No, I had worked with local companies and MNC too, both pay me 13 month. One of the company, boss from HK, Malaysian machinists also get 13 month... in fact, minority were locals. Sorry, I had not really refer to the guidelines for donkey years.... those days, it was a recommended guidelines only... but lots have changed including no. of leaves, no longer guidelines, but as a law now. Some I don't really know what else is new and changed. However, just now over news, Gov is seeking public feedback on employment issue, on what I don't know. Tomorrow news paper I see can find anything about what they looking forward to change if any.

Please forgive my laziness from doing research, can someone tell me if there is a specific definition on variable component? My employer does pay variable component but the way it works sounds "weird" to me. Let say company promises one that the salary when joining is 2K and will be raise to 2.3K upon end of probation. However, eventually the promised increment will be stated as variable component. In this case, the employment letter does not mention specifically if the $300 will be coming from basic salary or variable component. Now my doubt is that, when company is not perform well or encounter recession, is it legal for employer to pay you only 2K rather than the promised 2.3K? Hope someone can enlighten me a bit

I just tried, hope I don't mess up. This variable component is something which SG Gov introduced beccause it claimed, heart ache to cut pay. So make some part of salary variable. when times are bad, only cut back on this variable portion (may varies ), not the fixed salary part. Like Fuel surcharge. Fuel price down, no need to charge, helps company to stay alive longer to ride out teh bad times by not giving out the variable portion instead of retrenching people, which is more drastic. People loose their jobs, not even a single cent as income. This was obvious in the last recession in SG... so SG Gov is urging companies to practice this to avoid retrenching workers. In fact, all Gov related agencies follow this rule, This has been practice for years even before I join the Gov service, something which had been implemented long ago during LKY's time, not sure GLC does that.
I work in Gov sector, my pay slip has it all stated clearly, what is variable and is not. Bonus issued also inclusive of these variable component as a whole. So the variable part may be taken away because of that. I think its part of the guidelines, but now made law, practice in Gov sector and some unionised companies, bigger ones too, like SIA, etc... I guess that's the reason why its not reflected in your appointment letter because it being variable component.
