barricade has brought up some interesting points about 1024x768 HD and 1440x1080i digital video cams being fullHD even hitachi's ALis 1080p which is like 1280x1080... or something like that.. lots of marketing mumbo jumbo,
gogo2 shouldn't be too anal about it... I know you want to follow ATSC's definition rather than CEA (more consumer type marketing) but no need to harp about it too much lor.. marketing people mah.. surely more "creative" in inventing their own specs...

Thank you for your elaborated explaination. It was an educating post.

For me, I'm just looking for the best PQ display to watch movies - day in, day out. At the moment, plasma is my choice. Being contemplating the kuro 428xg or panny 42py800 - cause as u said, my watching distance is merely 4 meter (max).

For other purposes that require a "certain" monitor with "certain" capabilities, i will look for that "certain monitor". I dont really believed in the "ALL-IN-ONE" gadget - something has to be compromised in order to keep all the features, hence, it looses some..

So, help me to decide which to buy - Kuro/Panny

Next, point me to the best price/deal.. thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

With all this discussion on full HD vs non full HD panel, prioritize your needs and budget. I'll give some advice based on my observation:

LCD vs Plasma (no comment as I'm plasma supporter. Motion smearing is a big issue for me and the LCD CCFL backlight is too bright. CCFL is based on fluorescent light and flicker at a constant 50hz (US is 60hz). Try use a video cam and point at the LCD screen. You can see flicker that is due to the flickering is not in sync with your video cam ). Unless it is using something like panasonic inverter lamp which flicker at much higher frequency.

Size - bigger the better. Seriously, for less than 8 feet, 42" is OK. Anything more than that better get a 50" or higher (if your wallet permit).

Full HD vs Non full HD. If you use HTPC, you definitely need 1:1 pixel. Most 1080p display will be able to support 1:1 pixel mapping or make sure you defeat overscan option. As for debate between 1024x768 vs 1366x768, I would agreed best get 1366x768 if you need 1:1 mapping as your aspect ratio would be correct. Based on my old 42" PV60, the panel is 1024x768. In order to get correct 1:1, I can only use VGA input at 1024x768 resolution. Although the font is sharp, but the aspect ratio is incorrect. Always problematic when playing movie using HTPC and had to use MPC to rescale the aspect ration which is troublesome. Not to say impossible but not for normal user. 1366x768 will save you lot of times from tweaking.

So for movie watcher, the priority is Size then HD panel.
For dual use as PC, the priority is HD panel then size.

Make sense?

I 100% support you. I'll never buy anything below 1366x768 resolution.
My dream is to buy 1920x1080 resolution Plasma or Projector. Still waiting
until the day come when 1080p is standard resolution for TV.

I think Plasma is bad because 1024x720 only. It's not 1:1 mapping to 720p movie. I feel sad for people who bought such resolution that is not
even half/fake HD.

Astro resolution is just SD or lower (non-digital broadcast). And 46" is
Widescreen resolution. I guess the TV stretch and enlarge the pixel with
averaging algorithm. So of course the PQ looks bad. Only CRT TV will
give you good  PQ with Astro.

ok ... thanks for that info ... i just thought that my setting is wrong at the TV and i tried every settings already ... didn't give me good PQ ...

Regarding fullHD vs HD ready, at the shop, it is quite hard for my eyes to actually see the difference. Need people to actually tell me one is FullHD while the other is not. Was comparing a 37' samsung full HD lcd with the pv80. Both looks great. At last, took the pv80 because of screen size, 5 year warranty and astro viewing. Btw, the pv80 is only HD ready. But how come I can set 1080p as the output display for the xbox 360?

i'm getting sick of your posts, trying to change how the world thinks, i think barricade cleared everything for us already, anything which can produce 720 lines is OFFICIALLY DEFINED AS HD READY. perhaps you can go live in your own perfect world where you can try to create a new rule where 42" plasma is not HD ready. doh.gif doh.gif

really not? i tot the world always think that only 1366x768 is HD ready? I've read a lot of
forum and everyone standard is 1366x768. I also agree with what barricade said. But unfortunately,
the world thinks that HD ready is 1366x768. It is you that want to change the world think doh.gif
