80/100 for DVD is too generous.. should be 50-60/100 subjectively (for me)
if count pixel information it will be 5-6times lower than 1080p...
of coz, depends on what kind of TV you got.. if you got 854x480 early Gen PDPs then not much diff between DVD and HD 720/1080. since the screen can't display all the information from the source.. if you got 1080p projector blown up the 120inches screen. then DVDs will look kinda of sucky even if sitting 6-7feet away..

QUOTE(willphang @ Feb 2 2009, 06:33 PM) Agreed! Mine judgment is based on my 40" Bravia LCD playback. I too might change my scores if I have a bigger LCD or HD Projector later buy better display, every thing SD looks sucky and also need to upgrade..

QUOTE(Matrix @ Feb 3 2009, 04:44 PM) Agreed. For me DVD is 50/100 only. Even on 32" HDTV LCD(1360 x768), the difference is like day and night. It is not only the resolution, but the encoding format. H264 is a much more advance encoding than the ancient MPEG-2 used in DVD, hence the superior quality. in Blu-ray codecs comparison, MPEG2 acterly not too bad, subjectively, consensus say H264 is best, then followed by MPEG2, which seem to be better than VC-1/WMV but at expense of higher bit rate.. (take up more space) so I think MPEG2 still can fight if space is not an issue (like in BD50 dual layer discs)..

if your display is revealing enuf, you will always be reminded of inadequate resolution of the movie directly (irritating Jagged diagonal lines) or indirectly (slight softness in upscaled video).. that's why many people don't really notice astro crap quality (or still watchable clear transfer VCD) with their 100Hz CRT until they move on to HD flat panels..

QUOTE(samlee860407 @ Feb 6 2009, 10:15 PM) lol , hell no the difference of a 4gb or higher quality rip file is so much difference from a normal movie file I think he meant watching on 29in CRT TV.. if the input is just PAL/NTSC component/svideo/composite, you won't get HD resolution anyways..

QUOTE(samlee860407 @ Feb 7 2009, 07:09 AM) but it will still be better than those small small file >..< maybe like very small improvement... cos already down rez to PAL/NTSC mah.. but if the CRT can accept HD ready 1080i component, then maybe can see much better improvement when playing those HD download files..
