yeah dont mess with aussie customs. they will bust your a$$. plus if your unlucky they'll bust you. then put your face on border patrol tv series. hahahahahahah. funny show. when you go aussie make sure to watch it hehe. so make sure you declare. if you declare and they say you cant bring it in. they will confiscate it. and thats that. if you dont declare. they will fine you and confiscate your stuff. they are very good at finding food. dvd though i dunno i brought in so many they never bother me also. just food i think.
*
haha.. i don't worry about dvd.. as i already used to the life without dvd..
just the food.. i can't live without those food.. cry.gif cry.gif

what i like malaysia the most is the food only.. tongue.gif

just curious.. after they confiscate it.. they eat it? or throw.. hmm.gif hmm.gif

nola...they confiscate n throw away.....there's quarantine bin along the corridors at the carousel....so if u accidentally brought sth illegal in....throw away into those bins and avoid fine...food detection is very good as they got sniffer doggies....very very cute beagles.... wub.gif  wub.gif

erm...u can always try ur luck....coz sometimes u get some very strict officers watever food stuff oso confiscate....but some they allow certain things...most oso i hear say only....coz i dun bring food in......

anyway yea u can get tau sa piah in the asian shops....they sell lotsa things....but mostly processed / frozen food la...and yeaa those food wouldnt taste as good coz they as usually not as fresh....like those fried keropok n etc....sumtimes it tasted abit stale...like the bau tengik minyak sth like that....
*
eww.. and surely the price is much higher than here.. =.=

but.. their currency drop now.. rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif everybody can start buying a lot and keep..

well i dont think most ppl are like that...in fact even if u want to u cant.....coz most msians are in the cities....so u wont get the real aussie feel at all...its more asian than aussie....unless u go to some smaller town like bendigo, mildura, gippsland or sth....then only u get the real taste of aussie....

well maybe coz one's new here so gotta have some comfort food n etc....dont prejudge ppl just like that....not everyone can take the plunge and adapt like u do....

i am one strong believer of being true to oneself.....ie speaking manglish, not saying 'no worries', 'arvo', 'mate'.....i go by no problem, afternoon, dude/man.....i do accept and learn their ways but definitely not embracing theirs and discarding mine along the way....each to their own...thats just my take.... icon_rolleyes.gif  icon_rolleyes.gif

agreed!!

To: Grimm,
I just wanna some hometown memories..
In fact, i'll surely bring my "smelly" teddie over..
so what.. without the teddie i can't sleep well..
what's the point for me to migrate there and suffer, as in no appetite, can't sleep well..
i think most of us migrate there is because we feel that the overall environment there is better than here..
and now we have to choice to bring over these stuff, to let ourselves feel more comfortable and happier.. so just bring it..

being yourself is very important,
if you go there and just because you wanna join them and you lose your personality, what's the point moving there?
we go there to learn things, not to forget what we have now..

hi guys..

need some advice here.. tongue.gif
whether should i transfer on the 1st semester or 2nd semester..

this is the situation:
if i wanna transfer on the 1st semester.. i have 4 months holiday to complete all the transfer stuff such as visa, passport, air ticket, buy all sort of clothes *for cold weather* and much more..

but if i wanna transfer on the 2nd semester.. i have only 2 weeks holiday only, and should say even less than 2 weeks as 1 week before the course start, they have the orientation week.. therefore, i have only 1 week to complete all these stuff..

what should i do? transfer on the 1st semester or 2nd semester..
and also the other problem is $$ problem.. that's why i can't decide now..

Hi Lynn,

It's best to transfer into the semester that allows you to fit nicely into the standard plan of the course.

If you join half way and you have to take courses that are supposed to be taken by year 3 (assuming you're transferring into year 2), then you will have a hard time studying.

I myself had experienced ... well still experiencing the difficulty of transferring into third year semester 2 while I am supposed to complete second year semester 2 first before continuing.

I'm taking Engineering and right now in Year 3 semester 3. All the core subjects requires a thorough understanding of Control Systems which is covered in my Year 2 Semester 2 that I have yet to take.

Right now I'm going to the exam hall to face my judgment laugh.gif
*
actually i prefer to transfer next semester.. as the schedule not so tight.. i can take my own sweet time to arrange it and also don't have to scare of the ambassador department to close at what what time..

but also.. the $$.. everything is damn expensive now.. cry.gif
*later "money not enough 3" casting by me..*

QUOTE(KVReninem @ Nov 1 2008, 08:41 AM)
simplfied:
if you transfer on 1st smster; wats the cost?

if you transfer later; wats the cost too?

About holiday; its not a issue here, as you have to long summer holiday after you are done.

if financial issue is problem; its better you hold back from my point of view. From general Australian perspective; things are getting more pricey than expected.Import goods; daily groceries all goes up as the reverse of dollar gone bad. rclxub.gif
*
if i transfer 1 sem earlier, i have to pay around 100k.. but if i stay at sunway here.. i only have to pay around 30k..
that's huge amount.. and some more i have to consider of my brother as well.. he's studying in form 4 now.. going to form 5 next year.. and year after next.. COLLEGE.. which means... MONEY!!

If money pose a significant problem for you,i dont think it's a good idea for you to come to Aus to study then because even with the current low exchange rate,i dont think it will stay on this level for a long time.
*
well.. money is a problem for me in this case.. but i just don't want to spend too much of my parents money on myself.. that's why i'm rclxub.gif rclxub.gif now.. difference of 100k is a big problem as 100k might be useful for my brother around 2 years.. and that time i already graduate and i can work and i can support my family so that my parents' burden not so heavy.. BTW, one of the reason i wanna study in Aus is because the salary there is higher than m'sia.. and i have my uncle staying over there already.. so i'm surely will go there and study.. its just time matter..

QUOTE(jae @ Nov 1 2008, 06:06 PM)
Well transferring one semester earlier wouldn't make a difference of RM100k, assuming that you need RM120k (based on the old $1:RM3 rate), the difference in 1 semester wouldn't come to a figure of RM100k. Just wondering how long are you gonna be here in Australia?

And to what SeeD has just mentioned, somehow it's always better to start in the first semester, I have couple of friends who have to alter their subjects order due to some subjects only being offered in certain semester (either 1 or 2).
*
at least 1.5 years study over there.. if i'm lucky to get a job there.. then i'll be staying there forever, maybe..
but this 1.5 years.. i'll surely will work part time.. is just that.. the difference quite big between melbourne and sunway.. the currency.. the environment.. the money.. sad.gif

thanks guys.. but i think you misunderstood my meaning already..
yes.. indeed money is a problem for me, its also problem for all of you right?? its just that i am more concern of it as i have a younger brother.. and yes, my parents can support both of us, its just that i want to reduce their burden.. less 100k spending on myself, they can have a better life as in buy a new car or whatever.. and also i just wanna know roughly how you guys spend in AUSTRALIA..

anyway, i just wanna know, is it too rush if i wanna settle all in 1 week? all the visa blah blah blah.. if it is not RUSH, then i'll consider transfer in the 2nd semester..

BTW, working there is just my option.. as i said.. if i'm LUCKY enough, i can get a job there, and earn MAYBE higher income to support my family, and of course myself tongue.gif.. but if i can't get a job there, i'll just come back here.. as the demand for accounting field still quite high around the world..

QUOTE(StarGhazzer @ Nov 4 2008, 08:09 AM)
Both? biggrin.gif

But mainly to save money lah.

An average meal outside = 8.90-10.00, not counting places specially catering for students' needs which may be around 6 (but very few)... previously one meal is large enough to eat it twice, but now everything also shrink liao, one meal is only enough for eating it once.

So let's say 1 meal on average is AUD 9
2 meals per day = 18, add in misc stuff we'll say AUD 20

So one month would be 20x30= 600 sweat.gif

Even if you only eat 5 days per week, i.e. 20x20 = 400;
plus say you cook during the weekends which may cost 10-15 per weekend = say 15 x4 = 60
Total is still 460

If you cook daily, you'd probably spend approx 20-30 per week for groceries. We'll take 30 assuming that you eat heaps.
30x4 = 120 tongue.gif Add in miscellaneous stuff and I'm being generous here, the cost will still end up less than 200.

These are just for food... simple food of course, assuming that you don't eat exotic stuff.

Do the math. Want to cook or not? I would, and I am now. Somemore, there ain't many places that you can eat every day without feeling bloated or bored. It's not like back in Msia where you can eat zha fan and choose a different dish every day and still have lots of choices by the end of the week.

If anyone can't cook, it's time to learn now... biggrin.gif Cooking simple meals ain't that difficult... The TV just finished showing Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food, which shows how he tries to influence an entire town to cook their own meals instead of eating greasy chips every day. You just need to take the first step, and it'll come naturally. Easiest skill to learn? Try stir fry... a hot pan, hot oil, quick hand movements and you can cook almost anything... meat, vege, rice, mihun, mee... oh yeah. But don't try to "stir fry" fish unless you want to scrape the mess off your pan... I did it the first time doh.gif You can only deep fry fish, not stir fry.

For me, cooking is a fun thing to do....... it's the cleaning up that pisses me off haha.
*
haha.. same la.. cook is fun.. as you can cook it in a creative way.. maybe add A or B to make it tastier.. but maybe sometimes become.. weird? shakehead.gif

but luckily my housemate will help me wash.. i cook they wash..

i don't think aussie there is like that rite?? as all of us will be staying in single room..

QUOTE(bhypp @ Nov 4 2008, 09:21 AM)
hey KV...cook with gf means....they do all the cleanup!!! and all the preparations.....u just play play with the wok...and also when it comes to eating u can have 95% of their portion....they always on diet mar.... rclxub.gif

anyway panda-man.....i think that changi place is not that good la...pretty average only....but then again its not too expensive and its very nearby....

if dun feel like cooking can always buy those microwavable dinner from supermarket....just put into microwave n voila! dinner! from weightwatchers n etc summore.....so wont make u fat (so to speak la)

ahh my grovcries usually exceed A$30 per week leh! damn need to cut down on my junk food liao......zzZZ......yea eat out is never cheap....A$9 is just the quite average cafe's and stuff already like pretty basic stuff.....if u wanna go some proper dining restaurant....it would be like $15-30......haih.....thats why till today my best fren is still indomie.....sedap lagi jimat!

Added on November 4, 2008, 9:28 amso far the best msian food i had was from the ipoh garden restaurant at lygon street...quite a dodgy place.....like its stuck in the 80s like that....but pretty good food i must say......since its kinda hard to get true msian taste as most places nowadays serve more mainland style chinese food...sweat.gif

there is this msian place in clayton oso....forgot the name....somewhere near monash uni.....forgot its name...its hainanese chicken rice pretty authentic too
*
not really.. i cook.. my deardear oso cook.. but hor.. he eat a bit only.. sweat.gif
and we "scissors, paper, stone" to decide who gonna wash the dishes.. tongue.gif
