Seem like alot of ppl is having HD4850, i just make a thread to see how we OC the card. For me, i oc'ed the card to 690/1050 rock stable. Later we can see any sifu out there can teach how to Vmod or do better overclocking smile.gif

ATI HD4850 user:
1. ben3003- Sapphire HD4850 512MB DDR3@ 690/1050

HD4850 Bios Database:
http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.p...face=&memSize=0

What i've heard from them is MSI bios is better at overclocking due to the increased voltage. Grab 2008-06-05 16:52:00 one.

Lolz, yalo, i saw ur gainward review, quite low. But i compare my score with guru3d, theirs also around 1k lower than me at stock.

Added on July 4, 2008, 9:23 amAnother thing is, 3dmark06 is quite low for 4850, becos the SM2.0 score super low.

I am on vista 32bit, ati 8.7 beta driver. The AMD tweaking tools not really good, it screw up with the clock speed becos ati powerplay will switch the whole card into 500/750, but u tweak it, u are tweaking the idle clock to that desired one.

Added on July 4, 2008, 9:53 amI am getting wat driver prob when i ran 3dmark06, but i dont have that prob with 3dmark vantage T.T, is it becos of 8.7beta?

Added on July 4, 2008, 10:04 amI cant run 3dmark06 at 700/1100, keep on say wat ati driver got error, so i ran it at 690/1100.
3dmark score: 11540
SM2.0: 5044
Sm3.0/HDR: 6113
CPU score: 2334

ati never guarantee that 4850 can run 700/1100 for all 4850 rite? i think heat is d main problem for 4850, if u wanna oc, make sure u do ya homework 1st, in this case, cool d heat monster... whistling.gif

most stock cooler are known for slow fan speed, u gotta change it even ur not doin any overclocking as d default speed is not sufficient enough to cool d core. smile.gif

mine is on accelero s1+xigmatek 120mm fan running at full speed i think becos i straight plug into the molex one. Ur processor owes pull out better 3dmark06 score. But i think 3dmark a little bit processor dependant, when processor is better, the sm2.0 sm3.0 mark sure pull up by 300-400 one. Like if i oc my proc to 3.0ghz, sure i can get better score. But my PSU not enuf juice for me to oc both the card. Btw, i uploaded MSI bios that techpowerup forum said it come with higher voltage than normal one.

Added on July 5, 2008, 11:15 amanother question is, is e2160 more powerful than e6300? Or only faster in benchmarking but not in gaming? I tot 2160 only have 1mb cache while e6300 have 2mb cache.

It worked until 1.2v and not higher than that, U can try and see, i dont have multimeter to see it really works or not. I saw ppl from techpowerup forum said so and they tested it. Normally the card only hit 1.1-1.5v.

Added on July 6, 2008, 10:43 amMy card black out at 700/1100 when playing age of conan lolz. Probably more Vmem is needed for 1100 to rock stable. I gonna try 700/1050 for the time being.

i currently cannot increase my clock using bios, dont know why, i already flashed it with the bios that have higher clock, but nothing happens. I tried using GPU-Z to retrieve the bios and it is the changed bios, but i wonder why the clock speed never change. And the Overdrive cannot be closed or lock back edi.

flash it back to stock bios use AMD GPU tools 0.98 to OC smile.gif
CCC only allowed u to oc to around 10% from stock more than that it will locked

A few stroke won't increase the vGPU much de. But best measure with DMM first.

Hey guys,
I doesn't know much about overclock..
i tried to install rivatune and ATITools. but i not sure why, 2 of them are not working for me.
Just want to ask, is that alright to use the ATI Overdrive to overclock?
and i saw some people got 720-750 GPU clock... how do you all get it? i got the maximum only 700.

No need mod bios or pencil mod, there is another way to increase the voltage

<Feature name="CoreVoltageTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="1046" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="1046" />
<Property name="Want_2" value="1200" />

Change the 'want_2' value to 1200. I dont wanna be held responsible if you did something wrong though so do it at your own risk smile.gif

IMO, just accept your highest OC you can achieved without adding 3rd party cooler. Paying rm100++ for a few fps increament it's just not worth it, unless you going to vmod it.

Flash the edited bios back to the card. Edit the original bios using Radeon Bios Editor and flash it using AtiWinFlash. You can get them both at TechPowerup.

usually people benchmark through games. better in real life use.
you could see the reviews and how they do it.
for example company of heroes has it own benchmark function.

3. Edit the bios.
4. Open AtiWinFlash, "load" image.

yes, it's a stock cooler fan from Gigabyte HD4850. (3 years warranty) rclxm9.gif

i set the fan speed at 60%. a bit noisy. so i reduce to 55%. sounds pretty quiet.

i've tried 100%, it sounds like my HD4850 cooler is gonna explode anytime. haha

No screenies of the stressing period ?

Stress test done with AtiTool 0.27 and artifacts detected process were put at very sensitive scanning.

Yea, at first i can only do 1050 on the mem, slowly i burn in them and increase it slowly with folding.

I use AMD GPU Clock Tool to change the clocks after i reached the 700mhz limit on the core, mem i use Ati's own overdrive.

Guys, want ask ar, when i'm doing artifact scanning, I can hear my PSu making some weird noise.. like whistling or whinning? What does it mean? PSU overloaded? I'm using this huntkey 550w (ya i know.. not a branded or whatsoever). and running a gainward 4850 golden sample.

the sound only comes when I start the artifact scanning, happens in both ati tray tool and ati tool.

No need i think, just clock it with you Ati Overdrive would do since it is still within CCC's limit.

AMD GPU Clock Tool is used to oc the card to surpass the CCC limit at 700mhz core and at 1200mhz for the mem

that's is the sound made by gc, come from the coils. google for it

Hi, after observations I'm very sure the sound is coming from the PSU. I've found a few other cases on the internet. One of them is using a CM 700W PSU with 9800GX2 and he has the noise as well.

I don't know how to describe the noise but very much similiar to this, which I assume is probably the same case.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSrf9Jh_8fk

Taiko here who OCed their 4850, what kinda PSU are you guys using? Any noise when stressing the GPU to max?

ps. any sifu free can visit my thread, http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=772911

Thanks a lot.

by the way, i notice most of the HD4850 user out there has low temperature even though the fan speed is low. But mine's a bit HOT. That's weird.

Probably most of you are using after market cooler i guess.

run atitool artifact scanning for at least 6hrs or Furmark for 6hrs see ur card got hang up or not. If furmark can pass, i think gaming also no prob la. Furmark run 100% GPU load, stress ur gpu until the max like how u squeeze the orange for its juice lolz.

i think gainward can be pushed further, but i dunno can it beat sapphire toxic or not. But like i do 690/1100, no prob with accelero s1. If the 8.8 driver allow me to get pass 700 and use 1.2v, i think 720/1100 should be ok.

hmm, the GS version looks okay. besides according to the brochure from moderno, it's using 0.9ns samsung chip. 'so call' faster memory.

but to me, it's all about BEST BUY. haha

the GS has already set 700/1000.
i think i can push more. but i'm afraid the stock cooler from Gainward doesn't release much heat.

even the HIS HD4850ICEQ4 turbo looks good. .... choices!!!! rclxub.gif

ARGH, too many HD4850 product in the market !!!!

hahaha...i understand ur feeling. Already face same situation. sweat.gif

i want to make some correction, its not 0.9ns but 0.8ns (http://www.gainward.com/product/product_detail.php?products_id=178)

iceq4: ofcoz laa it have nice design but it clocked at reference speed (talk about turbo ver. not turbo-x) and it quite expensive too (RM665)

p/s: maybe u can ask whoever that already have iceq4 card to OC their card to the same clock as GS ver. and then compare which one have better cooling solution. thumbup.gif

About the heat, I think the 4850 GS is running quite "cool" when compared to the reference board.

Though it seems that when running at 100% fan speed, can hear a little bit of metal knocking noise. Probably the heatsink vibrating a little due to the fan and knocking against the plastic cover a little.

okay,

on IDLE of stock settings of 700/1100 the temperature is between 45°c - 50°c roughly.

LOAD temp is between 58°c - 65°c on stock speed.

Try 65%, that would be better.. I wonder why you card is so hot, try to improve your inside casing ventilation and open the case to see if the temp would be better.

All using ati tray tools.. spoken too soon, no artifacts at 740 but cant even start crysis benchmark laugh.gif
730 crashed when half-way benching crysis. 720 is stable though tongue.gif

Funny that memory at 1100 is fine.. nothing abnormal yet

Here are some figures

Run #1- DX9 1024x768 AA=16xQ, 32 bit test, Quality: ~~ Overall Average FPS: 34.095
720/1050

Run #1- DX9 1024x768 AA=16xQ, 32 bit test, Quality: ~~ Overall Average FPS: 34.58
720/1100

Run #1- DX9 1024x768 AA=16xQ, 32 bit test, Quality: ~~ Overall Average FPS: 33.47
Default

As you can see, improvement is marginal at best sweat.gif

balance out both, but core will benefit more. But if like u pump over 700 core, it will give less gain, maybe memory bottleneck edi, so u balance both lo.

yes.. i noticed that too ... 700 over core also make not much diff.. zzz

Core > Mem

But if you increase it too much, u need to increase the volts too if not there would not be a differences.

After uninstalling the 8.7, i use Driverheaven's Driver Cleaner Pro to clean the files. Then i restart the pc and install the 8.8 and it says that i dont have supported card. This issue are already discussed all over the net so i guess its not new anymore. Just to share with you guys..

The fact is that ati mislinked the driver.. nod.gif

Running at higher volts would make the pwm hotter than usual, try to put some ramsinks at the pwm and ramsink too if u plan to clock the rams.

Yes, I've increased the vGPU to 1.2v on the MSI bios
670/993, stock vGPU & 1.2v - no crashes in 3DMark06
675/993, 680/993, 670/1000, 680/1000, stock vGPU & 1.2v - crashes in "dragon" test
I think it's due heat issue using stock cooler or PSU draw not enuf juice. sweat.gif

<Property name="Want_0" value="1046" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="1046" />

Better if your card can run at the same speed with lower voltages, higher voltages enables you to clock the card clockspeed higher than stock factory settings plus some extra heat.

Nope, no volt mod or cooler change whatsoever. Just plain OC the card right out of the box. He wants to stretch it to max without any mods. Another OCer Lolhalol managed to score between 750/2300 to 775/2350. Screenshots on his website (see review links below).

Palit 4850 Sonic, if you look carefully, the heatsink is the same. Basically Palit 4850 Sonic is "another 4850 Golden Sample". The board looks the same, heatsink looks the same. Probably manufactured at the same location as well as Palit owns part of Gainward or was it Gainward owns part of Palit.

yea, in 3dmark06 it is faster, but go try 3dmark vantage, u will see how 4850 makes 8800gt sweeps the floor smile.gif This is becos 3dmark vantage is far more intensive than 06, dx10 and so on, more advanced. Don use 3dmark06 edi la..

Yup, you can CF 4850 with 4870 or 4870X2. I haven't tried the scalling in games, but it works in Vantage, P14.6xx with single 4870X2 @ 825/980 VS P17.4xx with 4870X2 @ 825/980 + 4850 @ 825/1200 (ss above).
I have 2pcs 4850 + 1pc 4870X2 here, want to try quad gpu, sadly ma mobo only have 2 pcie slot sad.gif

CFX->more than 2 of the same gpu cores.
CF->just 2 of the same gpu cores.

Actually, AMD had rebranded CF to CFX cause they made a major leap in that technology (not confirmed, my own deduction cuz the CFX menu in ati control panel clearly states crossfirex only).

If not, we would still be stuck using those super big cable linking two graphic cards outside the casing.

Who cares anyway, why would you want normal CF when CFX is there? CFX is just an improvement of CF, not a totally different configuration altogether.

hello guys,

i have gigabyte 4850 1Gb DDR3, 700/993... just want to know how to edit BIOS using RBE? i download my BIOS using GPU-Z and open using RBE... on the RBE, it shows that the state 3 which is maximum performance using only 1) 500/993 1.084v, 2)500/993 1.084, 3) 700/993 ---.

my question is :-

1) which value do i change for better overclock? my gc is stable on 740/1050 using stock cooler and stock Vgpu?
2) let say that on the clock info i change 700 to 800 and flash to my card, will the new clock is 800 or do i need to overclock again?
3) or just change the vgpu volt from 1.084v to 1.158v, flash to my card, and overclock using rivatuner?

i remember that 3dguru review this card can achieve 811 core clock, 1195 ram without modding... how came mine only can only up to 740/ 1050 stable? rclxub.gif

cheers

U'll need GPU-z to extract ur current gpu bios, RBE to edit bios, & WinFlash to flash the bios.

whichever u desire.
but wen u flash, always keep a backup copy of original bios in the medium dat u use.

anything happens, may b error during flashin coz compatibility issues, immediately flash bck 2 ori bios.

most important rule: NVR REBOOT THE PC IF ANYTHING SHALL GO WRONG

well both the 4850 and 4870 cores are the same RV770 core. it's just that by default 4850 is fed with 1.158v for the vcore and 4870 fed with 1.236v, so that i can it be oc'ed higher. Alot of the 4850 3rd party manufacturers actually set the vcore for 4850 at 1.12v or even 1.08v to keep the temp low, but it is possible for us to bios mod it to 1.158v which is the maximum for 4850. with 1.158v we can oc the core speed to 700mhz without sweat. anything higher than that would require a hard mod. u can google about '4850 voltage mod' or '4850 pencil mod'. U will find alot of info about it.

so far my HIS 4850 IceQ can do 700/1130 after soft modding to 1.158v, but any higher oc will crash. smile.gif

Hmm, I manage to do 750/1150 on my GS. Didn't game much, a bit of Warhead and a bit of GRID. Survived for about 30minutes each, didn't crash (yet..) Well, still waiting for the fans I ordered for my case >.< Will try out more when I get them. (Supposed today.. but tak sampai yet haiz).

bro tampoi, mind to tell us which pencil mod u used for your his 4850? coz as far as i know, the first pencil vmod method (the safer one which allows up to 1.4v) cannot be done, coz there's nothing there to paint. so did u use the 2nd one?

I used the right picture shown in your post, there is a resistor instead of a blank spot which you'll give a few strokes and confirm with DMM... Check your ohm before and after good luck thumbup.gif

that's strange, u sure there's a resistor there (where we supposed to draw if follow the 2nd method)? coz mine is exactly the same as the 2nd method's layout. here's a picture of my his 4850 pcb

which is the same as the techpowerup.com's 2nd method

coz i know if follow the first method, there's nothing there to draw (if u note the picture which i have taken) sad.gif

kinda confused, coz our his 4850 pcb layout is totally different. do u mind if u post a pic of your pcb or just draw on the pic i snapped? tongue.gif thanks in advance

Increase the clock info 03-09, from 700Mhz to higher frequency e.g. 750Mhz.
Do the same for RAM. If necessary, increase the voltage to higher e.g. 1.2V.
Save BIOS, flash the BIOS with WinFlash from TechPowerUp, reboot pc & done.

I thought the max vcore that can be edited and recognized by CCC is 1.158v? if u use the older RBE to edit to 1.2v, u won't be able to boot as the ccc doesn't recognize 1.2v?

If you use 1.2v for the vgpu, u need to use Cat 8.7 as that is the last Cat that recognizes vgpu up to 1.2v

coz what i read from other forums, was that the 4850 bios with modded voltage to 1.2v cannot be recognized by 8.8 driver onwards. that's why RBE has limited the voltage value to 1.158v.

4850 CF wins...................................... in most area. won't say hands down....

bcoz some games are not multi-gpu optimized, so either u will see that the performance increase just a little, or it becomes worse (eg. GRID). Not sure the problem is solved by the latest GRID patch, u know la, poor ppl like me can only afford to play the er..hem... version.

Ah too bad cant use the asus top bios ingame. Will give artifact and corrupted texture. To my surprise, unlike my 9600gt last time, it din give me distorted screen straight away at boot.
