A Tiny Little Hint About A New Star Trek Character

user posted image

It’s not concrete, and it doesn’t provide any substantial information, but hell, it has to do with the “Star Trek” sequel, which is good enough for me. In a New York Times article about iPads, a topic that I find almost as interesting as accounting seminars, there is the teeniest, tiniest little hint about a potential new character that may accompany Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise into deep space on their next adventure.

QUOTE
[Robert] Orci, meeting with the producers J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, and his fellow writer Alex Kurtzman, jump-started the discussion with an iPad slide show, showing stills from the first film, snapshots of potential locations and a photo of a suggested actress for one of the roles. On the woman’s photo, he had used his iPad to paint on a Vulcan ear.

Is this a suggestion or something more definite? Will this be a new character, like Nero in the first film, or will it introduce us to a younger version of someone we’re already familiar with? Hero or villain? Really there are more questions than answers, and like I said, there isn’t any actual substance to this news, but it is enough to get me thinking about the “Star Trek” sequel, which alone automatically generates a small degree of excitement.

Abrams and company are set to start filming next year with their eye on a June 29, 2012 release. So at least we’ll get to see “Star Trek” on the big screen again before that pesky Mayan apocalypse.

Khan Will Not Be The Villain In Star Trek Sequel

user posted image

Yesterday we reported a little hint about the potential villain in J.J. Abram’s “Star Trek” sequel. It was barely news, little more than an idea really. There have also been rumblings and speculation that Khan will make a return. Badass Digest has learned a couple more concrete things on the “Star Trek” front.

First,

QUOTE
Khan will not be the villain. You would think this would go without saying, but people keep speculating. In fact, my source says that the film won’t be focused on a traditional ‘villain’ type at all.
Second,

QUOTE
The story will focus on a classic “Trek” character. And when I say classic, I mean a character who appeared in season one of the original series, when Gene Roddenberry was in charge.

Their unnamed source went on to say,

QUOTE
It’s definitely a character that will make fans of “TOS” excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named.
When asked for more clarification the source just laughed.

So there you have it. More cryptic tidbits about the “Star Trek” sequel to feed the rumor mill and create hearsay. While this doesn’t really tell you much, before long all of these little details are going to come together and form like Voltron to give a clearer picture of what the movie may or may not be about. Until then, speculate wildly, my pretties!

Writers Kurtzman and Orci Talk Star Trek Sequel

user posted image

In an interview with Hero Complex, prolific movie writers/TV producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci talked about their approach to the second entry in their “Star Trek” reboot, which is expected sometime in 2012 with J.J. Abrams back behind the director’s chair. Of course, Abrams isn’t officially confirmed to direct yet, but it’s expected that he will be back. Probably.

QUOTE
Alex Kurtzman: Well, we have broken the story, which is very exciting. I think one of the weird challenges that we’re facing on this one is that in many ways, with the first movie, I don’t think people knew what to expect, so when we were in the writing process, Bob and I really spent our time going to things that we loved about “Trek” and it was a very unfiltered process. It felt intimate and small. There weren’t a lot of voices other than [producer] Damon [Lindelof], J.J. and [executive producer] Bryan Burke. Now, that first movie has come up and did well and everyone wants to know what happens next. We didn’t have that pressure, exactly, on the first one. That said, part of what we have to do is listen to it all, ask a lot of questions about what people’s expectations are — and then let all of that go when we sit down to write. We need to find our way back to the same kind of vibe that we had when we wrote the first one: What do we want to see here? What moved us about “Trek”? Where can we go from where we left off?

Robert Orci: One of the big challenges is all of the characters are together now. A prequel is a pain in the butt, but one of the nice little advantages was that you get to meet the characters as you go through the story and they get to meet each other. That’s fun. We don’t that luxury of not having the entire family there together at the start of the story. So now you want the character stories to be good for everybody but also not just be there to be stories but also fit into the plot and be organic. We’re looking at a lot of the old episodes for inspiration, still. Whereas the last movie was all about breaking free from “Star Trek” and its canon, now that we can do whatever we want, we still want it to feel like good ol’ “Star Trek” even though it’s a new story.

Read the rest of their thoughts over at HC.

I have to admit, when I was watching the first “Star Trek”, I had mixed feelings. I’m by no means a Trekkie. I mean, I don’t own any Star Trek merchandise whatsoever, and in fact, the only thing I do own that has “Star Trek” on it is a couple of documentaries on the culture of Trekkies called “Trekkies”.

But it didn’t take me long to warm up to the first reboot, especially when I accepted that once they opened the whole thing with a time travel angle, everything else that followed was essentially a “parallel world” storyline. And if you’ve watched any amount of “Star Trek”, you know that parallel universes, alternate dimensions, etc are a mainstay of the show. So, approached in that regard — that this “rebooted universe” is a completely different universe, and not the “original universe” of Trek that you’re used to from all the TV shows and other movies — Abrams’ “Star Trek” is pretty good, wild entertainment.

Having said that, expect Trek back in 2012.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Sequel Set for 2013 … in 3D

user posted image

With all the TV shows and movies and other creative ventures that he’s dipping his grubby little fingers in, it’s any wonder J.J. Abrams has even found the time to commit to directing another “Star Trek” movie at all, much less one that won’t even be released for another 2 years.

But commit he has, and Paramount has now officially slotted the film, to be shot in 3D, for May 17, 2013. That would put the untitled “Star Trek” reboot sequel right after Marvel’s “Iron Man 3″ and Guillermo Del Toro’s sci-fi monster movie “Pacific Rim”, but would beat Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” to the big screen by a month.

The 2013 date is new, with Paramount having set a June 29, 2012 release date earlier. Apparently Abrams wasn’t ready by them. Now that he’s ready, Abrams will direct from a script by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof, with all the castmembers expected back.

Here’s hoping the 3D trend dies by 2013, though.

Alice Eve Beams Up to the Star Trek Sequel

user posted image

“Star Trek 12″, aka “Star Trek 2″, aka “J.J. Abrams’ Untitled Star Trek Sequel” — whatever you want to call it, the film has cast its first new face in the form of Alice Eve (“She’s Out of My League”).

Word is that Eve beat out fellow Brit Hayley Atwell (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Aussie Teresa Palmer (“I am Number Four”) for the cushy gig, and will be playing a new character that will be introduced into the series.

Benicio del Toro is also believed to still be up for the sequel’s unknown bad guy.

Abrams will return to direct from a script by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, with Paramount eyeing a May 17, 2013 release date for the 3D film. As per usual for an Abrams project, no one beyond the writers/producers know anything about the storyline.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana are also expected back for the second go-round.

Breaking: Is Benicio Del Toro Preparing to Play Khan in Star Trek 2?

user posted image

If so, that would be all sorts of awesome.

According to Latino Review, the “Usual Suspects” alumni will portray Khan in J.J. Abrams’ follow-up to his wildly popular “Star Trek” reboot. The aforementioned villain, of course, was portrayed by Ricardo Montalban in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”, which is really the only older “Star Trek” movie I can stomach. If anyone can bring the intensity required to make this role work, it should be Del Toro. This news is actually more rumor than fact, so expect the Hollywood machine to deny then confirm, deny then confirm several times before finally revealing the truth. Regardless of whether or not this late-night tidbit is fact or fiction, it’s still fun to pretend.

Peter Weller Beams Onto J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Sequel

user posted image

Peter Weller is a certified cinematic badass, and his participation in any project automatically increases its coolness quotient by several remarkable degrees. And while little is known about who Weller will portray in upcoming feature, it’s still all sorts of awesome that he’s officially signed on to co-star in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel to his hit sci-fi reboot. Rumors started swirling this weekend that Benicio Del Toro is being courted for the role of Khan, but nothing has been confirmed as of this writing. Production is expected to begin early next year.

“Star Trek 2″ is tentatively scheduled for release on May 17th, 2013.

An Update on the Del Toro as Kahn in Star Trek 2 Rumors

user posted image

Let’s face it, getting someone like Benicio Del Toro to star in a “Trek” movie as the villain would be awesome. Del Toro chewing scenery as a Trek baddie would be so badass, it defies the very definition of badass. So yeah, people are interested, and I can’t say as I blame them.

So, is Del Toro playing Kahn in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” sequel or not? Depends on who you ask, apparently.

After reports surfaced last week that Del Toro was very much playing a villain in the untitled “Trek” sequel, and that said villain would in all likelihood be Kahn, today brings news that he might not be, after all.

On Friday, Hitfix got in touch with Abrams himself, and asked him about the Del Toro as Kahn rumors. Abrams’ response was short and sweet:

QUOTE
Not true.

Well, that was to the point.

So, Del Toro isn’t playing Kahn? But Kahn is in the movie, right? And Del Toro is in negotiations to play someone in the film? Well, he was, anyway.

Vulture now reports that an insider tells them that Del Toro was in negotiations to play someone big in the sequel, but that the deal fell throw last week due to money issues. Basically, he wanted more than they wanted to pay him. No doubt Abrams coming out and publicly saying that he wanted Del Toro in the movie probably convinced Del Toro’s peopel to jack up the price a tad.

This, according to Vulture, was on a Wednesday. Abrams’ statement to Hitfix was on a Friday of last week. Vulture still insists the villain will be Kahn, but it just won’t be played by Del Toro.

Your Latest Khan Candidates are Edgar Ramirez and Jordi Molla

user posted image

Now that Benicio Del Toro has failed to reach a deal with Paramount and J.J. Abrams, the director is searching for a replacement villain, with “Carlos’s” Edgar Ramirez (below) and “Colombiana’s” Jordi Molla (left) in the mix, though Ramirez is said to be the frontrunner for the role.

Apparently finding the right actor to play the sequel’s villain is now a matter of some urgency, with production on Abrams’ untitled “Star Trek” film scheduled to start up in January for what is expected to be a whopping 6-month shoot. It’s urgent enough that Ramirez is said to be prepping for an audition via Skype sometime this week, which is, I have to say, a new one for me. Can you really tell if someone can act through Skype?

While no one is revealing who the two actors are testing for, let’s face it, it’s Khan. Isn’t it obvious by now? What does Del Toro, Ramirez, and Molla have in common? They’re all of Latin descent, just like Ricardo Montalban, who played the original Khan in 1982′s “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”. So if the villain isn’t Khan, then that’s one hell of a coincidence.

A decision, we’re told, should be made by the end of the month, possibly even this weekend.

Bullshit. The other thing they have in common is a darker Mediterranean complexion, which could also mean they're playing a Klingon.

Hairy, didn't I tell you to stop getting you info from Beyond Hollywood?

Well, most of the time they get the news from other sources. Most of the time they do provide some good info. Maybe I just read the article before posting. Better to move the thread than not moving at all...

Besides - its their own opinion and what they think. True or not can be use to debate...

Abrams: Star Trek 2 Will be Shot in 2D and Converted to 3D

user posted image

Good to know that even Mr. Secret Agent Man J.J. Abrams isn’t above trying to squeeze a few extra bucks out of you by converting his films into 3D and charging a little bit more. Talking to MTV, Abrams has confirmed that he will begun shooting the untitled “Star Trek” sequel sometime next month in 2012, with sets for the film still in the process of being built, and that the movie will be shot in 2D and then converted in post to 3D.

Says Abrams:

QUOTE
We’re shooting on film, 2-D, and then we’ll do a good high-end conversion like the ‘Harry Potter’ movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good.

He also says they’re talking about shooting the film in IMAX, but that seems like a non-starter if he can’t even shoot the movie in 3D in the first place.

By the way, Abrams still refuses to acknowledge that Khan is the sequel’s villain, which seems a bit silly at this point. He doesn’t deny it, he just doesn’t confirm it. But not denying it basically confirms it, since if Khan wasn’t in the movie, he could easily dismiss it and move on. But he doesn’t, so … yes, Khan will be the film’s villain.

Two Brits Land Major Roles in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Sequel

user posted image

The “Trek” sequel is getting mighty British of late. Previously, British lovely Alice Eve was cast in the movie, and now she can add two of her fellow countrymen “castmembers”.

British actors Benedict Cumberbatch (with a name like that, you just KNOW he has to be British) and writer/director/actor Noel Clarke have both landed undisclosed roles in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming “Star Trek” sequel.

Clarke is said to be playing “a family man with a wife and young daughter.” Well, that beats playing a single guy with no wife and young daughter, I guess.

Meanwhile, Cumberbatch is said to be playing the film’s villain. In fact, Cumberbatch’s villain is said to be the same role that Edgar Ramirez recently auditioned for. Which is weird, because I think most people always assumed Ramirez was auditioning to replace Benicio Del Toro as Khan, who has long been rumored to be the sequel’s chief villain. But Cumberbatch sure doesn’t look very “Khan”-ish. I mean, make-up can only do so much, right? (That’s Cumberbatch to the right of the pic below, by the way).

In any case, Clarke is best known to British movie watchers as an actor, as well as the writer/director of “4.3.2.1″ and “Kidulthood”. Cumberbatch, of course, is famous for playing Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s rebooted “Sherlock” TV series, currently in its second season. Or, er, series, as they call it Across the Pond. He was also recently in Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse”. And no, he was not the horse.

Abrams’ untitled “Star Trek” sequel, meanwhile, is scheduled to go into warp May 17, 2013.

First set photos from the ‘Star Trek’ sequel

user posted image

"Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Spock"?

The first photos from the set of the sequel to 2009's "Star Trek" have leaked, and from what we can see it looks like it will be just as action-packed as its predecessor.  What's more, the shots give us the first look at the villain from the film currently in production.

The photos show Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana returning to the roles of Spock and Uhura, along with new cast member Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays their still-unnamed adversary.  The actors were photographed while they rehearsed and shot a fight scene on a large exterior set in front of a green screen (the background will be added in later digitally).

Benedict Cumberbatch is a British actor who broke out playing the lead role in "Sherlock," the BBC's modern-day Sherlock Holmes series.  In 2011, he appeared in two critically acclaimed films: "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" opposite Gary Oldman, and Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated "War Horse."  It had originally been announced that Benicio del Toro would be the bad guy in the new "Star Trek," but after he dropped out of the project Cumberbatch was cast in his place.

Little is known about the character Cumberbatch will play, but we can gather some clues from the photos.  He appears to be wearing a black Starfleet shirt like Kirk wore in the first movie before he was made an officer.  He's apparently strong enough to tussle with Spock, but his rounded ears would indicate he's not a Vulcan.  And it looks like he made Uhura mad enough to blast him with her phaser (presumably set to stun, not to kill).

Director J.J. Abrams and the cast from the last movie are all returning for the next installment, but it will not beam into theaters until May of 2013.
