Bryan Singer Wants Jack the Giant Killer To Be 3D, Paramount Considering 3D Star Trek Sequel

user posted image

I’ll probably be waiting a long time to hear that Ken Loach or Joe Swanberg is looking into 3D for their next production, but it seems that stereography really has caught on with franchise-type pictures, genre films and so on. Over the last few weeks there’s been explicit discussion of an ‘Avatar effect’, a redoubled interest in the form from the studios looking, jaws dead on the floor, at the box-office receipts for Cameron’s latest.

Is this perceived effect real? It seems it will be, and I’m sure that seems to be no surprise if you think of Hollywood as cash grabbing. But is it really the money men driving the decision to go 3D? Might it not be the creatives?

Bryan Singer has reportedly requested New Line allow his next picture Jack the Giant Killer be shot in 3D. The discussion is apparently still ongoing. It’s the pen hovering over the checkbook that’s hesitating here, not the artist.

The New York Times say that their sources spoke “on condition of anonymity because of studio policy”. When it comes to Paramount, however, they are able to cite Katie Martin Kelley directly. She says that the final decision on whether or not Transformers 3 and/or Star Trek 2 will be shot in 3D had been made. Here’s the fullest statement on Trek given in the article:

Paramount executives have already begun debating whether to shoot the next film in 3-D, even if that increases the cost and production difficulty, according to one person who was briefed on the talks.

I reported yesterday that the debate over stereography for Transformers 3 was still ongoing. It seems to be that Michael Bay has already said he doesn’t like 3D and is now sticking to his guns, whether or not he’s changed his mind at all. My money is on him losing the fight and issuing some sort of back-pedal statement on his official site - and before long too.

A Tiny Little Hint About A New Star Trek Character

user posted image

It’s not concrete, and it doesn’t provide any substantial information, but hell, it has to do with the “Star Trek” sequel, which is good enough for me. In a New York Times article about iPads, a topic that I find almost as interesting as accounting seminars, there is the teeniest, tiniest little hint about a potential new character that may accompany Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise into deep space on their next adventure.

QUOTE
[Robert] Orci, meeting with the producers J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, and his fellow writer Alex Kurtzman, jump-started the discussion with an iPad slide show, showing stills from the first film, snapshots of potential locations and a photo of a suggested actress for one of the roles. On the woman’s photo, he had used his iPad to paint on a Vulcan ear.

Is this a suggestion or something more definite? Will this be a new character, like Nero in the first film, or will it introduce us to a younger version of someone we’re already familiar with? Hero or villain? Really there are more questions than answers, and like I said, there isn’t any actual substance to this news, but it is enough to get me thinking about the “Star Trek” sequel, which alone automatically generates a small degree of excitement.

Abrams and company are set to start filming next year with their eye on a June 29, 2012 release. So at least we’ll get to see “Star Trek” on the big screen again before that pesky Mayan apocalypse.

Khan Will Not Be The Villain In Star Trek Sequel

user posted image

Yesterday we reported a little hint about the potential villain in J.J. Abram’s “Star Trek” sequel. It was barely news, little more than an idea really. There have also been rumblings and speculation that Khan will make a return. Badass Digest has learned a couple more concrete things on the “Star Trek” front.

First,

QUOTE
Khan will not be the villain. You would think this would go without saying, but people keep speculating. In fact, my source says that the film won’t be focused on a traditional ‘villain’ type at all.
Second,

QUOTE
The story will focus on a classic “Trek” character. And when I say classic, I mean a character who appeared in season one of the original series, when Gene Roddenberry was in charge.

Their unnamed source went on to say,

QUOTE
It’s definitely a character that will make fans of “TOS” excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named.
When asked for more clarification the source just laughed.

So there you have it. More cryptic tidbits about the “Star Trek” sequel to feed the rumor mill and create hearsay. While this doesn’t really tell you much, before long all of these little details are going to come together and form like Voltron to give a clearer picture of what the movie may or may not be about. Until then, speculate wildly, my pretties!

Interesting

I'm currrently rewatching Star Trek TOS, and it so happens that I just finished watching Space Seed (1967) where Ricardo Montalban first took on the role of Khan in Star Trek.

It is very interesting that in the said episode, it ended with Khan being exiled to a barren planet to start anew, and he was positive about it.

And in the Second Star Trek movie, the exile took it's toll and Khan was driven to have his revenge on Captain Kirk...

Also interesting that Earth in the 1990's had a Eugenics War in which perfect man (and women) took to space to start a new colony of Perfect Men, with Khan as their leader!!

So we are the survivors of an Eugenics Wars??!! :lol

Writers Kurtzman and Orci Talk Star Trek Sequel

user posted image

In an interview with Hero Complex, prolific movie writers/TV producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci talked about their approach to the second entry in their “Star Trek” reboot, which is expected sometime in 2012 with J.J. Abrams back behind the director’s chair. Of course, Abrams isn’t officially confirmed to direct yet, but it’s expected that he will be back. Probably.

QUOTE
Alex Kurtzman: Well, we have broken the story, which is very exciting. I think one of the weird challenges that we’re facing on this one is that in many ways, with the first movie, I don’t think people knew what to expect, so when we were in the writing process, Bob and I really spent our time going to things that we loved about “Trek” and it was a very unfiltered process. It felt intimate and small. There weren’t a lot of voices other than [producer] Damon [Lindelof], J.J. and [executive producer] Bryan Burke. Now, that first movie has come up and did well and everyone wants to know what happens next. We didn’t have that pressure, exactly, on the first one. That said, part of what we have to do is listen to it all, ask a lot of questions about what people’s expectations are — and then let all of that go when we sit down to write. We need to find our way back to the same kind of vibe that we had when we wrote the first one: What do we want to see here? What moved us about “Trek”? Where can we go from where we left off?

Robert Orci: One of the big challenges is all of the characters are together now. A prequel is a pain in the butt, but one of the nice little advantages was that you get to meet the characters as you go through the story and they get to meet each other. That’s fun. We don’t that luxury of not having the entire family there together at the start of the story. So now you want the character stories to be good for everybody but also not just be there to be stories but also fit into the plot and be organic. We’re looking at a lot of the old episodes for inspiration, still. Whereas the last movie was all about breaking free from “Star Trek” and its canon, now that we can do whatever we want, we still want it to feel like good ol’ “Star Trek” even though it’s a new story.

Read the rest of their thoughts over at HC.

I have to admit, when I was watching the first “Star Trek”, I had mixed feelings. I’m by no means a Trekkie. I mean, I don’t own any Star Trek merchandise whatsoever, and in fact, the only thing I do own that has “Star Trek” on it is a couple of documentaries on the culture of Trekkies called “Trekkies”.

But it didn’t take me long to warm up to the first reboot, especially when I accepted that once they opened the whole thing with a time travel angle, everything else that followed was essentially a “parallel world” storyline. And if you’ve watched any amount of “Star Trek”, you know that parallel universes, alternate dimensions, etc are a mainstay of the show. So, approached in that regard — that this “rebooted universe” is a completely different universe, and not the “original universe” of Trek that you’re used to from all the TV shows and other movies — Abrams’ “Star Trek” is pretty good, wild entertainment.

Having said that, expect Trek back in 2012.

Paramount Has Asked J.J. Abrams to Film ‘Star Trek 2′ in 3D

user posted image

Here’s a great example of just how uncreative Hollywood can be. J.J. Abrams recently stated that he has yet to see the screenplay for Star Trek 2 and that, without seeing the screenplay, he won’t commit to directing the picture. So – as of this moment – he is not directing the film. Despite that, in a new interview with Vulture, Abrams admits Paramount has already asked him to shoot the film in 3D. That’s not to say that it will be shot in 3D, whether Abrams directs or not, just that it’s been suggested very early in the process.

A film should be the creative, collected vision of all those involved. But when studios are suggesting 3D without even knowing who the director of the film is, it certainly feels like they’re just grabbing for those extra few dollars per ticket. Read J.J’s quote about this and more after the jump.

In the interview with Vulture, Abrams admits that Paramount asked him to shoot the film in 3D and followed up by saying this:

I have nothing against 3-D in theory. But I’ve also never run to the movies because something’s in 3-D. [As for Trek], as soon as I read the script, if it says, ‘Somebody pushes a weapon toward the camera in a menacing way,’ and we think, ‘That’d be better in 3-D!’… I dunno. What do you wanna see? 2-D or 3D?

The journalist said they didn’t care. Abrams continued:

I’m a big fan of whip pans, which is very hard to do in 3-D. You know, when I was in New York fifteen years ago, and I sort of had the flu, I remember turning the TV on. There were these kids in a very dark, kind of muddy movie that was on a local channel, talking about making out. Then you cut to them walking in the forest, and somebody had a paddleball, and they were doing it right to the camera. It was like this weird, experimental Fellini movie. I was like, “What the f*** is this movie?” And it was Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3-D — without sex, violence, or 3-D! It was genius.

Like Abrams suggests, if a film is developed, written and thought of as a visual, three dimensional story, then by all means, make the movie in 3D. But it really bothers me to think that 3D isn’t being thought of as a creative choice, but a financial one. In all probability, Paramount is just assuming Abrams will direct and that’s why they asked him. But Abrams isn’t stupid. He knows 3D is popular right now. He should be the one suggesting 3D to Paramount, not the other way around. It simply doesn’t feel as organic.

Warner Brothers took the first step in honoring the viewer when it comes to 3D when they canceled the 3D release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One. But if other studios don’t follow suit and treat 3D with respect, it’s just going to ruin a whole bunch of otherwise good movies.

Do you feel that 3D is becoming less creative and more financial? And do you think Star Trek 2 should be in 3D or will you differ to Abrams, if and when he decides to direct?

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Sequel Set for 2013 … in 3D

user posted image

With all the TV shows and movies and other creative ventures that he’s dipping his grubby little fingers in, it’s any wonder J.J. Abrams has even found the time to commit to directing another “Star Trek” movie at all, much less one that won’t even be released for another 2 years.

But commit he has, and Paramount has now officially slotted the film, to be shot in 3D, for May 17, 2013. That would put the untitled “Star Trek” reboot sequel right after Marvel’s “Iron Man 3″ and Guillermo Del Toro’s sci-fi monster movie “Pacific Rim”, but would beat Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” to the big screen by a month.

The 2013 date is new, with Paramount having set a June 29, 2012 release date earlier. Apparently Abrams wasn’t ready by them. Now that he’s ready, Abrams will direct from a script by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof, with all the castmembers expected back.

Here’s hoping the 3D trend dies by 2013, though.

Alice Eve Beams Up to the Star Trek Sequel

user posted image

“Star Trek 12″, aka “Star Trek 2″, aka “J.J. Abrams’ Untitled Star Trek Sequel” — whatever you want to call it, the film has cast its first new face in the form of Alice Eve (“She’s Out of My League”).

Word is that Eve beat out fellow Brit Hayley Atwell (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Aussie Teresa Palmer (“I am Number Four”) for the cushy gig, and will be playing a new character that will be introduced into the series.

Benicio del Toro is also believed to still be up for the sequel’s unknown bad guy.

Abrams will return to direct from a script by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, with Paramount eyeing a May 17, 2013 release date for the 3D film. As per usual for an Abrams project, no one beyond the writers/producers know anything about the storyline.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana are also expected back for the second go-round.

Breaking: Is Benicio Del Toro Preparing to Play Khan in Star Trek 2?

user posted image

If so, that would be all sorts of awesome.

According to Latino Review, the “Usual Suspects” alumni will portray Khan in J.J. Abrams’ follow-up to his wildly popular “Star Trek” reboot. The aforementioned villain, of course, was portrayed by Ricardo Montalban in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”, which is really the only older “Star Trek” movie I can stomach. If anyone can bring the intensity required to make this role work, it should be Del Toro. This news is actually more rumor than fact, so expect the Hollywood machine to deny then confirm, deny then confirm several times before finally revealing the truth. Regardless of whether or not this late-night tidbit is fact or fiction, it’s still fun to pretend.

Peter Weller Beams Onto J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Sequel

Peter Weller is a certified cinematic badass, and his participation in any project automatically increases its coolness quotient by several remarkable degrees. And while little is known about who Weller will portray in upcoming feature, it’s still all sorts of awesome that he’s officially signed on to co-star in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel to his hit sci-fi reboot. Rumors started swirling this weekend that Benicio Del Toro is being courted for the role of Khan, but nothing has been confirmed as of this writing. Production is expected to begin early next year.

“Star Trek 2″ is tentatively scheduled for release on May 17th, 2013.

An Update on the Del Toro as Kahn in Star Trek 2 Rumors

user posted image

Let’s face it, getting someone like Benicio Del Toro to star in a “Trek” movie as the villain would be awesome. Del Toro chewing scenery as a Trek baddie would be so badass, it defies the very definition of badass. So yeah, people are interested, and I can’t say as I blame them.

So, is Del Toro playing Kahn in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” sequel or not? Depends on who you ask, apparently.

After reports surfaced last week that Del Toro was very much playing a villain in the untitled “Trek” sequel, and that said villain would in all likelihood be Kahn, today brings news that he might not be, after all.

On Friday, Hitfix got in touch with Abrams himself, and asked him about the Del Toro as Kahn rumors. Abrams’ response was short and sweet:

QUOTE
Not true.

Well, that was to the point.

So, Del Toro isn’t playing Kahn? But Kahn is in the movie, right? And Del Toro is in negotiations to play someone in the film? Well, he was, anyway.

Vulture now reports that an insider tells them that Del Toro was in negotiations to play someone big in the sequel, but that the deal fell throw last week due to money issues. Basically, he wanted more than they wanted to pay him. No doubt Abrams coming out and publicly saying that he wanted Del Toro in the movie probably convinced Del Toro’s peopel to jack up the price a tad.

This, according to Vulture, was on a Wednesday. Abrams’ statement to Hitfix was on a Friday of last week. Vulture still insists the villain will be Kahn, but it just won’t be played by Del Toro.
