hybrid graphics... mmm.. i can look foward to find buyers for my Asus G1s dy... having backaches these days lolx

XPS will be a sub-brand of Dell's Studio line.

QUOTE(jonuslee @ Aug 27 2008, 11:18 PM)
What GPU will be offered??NVIDIA or ATI?
*
One thing's for sure, NVIDIA GPU will be available as an option, since the slides mentioned the availability of Hybrid SLi; Dell may offer ATI GPU, we don't know yet.

QUOTE(moto-moto @ Aug 28 2008, 12:22 AM)
but it is already august, why i can't see any montevina on xps and studio yet???
*
This question pop up a number of times @ NotebookReview forum, according to atbnet (one of the forum member there) Montevina will arrive on current XPS line at about the end of August <-> early September.

I can get first hand information regarding Dell new products. the source from somebody.... sorry unable to tell who is...
for example: before that there is studio 15 & studio 17 photo deak on Engadget but no model and name confirm that time.
most of ppl guess is new inspiron model that follow xps design.
But I already knew in advanced its called Studio; new series of dell end user notebook.
( can check my previous post )

other latest news like: beside Studio Hybrid on sell now, estimated there is normal Mini Tower & Slim Tower Studio Desktop launch sooner also, Alienware coming soon next year with notebook first, follow by desktop. everyone know that Dell also join to fight on NetBook or UMPC categories with 8.9" & 12.1" NetBook. Dell also join Nettop. Nettop is also low-cost computer like NetBook which is using low-power processor Intel Atom in Desktop. will implement in Vostro Desktop Series.

Fair enough, keep us updated if you have any future insider news. smile.gif

LOL...but need to wait 3 more months...this is too long...i m wondering why they wanna delay centrino 2 product, where other brand already on the market...
*
Intel Centrino 2 aside, don't forget most of the cool stuff such as LED Backlighting, Illuminated keyboard and Hybrid SLi technology are not available on most of the current Centrino 2 based notebooks. That's why I'm excited as to how XPS Studio will turn out, two other notebooks I have in mind for Christmas purchase is the HP Pavilion dv5t and Toshiba Qosmio F55 series. Both these notebooks have a good set of speakers, decent ~ adequate GPU performance (especially the Qosmio, with NVIDIA 9700M GTS) but they lack LED display and Hybrid SLi which I crave most. Before I went off on a tangent (which I already did), I really hope Dell throws in DDR3 to make it a complete 'next-gen' package.

guys.. will this new xps studio model be launched in malaysia? or it will be months after launched b4 it is available in malaysia?
*
Well, we're not even sure whether these slides are genuine, I'll say 50/50.
Usually it will take a longer time for new products to arrive on Malaysian shores, not sure exactly how long, but like you've said it'll probably be a few months time. (approx. less than 3 months, more than 1 month? Just my rough estimation, I might be wrong.)

Predicted specs at a glance

Based on Dell's leaked slides:

- Centrino 2 (Montevina) Based system: 10666MHz FSB, Intel PM45 & ICH9M chipsets.
- DDR 2 & DDR 3 SODIMM RAM support, max capacity: 4GB
- Integrated Webcam with facial recognition
- Integrated Biometric fingerprint scanner
- 13.x" widescreen LCD with edge-to-edge floating display
- Integrated wireless solutions: Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, WiMAX, Bluetooth, Ultra-Wideband (UWB) & Mobile Broadband
- Hybrid SLi graphics from NVIDIA
- Slot loading optical drive (Blue-Ray's probably optional)
- Intel Turbo Memory (Probably optional)
- LED Backlit Display (Optional)
- Illuminated Keyboard (Optional)

Based on the pictures of Studio XPS 13:

Left side
1 x Kensington Lock
1 x VGA output connector
1 x Gigabit Ehternet LAN connector
1 x USB 2.0 Port
1 x DisplayPort
1 x HDMI connector

Right side
1 x ExpressCard slot*
1 x IEEE 1394 Connector
1 x Slot loading optical drive
1 x e-SATA/USB Combo Port
1 x AC Adaptor Connector

Front side
1 x 8 in 1 Media Card Reader*
1 x Microphone input connector
2 x Headphone output connector
1 x Infra red port*

Back side
No ports (Only ventilation outlet and battery compartment)

Others
2 x Multimedia loudspeakers
1 x 1.3* Megapixel Webcam
* Specific figures/specifications are unknown, plain guessing at the moment.

First impressions:

The integrated loudspekers are tiny! Don't expect them to churn out high decibels; sound quality? Won't impress either, stick to headphones or external loudspeakers.

2 USB 2.0 ports (one of them is a e-SATA/USB Combo port, the other is a standard USB port), not quite enough but still better then nothing.

No modem line connector, broadband FTW; dial-up RIP.

Where's the fingerprint reader as promised? Did Dell integrate it into the touchpad?

The top part of the display lid is bound to attract some fingerprints; leather adds a nice touch on the bottom part of the display lid; brushed aluminium will be my guess for the middle part. Does the Dell logo glows? I want.

Palm rest area is glossy too I think, another fingerprint magnet?

Edge-to-edge floating display spells horrid reflections, even if the LCD panel itself isn't glossy; toothpick not included.

No direct access to HDD and RAM sticks, that could be a pain in the butt for upgrading purposes, considering the amount of screws on the underside panel, 10 +/- 2 screws, yeah.

Well, if you're always on AC, good news; once you pop out the battery you wouldn't have to tilt your notebook using an eraser or a pile of books so that it won't losses it balance. Inspiron 6400 for instance or Dell XPS for that matter has one of the four rubber feet on the battery, the notebook will act like a see-saw without the battery in place.

Where are the multi-media buttons? Maybe they're touch senstitive...

The keys on the keyboard looked pretty good, in fact it's very similiar to the keys on the Sony VAIO VGN-FZ11L's keyboard. Let's just hope the keyboard has a great tactile feedback to complement with the looks.

Status LEDs are on the front side of the notebook.

Is it just me or did anyone find those four screws (that are part of the display hinges) staring at you all the time? shakehead.gif An eyesore I reckon. Don't get me wrong, this laptop is gorgeous; piano black finish, brushed aluminium and a touch of leather, it's one of the best looking XPS to date.

Dell decided to retain VGA output and ditch S-Video/DVI output; HDMI and DisplayPort ports are a bonus for those who own a full HD LCD TV.

2 person with 2 headphones, that's where two 3.5mm headphone jacks come in handy.

Some people claimed that slot loading drives can be noisy at times, how true is that statement?

I have high expectations for this notebook's battery life, with Hybrid SLi, LED backlit display and Centrino 2 processor being the main reason why. But these features (and some of them are optional) comes with a hefty price tag.

The touchpad doesn't have a hardware on/off switch (like the one on HP dv5 series), but the touchpad drivers should detect the presence of an external poiting device (mouse) and disables the touchpad.

There's no visible latch mechanism for Studio XPS 13, but I hope the display lid will shut neatly, otherwise the foreign objects might get in between the keyboard and the LCD display during transportation.

Weight shouldn't be an issue with a 13" notebook, it'll probably be less than 2kg without the AC power adapter.

Thank you for your time.

@Onyx_black, the e-Sata port on the right side is a USB/e-Sata combo port, so essentially u're looking at 2 USB ports.

I'm hoping the Blu-ray option is a burner and not just a reader. If that's the case then it'll be my next upgrade.

You'll probably have to wait for Dell to launch this product, because on one hand you don't know the price yet (for Malaysian market) and on the other hand there might be optional parts and add-ons for you to customize your notebook to suit your needs and budget.

So guys, what you think ?

Is it a worthy buy ?
Depending on your requirements, wants/needs factor & budget/willingness to spend.

"The Studio XPS 16 is in a prime position to outmuscle one competitor, the slick but slightly flawed Gateway MC7803u. The Dell's advantage speaks to the idea that you can get a little luxury in your laptop without having to shell out a fortune."
Source: Washington Post & PC World.

Is it a major improvement based on the previous XPS models?
A little bit; this is the first in the XPS line to fit a 16" screen, processor bumped up to Centrino 2, RGB LED display is better than conventional LCD dislay, backlit keyboard is pre-installed, and design wise the Studio XPS receive a bigger improvement over its predecessor.

Performance/gaming wise, what do you think?
First post contain links to some reviews, anyways I brought them here,
Notebookreview.com
PCMag.com Pop-up

Pls give comments

Thanks alot onyx_black, your first post detailing on the laptop specs and price are very informative !

Btw what do you think if you compare the Dell Precision M4400 with this ?

Which is a worthier buy and would last longer ?
*
You're welcome, jacksonyong.
Dell Precision M4400 Mobile Workstation is a different kind of animal compare to the XPS Studio 16 (I assumed you're comparing with that), The Precision line is more tailored towards the business professional or graphics designer crowd.
As I have yet to know what you're using your laptop for, I can't give further comments.

QUOTE(Enigmare @ Jan 12 2009, 05:20 PM)
Lastly, when choosing a 16" laptop, think why you're buying one. I'm buying one for its great aspect ratio of 16:9 to watch HD movies. So which screen amongst all 3 is the best? I'd say the Vaio FW has the best here, but the HDX 16 has the UltraBrightview double lighting to make movies look brighter and sharper.
*
"I will say that images and movies look more vibrant here than on the HDX16t, but photographers might find the screen's glare a bit intrusive. You can check out alternative approaches to improved color reproduction in the Sony VAIO VGN-AW190, with its Adobe RGB screen, and the Lenovo ThinkPad W700, with its internal color calibrator."
Source

So there you have it, Dell Studio XPS 1640 RGB LED Display is better than the HP HDX 16t on images and movies (sorry to burst your bubble here, Enigmare tongue.gif don't get me wrong HP HDX 16 is a great machine; it's just that both companies have different approach in building a multimedia notebook); but Sony FW might be better than Dell Studio XPS 1640 on color reproduction. I've come across with a 15" Sony VGN series laptop, the brightness and colors are truly breathtaking.

Are these laptops comparable with the BenQ s42?
*
You can't really compare Dell Studio XPS 13 & 16 with BenQ's S42, in fact you can't even compare between all three of them; Studio XPS 13 has a 13.3" screen size, Studio XPS 16, a 16" screen while the BenQ S42, a 14.1" screen; screen size affects both weight and battery performance. Besides that BenQ S42 has Hybrid graphics capabilities while both Studio XPS 13 & 16 doesn't. Dell has options for a Blue-Ray optical drive; DVD super-multi for BenQ S42. When it comes to price, the BenQ S42 should be cheaper compare to Dell Studio XPS 16; not sure it'll stack against Studio XPS 13.

Now i saw this at Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop option

256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 9500M-GE with Hybrid SLI® Technology

why 256mb? hmm.. should the ati 3670 be better? or is this 9500m-ge combined sli with 9400m?? which would be better?
*
Yeah, Dell just added that option; it wasn't there a few days ago.
ATI 3670 is available for Studio XPS 16 only. NVIDIA 9500M is the Hybrid SLi option, most probably they combine this graphics chipset with a discreet one, not an Intel GMA due to the NVIDIA® GeForce® MCP79MX chipset; I might be wrong though.
