Acacia erioloba - camel thorn tree. The beautiful trees we see on the Savannah Plain in the National Geographic channel.
Very interesting !  rolleyes.gif

hmm.gif  wink.gif

I think.......Stephagorn  can we make an exchange....

..this [attachmentid=3296518] a 3 yrs old Buxus Harlandii  (Boxwood) pre bonsai

for this [attachmentid=3296524]

We can meet up at Zebal's place on a Sunday but only after Chinese New Year,
and after all, I've not been to Ho Min Yuen for more than 2 yrs.

And this one [attachmentid=3296529] is a Premna Microphylla.

Thank you for the offer Bonsailelong. I'm quite flattered...

However, I will not be able to part with any of my camel thorns on my bench... You have good taste and a good eye though... You picked the one that is the farthest along towards bonsai.
That thee s also 3 years old since sprouting from a seed.

I would be up for a trip to the nurseries around Melaka with you guys some time after CNY.

I got this from ibonsai forum about japanese black pine,

"
about 20 years later, and from seed [ Japan, a gift pack posted to me,] I would say no. Additionally, a German guy also told me that the Japanese Black Pine grows all the way down onto the beach in Japan. You may wish to check and see if the Japanese Black Black wasn't originally a Chinese Black Pine and if it came from the coastal area of South China.

What may give you problems is translating the training information from Japan to tropical conditions and responses.

I have several pines and every year add on a few more seedlings, just to keep figuring out the training technique.

I live in the Caribbean, and we have a pronounced dry season from January until around May, growing cooler by October until say February[ lowest normal night temperature 19 deg.c and lowest recorded temperature 15 deg.c ]
Daytime is a standard 30 -> 33 deg.c as summer comes on.
Breezy island.

Soil mix is mostly crushed silica sand [ 70 % ] and compost. Testing the use of crushed, porous, eartheware red brick, from our local brick factories. Gives excellent drainage.
Growing containers are simple, peasant made earthenware lowfired red brick round flower pots, up to 16 inches wide [ 41 cm ] and 5 to 6 inches deep [ 12 to 15 cm ]
Placement full sun with a light zephyr.

See if you can contact Leo de Leon [ Manila ] as he is also growing Black pines.

Hope this helps.
Khaimraj

"

I think i would buy some seed and just try out, the seed are about rm20 for 5+ seeds. anyone want to try together?
*
Sounds like a good idea worth trying... nothing to loose, but it is a very loooooong term project. Count me in.

I wonder whether one can find young japanese black pine trees in Malaysia though?

Hi all,

Here is a guy from the UK who, in my opinion, is just a wizard in turning any old material into beautiful bonsai by adding his skill, talent, creativity, and a whole lot of patience.

link to videos:

Graham potter from kaizen? yes i have been following his videos in youtube lately. Truly brilliant, but the trees are some hard to find here locally. Even the materials he got are great.

So about the black pine, Bonsailelong and Stephagorn is in, G400 you in? Yes i'm buying from ebay, since i'm buying. I'll help you guys buy in the order. It'll be about rm20 for 5+ seeds. It'll take about 2week or 3 for it to reach. Are you guys ok with it? You can pay me when the seeds arrived.

So will be meeting you guys for ho min Yuen after CNY..

I would like to try his techniques on some similar material sourced locally (stumps from local tree/shrub species).

I have managed to rescue 2 stumps so far.

One from a land that will be cleared for development. that is the stump I posted a picture of(hope it manages to grow).

Another one (type of conifer), was dug up by the MPM when they were doing some repair works next to the road. They just left it there for dead, all the roots out and exposed. So that was a lucky find I managed to pick up.

I drove by another 3 stumps from a hedge yesterday. All three were knocked out of the ground by a vehicle. If they are still there come this evening I'll pick them up also before they dry out and die.

such stumps will be long term projects on which I want to try Graham Potters techniques...

Will keep you guys updated.

Hi Jootat,

If I'm not wrong the first photo of "shui mui" you bought is from Sanfong. I've seen quite a lot of this shape there.
It's already 80% done, However I suggest you look into the wiring at the main trunk. Any sign of "eating in", if so
unwire only the main trunk wires.
Another suggestion is that don't put any stone or rock above the soil, in a long run, the weight of the stones or rock is not only
compacting the soil but will also result uneven grow of roots which in turn affect uneven grow of foliage.

For this one which you trained yourself, You are doing a good work.
I suggest you give it a little touch up.

[attachmentid=3299136]

Re pot your " shui mui" in a higher pot, plant it vertical, cover the small exposed roots, leave the big one exposed.
cut the big branches indicated in order to give your tree a balance look. Then cut the top layer of branches shorter, let it have a cone shape image,
wire and pull the lower level of branches a bit lower and let it grow for sometimes before doing further improvement.
*
TQVM sifu Bonsailelong. And you are so pro, see already knew where i bought it. HAHA! Yea, i bought it from there but the lady owner helped me to repot it and she also mentioned that the pot that i choose is bit too large, so she added the stone and also the little deco there. Yea, she told me in another 2 - 3 months i will need to remove one of the wire if i noticed the tree started to eat in. I hope i can maintain this one and learn from there.

As for your suggestion, thanks again. And i will follow your advice. And u mean i shouldn't use this shallow pot for my current shui mei right? I will repot it to a deeper pot then. But tonight and tomorrow night i am running out of time since rushing for preparation for CNY leow. Do you think i can wait till next week?

Hi g400x2

The specie you have is actually a type of shrubby juniper called Juniperus Procumbens.
In Chinese it's called "sleeping pine" but it's not a pine specie.
This specie of juniper is not a good material for bonsai. It's only "interested" in growing
thin, long and side way. And for it's trunk it could hardly grows up to 1.5 ins in diameter
no matter how long you grow it. But to train it to become a thin trunk medium size bonsai is quite easy.

Here is my suggestion for you juniper procumbens. Up root your tree carefully, use a sharp cutter
cut the tree into 2 as indicated with each part with root attached. Plant them in separate pots so that you got 2 plants now.
This specie has very tough life, as long as you don't cut away any roots it will grow.
Let them grow for 2 months to recover then you can start you initial shaping to both of them.

[attachmentid=3299416] The one sloping downwards i suggest you shape it into a cascading or semi cascading style.

For the other one maybe you can try to shape like these.

[attachmentid=3299420] or [attachmentid=3299423]

These 2 juniper procumbens of mine are still under training. I am not so happy with their shapes and hope to improve further one day.

Bonsailelong, tqvm again and again. rclxms.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif for your valuable ideas and recommendations, hahahaa.. become 2 pots of pine... nice one. for the price of one. hopefully i know how to split them properly, and jope can still survive, or else wife gonna 'knock' my head for killing her plants...LOL anyway will only do it after the Chinese New Yaer....now just too busy... thumbup.gif

saw once before in "Mei Mei" Garden. and if not mistaken, TG nursery at lutong got also. I'm in miri~ but i'm not 100% confirm it's a maple xD

oh and i think there's 1 maple tree in my school ( a tree that looks like maple tree ).but the tree looks pretty dead as there are very little leaves on it ( can see all the branches and trunk of the tree ). and the edges of the leaf are yellow. if i got the chance, i'll take a picture of the tree in my school and confirm whether it's a maple tree or not xD

Well, you can re pot any time convenient to yourself.

For the "shui mui" that you bought from sanfong, I suggest you maintain it in this shape constantly.
That means any branches grows out of shape got to be cut away.

Attached Image

This "shui mui" might have a decent trunks and branches but lack of nebari.
If you are willing to try, you can follow my suggestion.
Uproot the tree carefully, cut away the centre main roots, leave all the side roots.
Put a layer of soil at the bottom of the same pot, then place a piece of flat stone right
at the middle of the pot and place your tree right on top of the stone. Then spread out the side roots evenly
and put back the soil. Your pot might be a bit big but it's good for nebari training. Don't worry, your "shui mui"
won't die easily.

Attached Image

If I find time I'll try to do and post a photo series for the bonsai tree nebari training for sharing.

ok ... thx again. You are giving detailed instructions. I will try to maintain it. And also, i think i understand what u trying to say on the nebari traiing. But if possible, i might not try that for now. May be i will go through more information and once i am confident enough to try, then i will proceed with ur suggestion smile.gif

I have a few more shui mei, but let's go one by one ... hahaa

whr u buy the auto watering system and how much? feels like wanna play with it biggrin.gif

yea. the cheapest set of microsprinkler system only costs RM300 , comes with 4 microsprinkler. pls refer to:- KSF1 DIY Package from http://automaticwateringsolutions.webs.com/diypackages.htm. Hydromate has new official website: http://www.hydromateirrigation.com/#!diy-packages

For a basic adjustable drip system, you can get it at only RM265 for 10 potted plants watering system. package is simple one codename K001. Additional 10 adjustable with tube support only RM25. hope you guys benefit from the system. found it useful because big and small bonsai can use single controller and yet your bonsai will get right water because of fully adjustable nozzles.

For me, i am trying to find a camera to capture small size bonsai i have. Not big one truck like yours. no space to put. small area. sad.gif. wife nagging for making the space like jungle. haha.
