Wah ! Got discount some more? rclxms.gif

The only downside I see for the HP is the RAID. If I remember correctly, in the BIOS, it only support RAID 0 and 1. For RAID5, you need to used AMD's RAIDXpert drivers. No worries cause the drivers can be downloaded from HP site. Small matter as both synology and hp are using software (fakeraid) anyway.
Actually with RAIDXpert under Windows Server 2008 R2, you only get RAID 1 or RAID 0 as per the BIOS. You need to enable RAID in BIOS before RAIDXpert takes over in OS. The RAIDXpert is exactly like Intel's version of Matrix Manager or Storage Manager.

QUOTE(abubin @ Nov 23 2010, 02:42 PM)
I would personally go for HP cause of the upgradability of the RAM and much more powerful processor. Not to mention half the price of synology. And I can install any OS I want. Can even dual boot windows/linux.
Yup. Those are the reasons and features that attracted me to the HP.

how can it support mac os? OSX is proprietary to apple and only run on apple...officially....

However, you can be the first to try out hackintosh on hp microserver.

hackintosh would probably work, but the graphics card would definitely not get hardware accelerated as there are no kexts for it.

I have a similar spec-ed mobo which i run SL on it, had to slap in a 4870 just to have the graphics supported smile.gif

thanks for all the replies. im actually zero ideas about networking but learn a bit by reading online. but couldnt find any specific info regarding n36l setup guide.
if let say i wanna bought the n36l, does it come with an OS? or is it Free Dos?

if no OS, which OS would be best to installed in n36l if it will served win & mac?

for example if the answer above is linux, is it complicated to make a shared folder/setup network server?

Hi,

Been looking into getting a NAS and have been reading this topic. And the HP Microserver popped up here but have a few things that still not clear. Please bear with me.

My intended setup:
PC as downloader ---> HP Microserver OR Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo ---> Gigabit LAN ---> media player

- I read a few users here got the Microserver for Rm900

- Can the microserver be used as a downloader using megaupload or other hosts?

- can media players with LAN able to access the microserver without the DLNA on it?

Thanks.

For HP Microserver:
1. You can load any OS (x86) on HP Microserver
2. Once loaded, you can use it like used to be, thus, you may skip the PC as downloader
3. Depends on loaded OS, I got Windows 7 PC, communicating with Seagate FreeAgent Theatre+ , works fine

Haha...such coincidence...that is exactly the same media player i am planning to get! So i guess I could settle for the microserver, but what about the price...how much did you paid for it? Any additional load out?

Was looking at the drivers for microserver on HP, only windows server...compatible with windows 7 too?

I purchased WD My Book World Edition II recently. The purpose is to stream MKV to my DLNA capable Samsung TV. however the included Twonky Server does not stream MKV files. sad.gif Only AVI.

Can someone gives suggestion which NAS that could stream MKV files straight to my tv? I prefer 4 tb and above.

Thanks.

Have not tried Windows 7 on the Microserver but I would think it should work? I believe mercindustries tried Windows 7 on the Microserver. Perhaps he can give valuable input.

Have you tried renaming the mkv files to avi just to check if it will work?

I cannot speak for the other NAS boxes but I believe with the Microserver that you can run an OS like the Windows Server 2008 R2, you can try installing softwares like TVersity or Mezzmo. These are the two names that often come up when you want to stream mkv files. Have not tried it yet but I think only Mezzmo works on Windows Server 2008 R2?

RM919 from mcts group (the HP shop across the street from Lowyat)
was rushing for time yesterday so didn't feel like browsing inside lowyat to get cheaper deal

it comes with usb keyboard+mouse and also dvdrw drive

one thing to remember is that even though the microserver has 4 hdd slot, 1 is already taken by the included 160GB.

i bought 4 2tb disk only to realize this when setting it up
of course you can move the 160GB disk to the optical drive bay as some already did, but i'm planning to use the bay for a bluray drive.

Congrats trix. Thanks on the feedback for the Windows 7. For the AMD chipset drivers, was it straight forward from the built-in Windows 7 drivers?

How did you solve the audio problem? What sound card did you put in the Microserver?

If you use it as a NAS / download box, perhaps you could shift the DVDRW drive as an external USB unit since the DVDRW hardly gets used.

Oh, if you already plan to add Bluray drive, perhaps you can plan to have it as external USB.

i didn't buy any sound card
the xfx g210 card i bought has an HDMI port, and also HDMI audio (NVIDIA high definition audio)
if you connect it to an LCD TV, shouldn't have any issue to get sound coming out of the box

hahaha for the 1 extra hdd, maybe i'll just plug it in to my desktop, or connect it to the box through eSATA in the future if space is running out
