the taxing system here is just pure craziness. you can be taxed as high as a tad below 50% (49.5% if memory serves) if you have an extremely high salary.
*
Haha, even worse if you have GST dockets. I have to make quarterly GST payments to the ATO and still do my tax by hand, keep all recipts for 5 years (will probably have a mountain load by then) and have my ABN written on everything above 75 bucks. Plus my hours have to be logged nicely on my BAS so the DIAC doesn't revoke my visa. Not to mention, i pay for medicare when i'm not entitled to it due to ATO considering me a resident laugh.gif.

There's also a 108 dollar surcharge if i pay late. Taxes, they'll get it out of you more efficiently than they deliver other services tongue.gif

You know. Malaysian tax is so much easier. Just don't fooking pay.

Driving Taxis is considered self employed. So for all means and purposes, i'm technically a business entity.

I wonder if the ABR will allow me to change my legal business name to "He who has huge balls" tongue.gif (so regret not trying when i registered sad.gif)

Thats why you should employ an accountant!

I believe you would be entitled to a refund of your medicare levy paid as you are not entitled to it.  Check when you submit your tax returns.

*
Yeah, called the ATO about 2 hours back and they passed me to medicare to ask them for a levy exemption cert. Looking for a pharmacist to stamp the copy of my passport, as i'm not on good terms with the police (goddamnit, female coppers here talk as though they have something to prove to me, not to mention far more rude)

Only two things certain in life. Death, and taxes.

GST is generally the government's money. I collect GST on the government's behalf, so there's no worming my way out of it or reducing it, hiring an accountant is just gonna add to dollars that fly away tongue.gif. As a wise once man said, the tax office is bad enough when you don't pay them your money, imagine what happens when you don't pay them their money.

PAYG on the other hand for me is an estimated ass raping 15 percent. Haih, can i argue that my uni education will help my advancement as a taxi driver? Atleast that's deductible. Food costs cannot claim, they figure you'll have to eat anyways laugh.gif

Chinese retaurant sounds good right now. I just gave the ATO 220 bux which could have been used for many KFCs.

PSSTT : Anyone know how to cheat on tax here?

empire23:  Correct me if I'm wrong but you are only required to register for GST if your turnover is above 75k.  I'm sure your turnover isn't anywhere near that so are cab drivers an exception to that?

There's no real way to 'cheat' tax (legally), but there are ways to minimise tax.
*
I'm technically a sole trader and yeah, cab drivers are an exception because our fare is GST inclusive.

Minimizing is really hard, because there are little in terms of cost here. I could have done fuel cost deduction and maybe upped the cost a little tongue.gif, but my bailor takes care of my fuel costs.

Anyways, anyone have a first home saver account? Seems like a good way to rip off taxpayer money by getting 17 percent govt contribution and get it tax free at that, although the catch is that you can only take it out in 4 years and that there's a limit to how much Canberra will pay sad.gif. Seems like a good idea if you're going to get a PR Visa.

yupz double checked at immi.gov.au......during semester can work up to 20 hours.....but in holidays can work UNLIMITED....does that mean taht we can work 8hourjob during the day and then go drive cab at night??? hmm.gif coz i heard that theworker / human rights thingie sorta limit the maximum hours one can work.....sth like they dun wan u to take all OT n stuff.....
*
No limits to the hours you can work as long as you agree to it and are not under union rules for specialized work (QT train driver, public transport, public servant) . But if you drive cabs, QT or Queensland Transport has a 16 hour maximum for 24 hours, after that you can't login your radio network. PROTIP : You can still take hails for cash and still make a killing with off meter cash jobs. Although being an unsafe driver will make other cabbies look bad so i don't recommend it. We do pride ourselves on having good driving skills.

Made 1300 minus tax and GST driving taxis at the Indy 300 for 4 days. Recession? What Recession? lol. Got 2 spewers though.

Damn the Aussies love their public drinking don't they?

Don't compare us to the chumps down in Melbourne, we have standards. My friend went down there and a cabbie refused to take him where he wanted to go, and he just told the cabbie "i'm a cab driver in queensland, and we never do this kind of shit, you're a disgrace to the profession". Technically by Law we can deny a ride if it causes "Annoyance", but this is a broad definition, but we aren't picky over here, even if you want to haul your ass to the next street nearby, we'll do it. But we do make up for it in temprament, if you saying something insulting or shitty, we'll respectfully ask you to get out of the cab in the middle of a dark highway or we'll send out an A12.

But as an incentive, just say "i'll pay you cash", most will oblige. If i go into places which inconvenience me greatly, i usually tell the customer that i prefer a "cashie", all will oblige. Most Aussies understand the shit we have to go through if there's a jam or it's hard to return, and most are more than happy to even offer extra than the quoted cash price. I got 50 bucks for driving a girl 3km to Mitre10 and helping her buy a toilet bowl and she offered it. As long as you're nice and obliging, you'll never run out of cash, we're in the service industry anyways.

If you wanna apply for cab driving, you'll have go through the following;

1) Visa Work Permit, 65 dollars. Apply through DIAC online
2) Australian Driving Licence, Around 250 for lessons (MUST), 100 for registration, driving tests, written tests.
3) Apply for TFN, ABN and GST. Whoa, you're a taxpayer now
4) Taxi and Limo driver training course, 200 dollars give or take, English course included.
5) Go to a Doctor with the Medical Certification form (Yellow) and get him to give you a medical check and sign.
6) Australian Driver Authority, Another driving test with higher standards (Free), 40 dollars for Police Background check, 60 dollars for 1 year license. I applied for code T and L
7) Register yourself with a radio firm and then choose a management agency or owner
8) Enjoy your driving

It took me a good 3 months to get all this shit done.

if i were to buy a house, will that help increase on the point system ?

i will ngam ngam stay here for 2 years after i graduate...but not sure wheather i can get the 120 point for PR

and aslo i heard only people with PR status are eligible to buy house in Australia ?
*
No it will not help.

Anyone can buy a house, as per everywhere on earth. Money talks.

I do suggest going into ANZ Bank and enquiring about the first home saver account if you wanna buy a house. I do suggest registering yourself for PAYG taxation and TFN before doing so though.

If you're in QLD, asking for the FHOG or First Home Owner's Grant can also further offset costs.

what happens is that many malaysians, in particular chinese who want to have "dual citizenship" will normally do so using two names
Say Mr. Tan Ting Tong wants to be an aus citizen but doesnt want to lose his malaysian citizenship will just become Mr. Albert Tan in australia and Tan Ting Tong in Malaysia, leaves aus on an aus passport and enters malaysia on a malaysian passport and the other way. Unless you get into big trouble and noticed by the gov in malaysia, you should be fine.
*
Which reminds me, i never use my real name anymore, it's too hard for the Aussies to pronounce.

So i just carry around my father's name, Yusof. Easier that way. Which is wierd, the DIAC allowed me to cut the Bin out of my name, but Transport didn't allow me to cut it out of my DA and Standard License.

So my first name is Mohd Syafiq Aizat Bin Mohd. with Yusof as my family name. Goddamn transport. They're only good for making my life harder and sending me fines with stupid taglines like "Every K over is a Killer"

Let's see how many transport "tag lines" we can post here laugh.gif

lol, just got back from weekend work. Aussie police are a joke i tell you.

Man gets beaten up, wallet stolen, clothes torn, everything taken, so he goes to the police station in Surfers and gets turned away 3 times. So he comes up to me for help, asks me to take him back to Nimbun in NSW, says he has a business and money, but can't prove it, so i take him to the cops and try to confirm it, he knows his DL number, so i take if they search it up they can atleast confirm his name.

Those f***ing coppers just told me off and said "mate, he's yours and none of our problem, we have nothing to do with this". Seriously, he's a citizen of this country and you're supposed to bloody help him, if i were beaten up, all my shit stolen, i'd expect the cops to help me. So if the Aussies themselves wouldn't help him i would, asked him where he could get some help. He says Cooloongatta, which is a 60 dollar fare. I do it because i figure i can get a job at the airport. I do it for free because i feel if nobody can do him right, i will.

So i take him to the airport where he pleads to me to take him to Nimbun, i say i can't because i need to earn cash or my boss will rape my cabbie ass. So i lend him my phone to call his mom. She doesn't pick up, so i can't do much. He walks off thanking me and goes to look for a ride.

Later the mom calls back and confirms everything, so she rushes to Cooloongatta from Nimbun to pick him up. I get a fare and drive off to surfers. Guess what, not end of story. Australian Federal Police pick the poor man up and want to charge him for Fare Evasion. Geez, wtf?! I gave that man a free ride.

Base calls me up and tells me the police want to charge the man, i call the AFP up and generally tell them to lay off the man and that i can't give a shit about the "supposed" fare. They then say they'll let him go, but i must drive back to cooloongatta (a bloody waste of time) to make a statement, so i did.

But those bloody coppers are untrustworthy here, so i called his mom to try and help. After i'm 90 percent of the way there, base calls and say cops don't need me now. Goddamnit, a waste of a good 30 minutes.

Lesson learned. Aussie cops suck. They really have nothing better to do and probably have some "arrest" or "being an *******" quota.

Coppers here are of the NTBD variety. My taxi boss told me when they lost a rugby game to the Army, they boh song and started going out in force and harassing people with stupid speedtraps and multiple breath tests. During indy300, they would just come up to the taxis, open our door, shout at us and slam it shut.

I've had enough shit with QLD police in the 10 months i've been here to know that they're generally tards and tools.

You'd think after 5000kms of flying from home the cops would be better right? Hell no, they're the same. I've met some good cops who were nice enough, but most of them are a snarky bunch who have powertripping issues.

No P needed.

I think it's the 3 strikes rule when it comes to driving without a license on hand.

If you don't have a DA when driving a public vehicle or general one, one strike and your lesen is gone.

Get it translated and carry the translated version around just in case any cops pull you over and ask for it. Granted, the information on our licenses is pretty self-explanatory, but you'll never know which NBTD cop wants to muck around with you and invites you over to the balai with an excuse of "I don't understand the language on your card".

If you are in QLD, expect NTBD cops to be the huge majority. Even the cops up in the GC are giant shitbags.

I'm doing my final year for my eng course, you will type most of your assignments and any crap laptop will suffice.

The real meat of your work will be done with specialized programs and machines at the uni, software examples include MATLAB, PROE, AUTOCAD, MATHCAD, ORCAD, Altium and others, equipment (which you will use alot in your final year) will include Lathes, Testing machines and other equipment which you can't really put in at home.

Erm, it's kind of obvious that all laptops and PCs generally come with the ability to read CDs/DVDs and have burning capabilities.

If you didn't know that, maybe engineering isn't your calling.

EDIT : My friend got 0.4 marks short of passing and the lecturer just gave a firm NO. Talk about being cruel.
