offtopic, how much you got for the 4x 2TB, is the MTCS shop near at the bus stop, and Imbi? thanks
*
RM300 each from Viewnet, additional RM10 each for 1 year 1to1 exchange
MTCS shop is the shop with HP logo across the street from Lowyat's main entrance, really hard to miss it

suns8630: with ddns and the correct port fowarding, you should be able to access it from the internet

jchue73: regarding the chipset, i just used the built-in Win7 driver. tried installing using the driver i downloaded from HP's website but i don't think any of the driver got updated as in devmgmt.msc driver provider still shows Microsoft. NIC driver installed just fine though.

btw, i didn't set any raid/spanned volume as i can't afford to lose all my data in case of disk failure.
do tell if any one of you know how to set the drives to raid5 on Windows.
for now i just mount the drives on a single folder for easier sharing and access.

Am I read wrong? If you can't afford to lose the data, you should set the 4hdd to raid 5or6. That would protect your data incase disk failure.

Last 4day ago, 1 out of 4 2tb hdd got problem and the volume degrade. Swap it out and replace with another hdd. The server will generate back the data and everything back to normal with no lost data. Thanks to raid.

Buffalo NAS Linkstation Duo barebone should be around RM320, buy 2x 2TB around RM600, RAID 1 it, data protection, so you getting 2TB effective storage
Total RM920 with 2TB of mirrored storage (RAID 1), comes with http://buffalonas.com/ feature, should be easier to setup than others

Cons: Only 2 bay, can't upgrade further anymore

HP MicroServer, RM919, 4 bay, can install any PC OS, add 2x 2TB = 1.5K

Cons: More expensive setup, more thing to configure but with more features, basically anything you can do with a PC

microserver only support raid0/1, and spanned volume through windows
raid 0/spanned volume array will fail even if a single disk failed, so its not an option
raid 1 waste disk space, so its a no either
that's why i asked if anyone knows how to set raid5 on the microserver (without buying additional card of course)

and i meant i can't afford to lose the data figuratively, its not like i'll die or stand to lose a lot if it does happen

Hi Guys,

I just got my HP microserver and currently running it on Win 7 enterprise version.

Is there any better OS to run it with? since I do not attached it with a monitor and would like to switch it off immediately sometimes (proper shut down takes too much effort)

hmm.. it seems that performance of DS211 and DS211+ is similar

except that DS211+ has hot swap, more ram, esata, sdcard reader

You can try Windows Server 2008 R2 or Redhat Linux. No idea about the shutdown times the Linux OS.

I think trix said it was ok to run the Microserver with Windows 7. Look at his post.

On a side note, I thought I came across a newspaper advert that that the Microserver is now at RM 1200++ or something like that? The specs remained the same though. rclxub.gif

For a simple home server usage, I think there is not much different for me to use Win 7 or Win Server 2008. Any extra benefits to use Win Server 2008? Besides isn't Win Server 2008 is heavier than Win 7?

The Microserver runs very well in Win 7 as it is very light.

The Microserver still price at RM919, with a little bit of bargaining it can be lower.

Windows Server 2008 R2 is built on windows NT6.1 which is the same with win 7. The foot print for win2k8 r2 should be much lesser than win7. Or you can opt the server core installation only. This will install 2k8 without the GUI. Just like linux server edition.

Guys, I have Synology 210j with the updated drivers and all and I'm using D-Link DIR-615 version 7 (the router that comes from streamyx) connected to my 210j. I'm using streamyx to connect to internet.

I'll be going overseas soon and I would want to access my DS-210j files/photos and most importantly continue to download files from it. I'm kinda lost how to remotely access synology doing this way. The synology website provided some information but not that it help me solve the problem.

Has anyone has successfully done this? How/What are the steps? Appreciate help from this community.
