in accounting get a starting of 50-60k a year. depends on luck i guess. but even if you are making less you still can drive a nice car. hahahah. unlike malaysia. you can have a damn high paying job you still cant buy a beemer or mercedes.
