80/100 for DVD is too generous.. should be 50-60/100  subjectively (for me)

if count pixel information it will be 5-6times lower than 1080p...

of coz, depends on what kind of TV you got.. if you got 854x480 early Gen PDPs then not much diff between DVD and HD 720/1080. since the screen can't display all the information from the source.. if you got 1080p projector blown up the 120inches screen. then DVDs will look kinda of sucky even if sitting 6-7feet away..

wink.gif Agreed! Mine judgment is based on my 40" Bravia LCD playback. I too might change my scores if I have a bigger LCD or HD Projector hmm.gif

well i find that the 5.1 audio on a mkv file is not as clear as dvd 5.1, especially DTS.

i find the mkv is a little muffled. unless im not using something which you guys are.
so some how i still go buy some nice dvd to watch.

using the Hardware decoding from my soundcard. the DD and DTS sounds much better, clearer and louder.

although i m very impressed with mkv able to carry 5.1 info..

the other thing i wanna ask. can the audio codecs output spdif into my soundcard so that i can use my soundcard to decode the sound.

if i use power dvd to play, i set audio output to spdif.

anyone tried spdif output for mkv ?

Agreed. For me DVD is 50/100 only. Even on 32" HDTV LCD(1360 x768), the difference is like day and night. It is not only the resolution, but the encoding format. H264 is a much more advance encoding than the ancient MPEG-2 used in DVD, hence the superior quality.

i think it has something to do with your source. Not all mkv's are ripped the same. Check out the audio bitstream info. Also some mkv's are only 2 channels MP3...doh.gif.

Also, your software/driver settings could also be a factor.

Lastly. what do you mean you 'output SPDIF' to ur soundcard? If you enabled the DD/DTS decoding of your sound card (also make sure ur sound card capable of DTS, not all sound card are capable to decode DTS i think), it's already been done. You only pass through the DD/DTS signal if you want to decode in an external receiver.

in Blu-ray codecs comparison, MPEG2 acterly not too bad, subjectively, consensus say H264 is best, then followed by MPEG2, which seem to be better than VC-1/WMV but at expense of higher bit rate.. (take up more space)

so I think MPEG2 still can fight if space is not an issue (like in BD50 dual layer discs)..

dvd is much better than vcd. if u contented with vcd and astro and so be it...

get a rm10 copy (not the cinema recording or fake subtitles) i 100% believe u will enjoy the movie....

pixel peeping is usually the first week when u buy the LCD/DVD player/BD/DVD

after that, a good copy is enuff....

if your display is revealing enuf, you will always be reminded of inadequate resolution of the movie directly (irritating Jagged diagonal lines) or indirectly (slight softness in upscaled video)..
that's why many people don't really notice astro crap quality (or still watchable clear transfer VCD) with their 100Hz CRT until they move on to HD flat panels..
