my cousin is in adelaide doing biotech. i heard he said the tax is very high, that when you work as fresh grad, you have to sacrifice quite alot for the tax.

maybe he was just joking, not really sure about this.  hmm.gif

the taxing system here is just pure craziness. you can be taxed as high as a tad below 50% (49.5% if memory serves) if you have an extremely high salary.

note that honours in oz is an extra year of study, NOT a measure of standard of achievement, as in the case of uk......ie, NOBODY gets an honours upon graduating from the basic course of study, no matter how well you do.......you then need to do an honours year, to get the honours attachment to you bachelor's degree.........
*
Honours is by invitation basis. You cannot do an Honours unless you have the marks for it and you only get awarded Honours if you achieve a Credit average and above (Distinction for a First Class). It IS a standard of achievement.

NO. If you do get (and the others have shown that it is near impossible as a student) a PR halfway through your course as a international student, you will loose your place as an international student, and will have to reapply, and even then I doubt you will be eligible for CSP. Full fees maybe.

For high level courses like Business, you should have little problem re-enrolling. But if you are doing something funky (say Bio-science) where the cut offs are vastly different between international and domestic students................................lets just say, if you had the money, you wouldn't be here.

Yes, tax is high. Again, it depends on how much you earn, but paying 40% to the taxman is not unheard off.

As least the money does go back into society in the form of parks, well stocked libraries, roads etc.

True. Not like malaysia to make ministers rich.

my point is that you cannot judge a graduate's achievement by whether he has an honours or not......true, it is an invitation, and based on good results at undergraduate level.......but undertaking a honour's year is voluntary, and most international students will not do it, as it is extra fees, so the absence of an honours does NOT mean one is no good, in contrast to the british system, where it means one's got a mere pass only.......

Haha, even worse if you have GST dockets. I have to make quarterly GST payments to the ATO and still do my tax by hand, keep all recipts for 5 years (will probably have a mountain load by then) and have my ABN written on everything above 75 bucks. Plus my hours have to be logged nicely on my BAS so the DIAC doesn't revoke my visa. Not to mention, i pay for medicare when i'm not entitled to it due to ATO considering me a resident laugh.gif.

There's also a 108 dollar surcharge if i pay late. Taxes, they'll get it out of you more efficiently than they deliver other services tongue.gif

You know. Malaysian tax is so much easier. Just don't fooking pay.

Driving Taxis is considered self employed. So for all means and purposes, i'm technically a business entity.

I wonder if the ABR will allow me to change my legal business name to "He who has huge balls" tongue.gif (so regret not trying when i registered sad.gif)

It should be fine, my relatives always bring over some (5 ~or more music/movie) CD/DVDs for me, and they were not asked anything by the customs. tongue.gif

Thats why you should employ an accountant!

I believe you would be entitled to a refund of your medicare levy paid as you are not entitled to it. Check when you submit your tax returns.

There is actually no law against bringing in pirated CDs for a non-commercial purpose.

Yeah, called the ATO about 2 hours back and they passed me to medicare to ask them for a levy exemption cert. Looking for a pharmacist to stamp the copy of my passport, as i'm not on good terms with the police (goddamnit, female coppers here talk as though they have something to prove to me, not to mention far more rude)

Only two things certain in life. Death, and taxes.

I'm licenced and attached to drive in the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Toowoomba (you have to sit for 3 fooking courses 100 bucks each cry.gif ), taxi and limo. Limo preferred as i get paid more.

No free lah, but i can do off meter discounted rate brows.gif

i just got a call from IDP saying that University of Melbourne offered me Bachelors of Commerce and University of Queensland offered me Bachelors of Engineering..

Anyone here from Uni of Melbourne? Can i take engineering course in Bachelors of Commerce because one lady told me that i can do so in the Australian Edu fair. Is it wise to do so?

Uni of Adelaide also offered me but they want to know my major. Haven't answer them yet tho. hmm.gif

b.com and b.eng are two completely different courses, and different faculties too.....you can of course change course after enrollment, but why did you not apply b.eng in melb in the first case?.......

note that if you change course after you have enrolled and obtained your student visa, you will need to reapply for a new visa, and pay the fees all over again.....

I saw in the booklet there is a Bachelor of Commerce with a sequence of subjects for engineering.

http://www.eng.unimelb.edu.au/Undergrad/commerce.html

not really sure tho, I prefer to have engineering in it rather than pure commerce.

oh i see.....it's more like having some engineering subjects within the b.com programme........as stated, to use the analytical and problem solving tools of engineering to help in business........

it is NOT an engineering programme per se, and you cannot become a professional engineer with that......but there is an option to do another 2 years leading to the m.eng........

this is part of the 'melbourne model' change.....generally broadening the base, and making the professional courses a graduate programme.....at least there still exist dual pathways for engineering........it's all graduate entry for medicine/dentistry now.......
