Calling all USM students! Please introduce yourself by stating your campus, course, academic year, hostel/dorm, what's hot and what's not!

 RST Hostels Complex which is located on a small hill outside the main campus walls across one busy street. (R = Restu, S = Saujana, T = Tekun)  View of the busy street from the flyover that links RST with the main campus.  The road that leads to one of USM's 3 entrances/exits, with RST in the background.  View of RST from Palapes (where RST students wait for their buses to fetch them).  Shady lane with the Dewan Budaya on the left.  Pusat Bahasa & Terjemahan, where you guys attend your compulsory English/BM courses as well as foreign languages (with a choice of Chinese, Tamil, Thai, Korean, Japanese, French, Spanish, German, Arabic).  The drum of School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP), the most unique building of the faculty. Taken during the 20th Architectural Workshop which just ended last week.  The Padang Kelapa hill slope beside HBP.  Views of Penang's multi-million dollar twin-towers condominium and the Penang Bridge from Padang Kelapa. Supposedly the best view you can get in all of USM. Bring some books to read instead though you'll most probably end up being exhausted after one whole day of talks, seminars and walking. Ah yes, you'll need to walk a lot! Depending on your locale, walking under the hot sun is torturing, esp when you're clad in a formal dress! You are advised to bring an umbrella or sun protection gears as well as a pair of comfortable shoe for that. Bring an extra pair of sandals to be used in bathrooms too. Also, do bring a few pairs of sports wear too as there'll be an aerobics/team-cheering event being held at the Minden Field. BTW, don't forget your original certs and their photocopies! i just get usm offer letter "management"

No tortures, no pranks etc. Just talks, walks, talks, walks. You get the drift. I have a friend who've managed to switch to Architecture and will be joining the new batch this coming July. FYI, she gets a CGPA of 3.65 and 3.67 respectively in the 2 semesters of her 1st year. Getting the Dean List (CGPA 3.5 and above) is applaudable, but in HBP, it's quite tough to get 3.6 and above especially for Design students (Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Planning) due to the strict markings on studio works. So getting 3.6 and above is quite a feat actually. Haha... I just finish my studies from USM main campus. Stayed in Restu for the past 3 yrs and I am continueing my Masters in USM as well. I am from School of Humanities. Got my student exchnge prog in 1st year but didnt go coz i didnt wanna extend.

whats the 1st year HBP course like? Hectic or relax? What will we mostly be doing?
I was wondering.. Do we need to wait for the official letter to come then send them back the lampiran A or can just send the one printed online? I guess it's safer to send them ourselves first, through Pos Laju or other courier services.

Medical checkups will be conducted in USM. You guys will be doing this in USM's clinic. ATTENTION TO ALL PTPTN NEW APPLICANTS! Make sure EACH PRINTED PAGE bears the PTPTN logo watermark (must be in blue), else they won't accept it. There may be certain pages which do not bear the watermark. So what we did last yr was to get a blank piece of paper and print out the watermark first (there are certain pages with only the watermark and no words in the PTPTN acrobat document) and then print the page that you want on that paper. Get those related documents signed and verified in BLACK-INKED BALLPOINTS. Those who have no printing service at home, you can do that in USM but with a hefty charge applied (1 page = RM0.10). Most of them linger around Indah Kembara. You can go to USM Clinic to request for ointments to rub on the insect bites. Don't worry, it's free. |

are aman damai rooms assigned for two ppl or will there be one person? my bro's gf used to stay there she said there's three beds but only two ppl staying. and it's super hot because there's only one small, tiny fan. if i get the lower bunk for the double decker bed it's even hotter.
that's 3 years ago, wondering if it's refurbished in these few years... she loves scaring me >.< |

i called up the USM unit kemasukan and told them that its already the 23rd and i've yet to receive the offer letter. so they told me that its not really important to mail it back to them before the 26th. she told me IF i havent received it before the 26th, i can just print out the documents in the pdf file and fill it up, then pass it up to them on the 29th during registration, no worries about mailing it back to them before the 26th. and about the fees, i called up the finance division to get the amount needed to pay. the one shown in the online offer letter is incorrect, according to what the finance officer told me

paid today... have to write separate forms for hostel isit? the teller asked me to write in another form 300+ and cancelled the amount on the original form i've written to a smaller amount but when add both is the total amount i'm supposed to pay

Don't know what to do now , maybe later i going to call usm and ask for their help .... actually about the medical checkup i alrdy done it before , yesterday i go see my doctor , she told me that if can avoid then avoid from doing it again. lol by the way those who alrdy paid for the bil can tell me how ? issit u just go to bank islam malaysia then tell them u wan to pay for usm bill and they will giv u the draft ? i went to the bank and told the security guard (who is taking care of the forms) that i wan to pay to usm. then he gave me the slip pembayaran bil which looks exactly like the one in the hand book.
but my slip is not the colourful one. all white... i asked bout the cd. they say they'll only give them to us during the orientation... |

ATTENTION TO ALL PTPTN NEW APPLICANTS! Make sure EACH PRINTED PAGE bears the PTPTN logo watermark (must be in blue), else they won't accept it. There may be certain pages which do not bear the watermark. So what we did last yr was to get a blank piece of paper and print out the watermark first (there are certain pages with only the watermark and no words in the PTPTN acrobat document) and then print the page that you want on that paper. Get those related documents signed and verified in BLACK-INKED BALLPOINTS. Those who have no printing service at home, you can do that in USM but with a hefty charge applied (1 page = RM0.10).

the Lampiran A....only main campus ppl can send in by hand...oth campus need to mail it to penang...n it takes THREE days for it to reach USM from Kuching...my mail would reach Penang on 27th but I called and the guy said it's ok as long as it reach penang...it costed me RM 19.40 cos i use courier... just now i call the perkhidmatan bank at usm ( finally i manage to call them zzz) i told them that i alrdy apply and account and i alrdy get the ptptn loan and the loan will going to go in to my account that i alrdy apply since i put it my account number at tat time . So she told me that just bring your ptptn document and your bank account statment to there and they will fix for me...

i feel the guards at the gate near the hostels are stricter cos the probability of students driving in is higher. The sungai dua gate is quite strict too cos i've seen many times the guards stopped cars without stickers and all the cars with stickers had queue up behind. haha. i wonder why they don't use the space at the side to talk to the drivers

yes u need to attend lecture first day but usually those lazy lecturers will come in and give intro 10 mins and run off or they will cancel the class

Ok..i got science computing and going for it...and now i got tons of question.I had read all the post starting from post 1..some did clear my mind,but i still got questions especially those regarding fees and moneys
There r different amount of money for the course,1 in the offer letter while another 1 in Lampiran E dan E1...the offer letter states tat the fees given by the gov will be 9k+ while the student hav to pay 1k+ per year. So the question is,the 9k thing is not the ptptn loan right?If it's NO,then the ptptn loan would be helping us to pay the 1k+ right? Meanwhile,in the Lampiran E and E1...the fees amount is stated different.The course is around 5k..plus all those Yuran Tak Berulang..total up 7k per semester...how long is 1 semester?1 year? Do i hav to pay all 7k or juz like the offer letter stated,only 1k+ BEFORE or DURING the orientation week? How do i pay?Bank Islam? I read a post in this tread tat USM will open an account in Bank Islam for us..so we dont need to open ourselves.Please confirm this. As for PTPTN...will they giv me a sum of money to pay for the 7k for the 1st semester?I'll be facing some trouble if i hav to pay all 7k in 1 time... Oh yea,about the hostel..can we stay for 4 years? i got Industrial Tech (Environmental) like what i applied. i undergo my practical (Diploma) there and i hope it will help a lot. my last semester result not come out yet, so i dont have exam slip for semester 6 to enclose with Lampiran A1.
u think they still accept me or not? but surely the result will come out b4 i register there. My MUET result oso not come out yet Added on June 2, 2009, 10:57 amDuckies, i will register same day with u If im not mistaken, At the surat tawaran, they just stated amount that supported by gov for 1 year (2 sem) what we have to pay is in Lampiran E - warganegara not E1 - warga asing ( i think u re looking at this type of fees) In the excel doc, there is two tab which is E and E1. u have to click at E tab like what i see in the table, you have to pay RM 1350.00 for yuran pengajian, which is RM 740.00 Yuran Berulang (u have to pay each sem) and RM 610.00 Yuran Tak Berulang (u have to pay once). this is not include yuran for hostel. i think for hostel, they will tell us which hostel will be given. they will pos the surat tawaran right. im oso not sure about this. from the panduan, they told us that we have to pay before we register through Bank Islam. then we have to know which hostel we will get. from what my sis said (she is study in USM b4), first sem we cannot choose our room, but the next sem is up to us. and classes will start right away after the orientation. anyone, please correct me if im wrong. To apply the loan, we need to do it ourselves on the stated date. (see url below). PTPTN or Uni wont do it for us.
http://www.ptptn.gov.my/web/guest/anjung/penting According to Lampiran G, after the loan successful, we need to print out agreement stuff and doc that they ask and send it to PTPTN officer in HEPP (they will tell us when to send). even though we buy the num pin at BSN, we need to open BIMB personal account so that PTPTN can transfer the money into our acc. BIMB is the panel Bank for USM (refer to page 2). before applying, we need to have SSPN acc and BIMB acc. We need to prepare all the doc needed, so that when our loan successful, we no need to kelam kabut. |

i heard today news and found out that the ministry of education advices USM to give the list of accepted student to UPU... because many complaining their 1st choice is in UPU and not USM.. and they were scared if reject USM,they will not get UPU...in dilemma! so if u are applying for both USM and UPU............ the dont give book anymo.book only for ppl that cannot do transaction via atm, expecially old ppl.they just give an account slip (where there is ur name and acc num printed) and also an atm card. photostat that slip only

after u apply for ptptn..

i have few questions regarding dentistry. Can any one clarify the difference with Doctor of Dental Surgery with Bachelor of Dental Surgery? BDS / DDS ? confused? USM Dentistry after graduate have to do housemanship for 3 years isn't? if manage to get JPA means how long need to do service with government?(for RM1800 x 5) or for total fee before subsidized by government? |

Yea scopiongurl called USM and confirmed no need to send Lampiran A and A1 if u sent them before.But juz in case i am going to send it again..few stamps wont cost much and doesnt hurt..

Added on June 15, 2009, 11:57 amanyone knows more about the payment plz post it here. thx! .. i had phoned to USM to ask about it a few moments ago...and oni did i realise that actually the yuran desasiswa has not been added up inside the total fees of payment...but when we are going to pay through bank or on9, USM has included in the fees for hostel, that is RM320....so we actually have to add up another RM320 in our JUMLAH BESAR...the officer also said tat we can choose either to pay for yuran tak berulang first then pay the yuran berulang(including yuran desasiswa) on the day we register, or we can pay for both (yuran tak berulang n yuran berulang) before the day we register in usm. To simplify, we have to pay for something first before the registration day through bank or on9...haha...then i asked about which type of room we r going to get for RM320...he said tat is four per room !oops...tats alot for me ...haha...if wanna change we may do it after the orientation week...but the percentage to be successful in changing is not high as the most of the rooms for lesser people are reserved for the seniors..but still have to give it a try,rite?? hehe...Thats all i get...hope i dun share the wrong info v u all..hahaha....n also hope u guys get something out of here ya! To visioz : o~ ic ic....is true of wat u said..but if accept JPA, wat i heard is tat doctors r bound to be bonded to JPA for 10 years !! haha...u can imagine after 10 years working v the government........................................for other courses, u may not be bonded depending on the demand of our country towards the particular job...haha...so wat did u accept?? JPA or PTPTN?? To kayal :Based on the panduan siswa, yuran berulang is RM900++ ...yuran TAK berulang is RM 600++...if adding up both gives u RM 1500++ ....not forgetting the yuran desasiswa i mentioned previously about RM300++(if the officer mentioned correctly to me) i tink the amount is around RM1800++...i hope is clear for u ....haha.... |

depend on ur la... im taking JPA coz now engineering coz is quite challenging... many colleague offer engineering course now... in ur case, better u take it if u cant afford 2 pay d yuran but if u can, better u decline d offer... sum more, medic is quite hot like a pancake rite now 2 get job... so take ur time thinking bout it |

For us in engineering, classes aren't too far away but still a bit tiring if your walking. Some people here use bikes. (I'm planning on using rollerblades. ) |

Btw,anyone taking Science Computing as me?Looks like not much ppl having the same course as me..and i got Restu as my desasiswa..looks quite good but very expensive...500-600 depending how many ppl staying in 1 room.Anyway who's going to determine how many ppl per room?And i gotta wake up very early..around 4 am on 27th as i live in Ipoh..gotta go earlier.. |

i lived in restu for all 3 years. a good place just bit far from everything.
But you will have nice foods and no worry about groceries. We have a tiny shop selling all sort of things. btw, rst canteen also have atm which is very handy to students at there. welcome to usm and do tell me where you are so i can throw you into lake as orientation week activity. just kidding, usm dont do this kind of things. |

but your school is the best in msia. won the microsoft competition almost every year. so be very happy if you really like computer science. i am still studying.few years senior than you lo. aiya, don worry la. ipoh people lots like hell. you hear got ppl speak cantonese got 70% ipoh ppl. 30% from other area. Added on June 16, 2009, 5:28 pmhuh. main campus cannot stay 4 ppl la. most of them are 2 ppl per room. engineering campus normal room is 4 ppl and the room size is more than enough. dont worry. I'll try to ask my friends later k. my class...i dont know.. apparently i checked with the tawaran kursus and see if they offer professional malay for this intake and it seems like the course is there. @_@ but not the literasi one. for my course... they don't state it there if u look carefully. they only state the pusat pengajian. so if they do take profesional BM for this intake.. if u think logically.. 20 people.. and take 10 people in one course..hahaha i have a feeling there might only be 10 people as my coursemates in USM. XD *faints* |

Erm..., I didn't ask my lecturer for my koku marks in Matriculation, so I didn't know my marks. How did you get to know yours? ^Happy Garfield^@91, same... nuraini, By the way, we can/must pay part/whole of our yuran (Etc. only the Yuran Tidak Berulang) before we go for registration right? |

fajar harapan doesnt need to take any bus at all! except you are going to pusat bahasa la. you all have to tell me your course and your future 1 year hostel. then i can tell you your energy+time wasted for the next 1 year. Added on June 17, 2009, 4:01 pmforgot to mention the suicide case. happen back around 2002 batch i think. suicide cause din get medic. got chemistry instead. =.= dono after chemistry can apply to US study doctor one meh? If you kena pusat bahasa then congratz la. far far away. walk till your shirt soaked in sweats. if dk, soooo near to fajar harapan. kena sk same like your school nia. sk is bigger dewan opposite your school. climb hill also but not that far. to Duckies no matter wat couse kena restu mean everyday wake up 1-2 hour before class liao la. if kena 9am 10am class, lagi congratz. the sardin packed inside bus will be a normal sight for you later on. GO BUY A BIKE ASAP! |

forget about car. usm is VERY strict with this issue.
sticker is usually issued to final year students or VERY VERY VERY active students. If you don't have sticker, want go in the gate kena stop, ask this ask that. if cannot then kicked out. if so lucky they din stop you. you go in, got other road block. kena saman again. let say whole road no guard. u park your car. kena saman again. every saman rm30. din pay cannot grad. do your math then. on the other hand, motorbike much easier. usually you can just evade all the roadblock etc. motor no saman and easier to get sticker. im not staying in the hostel for long. maybe just during the orientation. my house is only in gelugor. got exemption frm the dean. i'll ask them about the transport... or if its too hard.. i'll just park at sungai 2 and walk in.. ahhaha |

9am class you have to wake up at 7~730am lo. motobike also cannot one. but they not strict with motobike at all. only cars they very pantang. |

oh btw. orientation week you CANNOT go out from USM AT ALL!
they even control the people from coming into usm. so live with it. anyway, sg2 gate there near the mosque It is actually public parking. So if you dont have sticker. jus tell them you will park at the public parking. (which is already inside usm) so there is no need parking outside usm even you dont have sticker. just have to WALK la! |
