"Starting price is $1,406, sandwiched just between the XPS M1330 and M1730. We think it's safe to say we'll be seeing the official launch soon."

You'll probably have to wait for Dell to launch this product, because on one hand you don't know the price yet (for Malaysian market) and on the other hand there might be optional parts and add-ons for you to customize your notebook to suit your needs and budget.

Added on January 8, 2009, 12:56 pmDell Studio XPS 1340 and Dell Studio XPS 1640 is officially available at Dell's Store USA.

Click on the links below to check out the specs*:

Depending on your requirements, wants/needs factor & budget/willingness to spend.

"The Studio XPS 16 is in a prime position to outmuscle one competitor, the slick but slightly flawed Gateway MC7803u. The Dell's advantage speaks to the idea that you can get a little luxury in your laptop without having to shell out a fortune."
Source: Washington Post & PC World.

Is it a major improvement based on the previous XPS models?
A little bit; this is the first in the XPS line to fit a 16" screen, processor bumped up to Centrino 2, RGB LED display is better than conventional LCD dislay, backlit keyboard is pre-installed, and design wise the Studio XPS receive a bigger improvement over its predecessor.

Performance/gaming wise, what do you think?
First post contain links to some reviews, anyways I brought them here,

Thanks alot onyx_black, your first post detailing on the laptop specs and price are very informative !

Btw what do you think if you compare the Dell Precision M4400 with this ?

Which is a worthier buy and would last longer ?

You're welcome, jacksonyong.
Dell Precision M4400 Mobile Workstation is a different kind of animal compare to the XPS Studio 16 (I assumed you're comparing with that), The Precision line is more tailored towards the business professional or graphics designer crowd.
As I have yet to know what you're using your laptop for, I can't give further comments.

The Precision M4400 graphic performance should be equal or higher than the studio xps 16.

I've read somewhere that its equivalent to a 8700GT - depending on use of DDR3 and turbocache, it should be even faster.

It is not registered at notebookcheck.net though.

If you're using it as a multimedia unit, get the xps16. Screeen when upgraded is good, got sound system the subwoofer really helps, blu ray option.

Another case in point is that gaming with a workstation graphic, you may get lower frames than a normal consumer graphic.

This is due to driver optimization done differently.

The hd 3670 is adequate, at 4855 if you push to 1280*1024 it should be 4600+.

Heck even a Acer 6920 using 9500GS benchmarked at 1280*768 achieved 3661 and able to game Crysis at 1024*768 medium. You could mix up the settings to include high, though. Your mileage may vary.

At the end you'll have to look at the specs you choose. I shall comment on the SXPS 1640... IMHO, I'd look at it from a size comparison way: How many 16" laptops are there in the market now???

So far, I've only known these in the Malaysian market:
Dell Studio XPS 1640
HP HDX 16T
Sony Vaio FW

By comparison, I'd say the HP is the best value for money, where if you customize the Dell to match the HP, you'll overshoot RM6k by at least a few hundreds. The FW with the matching specs will cost even more.

And what's more: the HDX 16T gives you a numerical keypad, great for me as I key in a lotta data, while the 1640 and the FW doesn't have one, and instead they waste the space for nothing...

Lastly, when choosing a 16" laptop, think why you're buying one. I'm buying one for its great aspect ratio of 16:9 to watch HD movies. So which screen amongst all 3 is the best? I'd say the Vaio FW has the best here, but the HDX 16 has the UltraBrightview double lighting to make movies look brighter and sharper.

If you look at the older XPS models, the new 16-incher is not much of an improvement, though I can't comment much on the new Audio system on it with a subwoofer, as I really don't know the quality on it. But hey, Dell's got an RM500 rebate (if your specs exceed RM5k) for CNY, go for it! laugh.gif

Great post. I'm still very conflicted over whether to get an xps studio 16 or hp hdx 16t. If hp malaysia allowed personal customizations, they'd have me as a customer already. I just don't feel 100% satisfied forking out rm6000 for the provided specs with only one year warranty. At least with dell, I can upgrade and get 3 yrs warranty plus rm500 rebate. Sigh, decisions, decisions.
