QUOTE(caspersky @ Sep 23 2008, 02:48 PM) He means harvesting as a part time job. There are many farms and plantations in Australia and many students do labor jobs during summer break. By the way, it's not just 'picking' fruits off ground, you harvest them. Hmm.. I want to work at EB Games when I apply for my visa that is

I got two offer letters to study engineering as an undergrad, one from ANU and another from The University of Melbourne.
So far from what I can gather (by personally inquiring some forum user who happen to study in these two universities), Melbourne University is a pricey option - from accommodation to living expenses; ANU on the other hand is much more affordable and distraction is kept to a minimum.
Also from all the comments I received, majority of them will agree that ANU and Melbourne University are equally good, generally. Melbourne University is well known for its engineering. In order for me to ultimately decide between these two universities, I need comments from students @ ANU who are doing engineering. I heard ANU is weaker on the engineering side, but to what extent?
If there's anything worthwhile for me to reconsider Melbourne University, I would like to hear more about it as well.

QUOTE(z3r0717 @ Sep 21 2008, 01:18 AM) Hi guys, I'm planning to go to Aussie to study next year. I'm planning to take Multimedia course. I went to IDP for information and found few universities which are quite suitable for my course. I see that no one here is studying in swinburne university of technology, would like to know is this university ok? Because i heard from my friend that this university is not that good in education. So i would like to hear opinions from you guys. I have also chose curtin and university of adelaide. If you guys could recommend me some university for my course, i would appreciate it. Thanks! erm... no1 seem to answer my question.. can someone help me?

While I cannot say about the standard of Engineering in ANU and Melb, I would recommend looking at other factors such as cost of living, air accessibility (Canberra is probably the only, or one of the few capital's in the world at least, without an regular international flight), social links etc, in deciding where to go. Good Luck!

Good Luck! I communicate with them through PM, sorry for the confusion, (by referring to their usernames at the front page of this thread, under "LIST OF MEMBERS STUDYING/STUDIED IN AUSTRALIA") Yeah I notice that getting to Canberra requires internal flights in Australia, say from Melbourne to Canberra. Which prove to be a little expensive for me to fly back to Malaysia, but I'm sure most of us Malaysians won't go back that often, would we? As for social links, should be aplenty in Melbourne; Canberra not so sure...

From Canberra, you can take the bus to sydney and fly from there. It costs about 15-30 aust dollars (depending on whether there are cheap tickets when you book) for one way on the bus, not really that expensive. I don't believe that ANU is weaker in Engineering than Melbourne Uni. Melbourne Uni offers a wider range of majors though. ANU does not have Chem or Civil so if you're looking to major in one of those then go to Melb. The good thing about studying at ANU is the smaller class size. I don't know how many people do Engineering at Melb but I'm sure it's a lot more than at ANU. Most of the Engineering students are Aussies too so it gives you the opportunity to interact with the locals. At the same time there's also a pretty active Malaysian Students Organisation at ANU so you can still find friends from home.

Onyx_black,why didnt you consider to do engineering in UNSW?
Engineering is one of the UNSW's strength and they offer more than 20 kinds of engineering here.
It's cheaper than Melbourne while there is still places to hang out.

Still,if you want to try,you can try New College. If im not wrong,i think that one is easier to get but it cost $350 to stay there per week. I think it would be better to find accommodation around the uni when you are there. This is my 2 cents.

One more thing, I found out that ANU has Electronics Systems Major, is it similar to Melbourne University's Electrical Engineering? (I assumed they've changed it from Electrical and Electronics Engineering) I'm interested in E&E major. Edit: UNSW offers Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, what about Electrical and Electronics? This post has been edited by Onyx_black: Sep 24 2008, 09:14 PM

QUOTE(lawl @ Sep 24 2008, 08:29 PM) What is the difference between conditonal and unconditional offer? A conditional offer means that you still have condition(s) to be fulfill like the uni need your final exam or your IELTS results. You just have to send them the information they need. Then, they will send you an unconditional offer that means you have been accepted into a uni.The uni probably just waiting fo you to pay the fees. Do correct me if im wrong.

Anyway if by any chance you could, my advise is just apply for all the colleges available if you are really keen in getting on-campus accomodation, like what cheesenium has said, it is hard to get one so don't bother choosing which to apply, just apply for all.

QUOTE(lawl @ Sep 24 2008, 08:29 PM) What is the difference between conditonal and unconditional offer? if you applied without definitive results, they may give you a conditional offer, ie conditional on you meeting additional requirements, which may or may not be specified.......when you have that additional information eg your final exams results, language requirements etc, you then submit to them, and they will then issue a final unconditional offer....... if specified, they may say you need a ter of at least 95 and ielts band 7.......if you meet them, the offer becomes unconditional automatically........ if unspecified, you will need to submit your final results, and they will decide and let you know..........

Uni student missing in Australia (updated) from thestar.com.my » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « KUALA LUMPUR: A 21-year-old Malay student from Kajang has been missing for about two months in Perth, Western Australia, after abandoning her final semester in Curtin University of Technology.
A team including lawyers is being put together by the Putera Umno community protection secretariat to go there and locate her after repeated pleas for help by her parents - a businessman and a clerk. The parents did not want to reveal her full name, only wanting her to be known as Ipah.
“It’s not an easy job to track her down and bring her back, but we’ll do our best,” said the secretariat’s chief Datuk Abdul Azeez Abd Rahman to reporters on Wednesday, adding that the parents had also filed a police report with the Kajang police station.
According to the report by her mother, the girl had decided to stop pursuing her geology degree after losing interest in her studies early this year. Instead, she had been hired by a Mr Reg as a manager of a cleaning company, said her mother in the report.
Despite pleas by her mother to reconsider her decision, Ipah was adamant not to continue her studies.
“She told her parents that she was unhappy with her field of study and wanted to return home,” Azeez said.
However, in their last conversation last week, the mother learnt that Ipah had recently been discharged from a hospital there after swallowing 50 paracetamol pills because she could not handle the work pressure.
Since then, Ipah had swithed off her handphone and has not contacted her parents.
It was learnt that the girl had been a bright student who scored nine A’s in her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia.
She has been in Perth for three and a half years pursuing a geology degree under a scholarship by a major government-linked company.
She was supposed to have finished her course in another six months but had wanted to stop studying and return home on July 15.
The parents were there to greet Ipah but they learnt she did not board the flight.
To preserve their identities, the parents had declined to appear during the press conference and instead requested the secretariat to speak to the press on their behalf.
Azeez urged all parents with children studying overseas to remain in constant contact with their children.
“Check on them often and look at how they are doing, their progress - whether they are your sons or daughters,” he said.
like typical msia said; someone`s son / daughter till got such privilege search n rescue
