SG is in a recession now. Certain sectors are hit badly and are retrenching instead of hiring. But as you flip through the recruitment newspaper, there are still many other job vacancies. You just have to be less choosy and pray for your luck.

for those who are working in SG Gov sector, be prepared for pay cut in recession. However, the cut will be in stages if need to and varies according to your salary scale. the more you earn the higher is your cut. The salary scale has a varibale component which allows the cut to be taken up to maximum of ..depending what category you falls into. I understnad too that some companies also follows SG Gov practice. This variable portion permits company to reduce salary instead of retrenching its staff.

The last recession, the cut was not that much, though higher pay staff generally got 5% cut while as mentioned in the press, Ministers got >10% cut. I myself got <5% cut while my colleagues got 5%

I got a feeling that my company will exercise pay cut... or even retrenchment. Is it compulsory for a company to pay (or compensate?) employee for retrenchment?

normally 1 month pay for each year of service, plus the notice (1 or 2 month depend on offer)

Citibank, DBS, HSBC, RBS all being hit by recession !!!

But according to news, CItibank stay committed to Sg where 50,000 jobs cut in worldwide due to the financial crisis.

One of my frenz working in RBS, her salary being cut after all this crisis. Some of her colleagues are cut out from the job with 1 week notice.

This crisis will remain for 1 more years. so just hope for the best & everything can resolved to normal back.

it really depends on the company establishment. A very small company will pay you back the notice only, as per stated in your emplyment letter, if any.

Those '1 month for every year' standard is the normal standard but not compulsory.

Not to worry folks in Singapore.

Singapore has a track record of bouncing back from recessions fairly quickly due to the government's nimbleness and willingness to change, adapt and innovate its economic drivers.

Only the likes of Malaysia @ Bolehland refuse to admit that an economic slump is evident all around us and will be the last to drag itself out of a looming recession due to the NEP, corruption and totally clueless as to how to grow the economy.
