More LYNers going to UMS, and moreover all are SKTM (Sekolah Kejuruteraan dan Teknologi Maklumat) students. Don't forget your Form 6 Maths T stuff.
Final year student here, but will not be there for "orientation" week. |

QUOTE(endrylim @ Jun 19 2008, 03:43 AM) I don't think its required anymore. And yes, W. Malaysians used to need passports to enter Sabah/Sarawak up to a few years ago. I think W. Msians still need a work permit to work there though. And yes, you can identify a Sabahan from his/her IC, there is a 'H' at the bottom right corner. Not sure what Sarawakians have but yea... |

hey !
Surat Tawaran comes out d in website ! Me, Kolej B . and i will book AirAsia Tickets at 9.30am at Saturday. According to what my seniors told me, the hostel we stay during orientation week(1st week) is not the permanent place we stay, there just simply arranged according to ur birthday date. Any perspective UMSian who birthday date is around 9 Oct 11988 ? *in UMS, 4 persons share a room ... With no internert service (majority kolej, except Kolej E, congratulation to those who get kolej E) i believe that most of perspective UMSian will go to UMS at saturday since the registration of accomodation college is on saturday, why not we all wait at KLIA LCTT and bersama pergi UMS ? |

QUOTE(HolyJudgement @ Jun 19 2008, 09:35 AM) I think so. Though you might want to find out from someone else for sure. I'm a Sabahan myself, but my mom isn't and I remembered her always having line up at a separate queue at the immigration with a passport during our trips back to W.Msia when I was kid. But things may have changed since I moved to the Klang Valley six years ago. |

MyKad is enough to enter Sabah. In the future, you will be using your student card so you don't need to worry about the 3 month stay limit.
Here is what I wrote for last year's new students: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=12192470 Nothing new to update except there is now 1 Borneo nearby UMS (beside UMS actually, but not exactly walking distance either). |

There's no kolej kediaman written on my Surat Tawaran. It just says Sila Rujuk Hal Ehwal Pelajar (HEP). Does it means that I have to refer from HEP when I reach there? |

You can go there by 28th or 29th, any will do. They will definitely provide a place for you to stay at 28th but before that I can't guarantee. Another option for accommodation is Tune Hotel at 1borneo which is next to UMS and the price is around RM50 per night only. On 28th onwards, they will provide transportation at the airport; UMS will set up a booth at the airport so just sign up there and the seniors will guide you. About laptop, I will suggest you to buy after the orientation or wait till the PC fair in mid July for better offer and etc. Hope this helps. You need to open a bank account at CIMB bank in order to apply PTPTN. They will deposit money to that account every sem once you got it. Plus, you'll need to pay your hostel and course fee through CIMB bank. You'll also receive RM1.5K as wang pendahuluan if I am not mistaken. You can either use it or leave it as it is but PTPTN will deduct it from your acc in other sem. Maybank is a good choice since most of the ATM machine in UMS, especially in Residential College E (Kampung E) is Maybank. UMS has CIMB bank in the campus but not Maybank. You'll have to go to the city for Maybank which is more difficult if you are not from KK. My suggestion is to open acc at both banks. CIMB for Uni usage such as course fee, loan, etc while Maybank for personal expense and savings. This post has been edited by lwsn: Jun 19 2008, 02:58 PM |

A guide from our senior..
Thanks to him. Below is the guide and advice from one of our senior which is posted at last year, hope can help u all (include me as well ! ) Guide to first year students going to UMS. For those who have not gotten their surat tawaran. Do not worry. I have not received mine either after so long (go complain to Pos Malaysia). Haha. You can just go there and ask them to print it out for you. Or, just print the online version of the surat tawaran, it is as good as the original. Personally, there is no need for a medical checkup either. In the event that they really need it this year, just do it in the medical clinics nearby. When you arrived at the airport, there are MSM (Minggu Suai Mesra) seniors that will assist you at the airport. It is around 20 to 45 minutes drive from the airport. Taxis normally charge RM30 (give or take RM5). Orientation is not so bad. They make you stand and sit and stand and sit and stand and sit and stand and sit... Wake up at 4am (kuliah Islam for Muslims and kuliah Moral for non-Muslims) Personally speaking, you can just ponteng it and run padang one round the next day. Even so, try your best to attend it. Sometimes talk until late at night, then ask you to walk back to your own hostel (10-20 minutes walk depending on your hostel). You will see hundreds of them marching their heavy heads back to their rooms at 1am to 2am. During orientation week, you can "curi-curi" change room, because the room given during to you during orientation week is not permanent (but still 80% chance you will remain in the same kampung). After your rooms are fixed, cannot change already. Do not worry too much either, they tend to fix students of the same race together (though not all the time) Bring two sets of formal wear (guys and girls alike) They provided the batiks for previous years. (someone mentioned about an umbrella a few pages back, they do provide during my year, but broken already ,buy it there as you will not need to pack an extra umbrella for rainy days) About packing, do not need to overpack. (15kg luggage check in for AirAsia and 20kg for MAS, RM12 for every extra kilogram if I am not mistaken, pack light and buy it there if you cannot bring it) Clothes, toiletries, laptop (for those who do bring, please be careful even though it is quite safe) Do bring a pair of walking shoes as there are most of the time walking involved (from library to lecture halls, to faculties, etc) Documents for those who do not intend to apply for PTPTN are IC, birth certificate (not sure), passport size photo (bring 5 or more for library, registration, medical card, etc), result slip. Those who intend to apply PTPTN need to bring parents IC, their income tax form (borang J I think), and the offer letter to UMS. Verify all documents in your school around 5 copies each is more than enough I think. No pillow or blanket or bedsheet is provided. Bring your own unless you do not use it. Bedsheet is a "must" since the mattress seems like 5 years old mattress that looks very dirty. For those who got courses that they do not want, you can apply with to change course (need approval from dean of the current faculty that you got and the dean of the faculty that you want to apply to). There are quite a few successful cases so do not give up hope. Those who intend to change university, that is a whole new story and it is usually harder. As some had said, formal wear is during Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (or some three days that I have forgotten, since I never followed even on day 1 itself). Other days can wear casual, but must have collar. For girls, skirt or pants must reach below the knee. Wear proper socks and shoes, no excessive accessories/jewellery. If I remember correctly, even jeans, round collar, cargo pants, low cut, slippers, etc (basic school rules) is against the rules. The same goes for hair, dying it slightly is still acceptable, but those with very obvious unnatural hair colour and untidy hair (long, spiky, etc basic school rules again) will normally be caught. Usually the administration do not care, but we did had a check on all the students once in a while (saman RM10 or student card confiscated or both). Student card (which doubles as a library card that is issued around the second week of lectures) enables you to stay in East Malaysia for more than three months without going to the immigration to renew your stay. Do not lose it. About finances, you do not need to pay the entire course fee immediately. I forgot to pay mine and paid almost at end of the semester. But do pay or you will not be able to get your results. You pay when registering as a university student or at OneStop Center/Canselori (a place you will visit often if you have to change your subjects, payments, etc administration affairs) There is a CIMB bank with 2 ATM machines for those who does not have an account yet. There is also a new Maybank ATM machine (not bank) at Kampung E that just started at the end of last semester. Do bring at least RM2000 for fees and various other expenditures. There are seven hostels (called kampungs) in UMS. Five of them in the campus and two of them out of campus. A, B, C, D, E are those that are in campus with E being the newest and the best (hope you get a place there, it has not only the better cafeteria, but also a small cyber cafe for web surfing and a mini sundries shop). The other two are Kingfisher (KF) and Indah Permai (IP). (There are rumours that KF is closing down this semester or very soon in the near future, but these rumours have been there every year) An additional information, if I am not mistaken, you are not compulsory to stay in campus even for the first semester. (I know I did not) You can apply for non-resident status and be waived of the hostel fees. Areas to stay outside of campus are Kingfisher and Indah Permai. Rental goes from RM60 to RM450 depending on the area and the room (take RM150 for single room, RM300 for a double room and RM450 for a master bedroom for an average estimate) To those students whose campus is in Labuan or Sandakan and a fourth campus (I forgot where but it is building up soon, correct me if I am wrong), you still need to go to the Kota Kinabalu campus for orientation week. After that, you will be ferried over to Labuan (around 5am to 6am the next day after orientation week). Courses are mainly conducted in English though mixed with Malay sometimes if the students do not understand, also lecturer dependent (except for those non-core courses like Hubungan Etnik and Tamadun Islam dan Tamadun Asia which are taught in Malay and compulsory to take). Everyone is required to take language for four semesters (two years) as well. If you get band 3 and below for your MUET, you are going to face English for the next two years again. For the rest, you have an option to choose from Japanese, French, Tamil, Mandarin, Kadazan (Spanish was offered during the second semester). You cannot take your own mother tongue language. Japanese and French are the more popular courses for Chinese while Mandarin is popular among the Indians and Malays. Although, Kadazan is an option to consider as they say it is easy to pass and is sort of close to Malay. There are other PPIB (Pusat Penataran Ilmu dan Bahasa) courses where you are required to take as well. Everyone is also compulsory to take a co-curricular subject during the weekend (list available in prospectus book provided during registration). There are two uniformed bodies (PALAPES - Pasukan Latihan Pegawai Simpanan and SUKSIS - Voluntary Police Corp) which actually pays you and gives you an allowance of like RM3.50 per hour or something (average of RM1500 per year). These two unique uniformed bodies needs a minimum participation of 3 years and is mainly filled with Malays. In my opinion, just skip it and choose the regular activites that only require one semester unless you are in need of money and like training under a uniformed body. Those who choose to undergo these uniformed bodies can choose to become a corporal (correct me if I am wrong) after you graduated. Everyone is compulsory to take ODEC (Outdoor Development Center) to graduate with exemptions given to PALAPES AND SUKSIS people. It is some sort of mini NS where you spend a day during the weekend doing four activities (rakit out in the sea, flying fox, jungle trekking, and high rope for my year). You can do it anytime during your course, though they have limited seats (once again, register early). Do check it in the Pusat KoKum in the Chancelor's Hall from time to time as they did not announce it. Registering subjects is like hell previously. For those who are good at pushing and cutting lines will come up to the top. There is no need to line up at 12am (there will be students doing that, believe me) since the line will be gone once the door is opened and everyone will just rush in anyway. Make sure you actually register early if you are taking the more popular subjects (Marine Science for the science subjetcs, St. John Ambulance for co-curricular activities, etc) Since seats are limited for every subject (except your major core courses), you will get to know your university friends in close up (literally, imagine a thousand students pushing through a hall like all the aunties rushing into a Malaysian Mega Sales, it makes rushing for Mini Buses in the 90's looks like child's play) Of course, there are internet addicts like me (since you are in Lowyat.NET, you should be!) There are wireless access in the foyer area of SKTM (Sekolah Kejuruteraan dan Teknologi Maklumat, personally getting 350+ kB/s from Microsoft's site, cannot torrent), third floor of SST (Sekolah Sains dan Teknologi, not sure where exactly), library (inside and outside there is a 24 hour study zone, slow and need to register with the library UMTP - Unit Media dan Teknologi Pendidikan) and Kampung E (private cyber cafe there, it was like RM30 for 13 hours or something like that, sorry I cannot provide more information since I do not use it and it is slow). They said there is wireless access in Kampung A, B as well (TM Hotspot) though I have never tried it personally. There are wireless access areas out of campus as well. The nearest cyber cafe is at Kingfisher and some other wireless points at comic shops there. Your average daily life would be attending lectures and finishing assignments. The average day starts with squeezing into the morning bus (7am for the first bus as lectures starts at 8am - varies for different courses) with all your new found friends. Attending tutorial sessions and boring afternoon classes while having lunch at Di Bayu (a cafeteria near the lecture halls) Do note there is a photocopy/binding service next to the cafeteria (5 cents per page though you can get it cheaper outside at 3 cents per page) For those who got night lectures (usually apply to students taking English), do not miss the last bus back to the hostel at 10pm. You will be walking if you do miss the bus. Library is usually a hang out spot for students who wish to have peace and quiet. The library is very cold though (bring a jacket as this applies to lecture halls as well) as the glass is often found with water droplets forming on it during colder seasons. The 24hour study zone available there allows students to study there as well as go online as well (very slow and sometimes problemetic connections with MSN). Usually, it is better off to use the computers available inside the library (booking in advance, one hour per slot) Life during the weekends is normally spent in dormitories catching up with assignments and studies. Of course, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. There are buses that goes to KK town from UMS everyday (at least one every hour). It ranges from RM1.20 to RM1.50 per trip and drops you near Center Point (take the OMO company buses, they cost RM1.20) For those who intend to rent a Kancil, the prices average from RM6 per hour to RM60 per day. Center Point, in my opinion is worse than Leisure Mall in Cheras, but still acceptable. There is a supermarket there and your basic shopping complex shops. Popular book store is on the fifth floor where you can get your stationaries (instead of the expensive ones in the university's korperasi) There are two book stores where students normally take note as most text books are bought here in Kota Kinabalu town (Penguin and Eaton - not sure about the correct name) Do not worry if you do not find them, as usually after the first lecture, shopkeepers from those bookstores will be waiting outside the lecture hall selling the textbooks that you need for that subject. Though, students normally just photocopy the books since it is expensive ranging from RM40 to RM150. There are McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks, Secret Recipe and a GSC cinema here as well for those who miss the city life of Kuala Lumpur. Wisma Merdeka is well known for buying cheap clothing so do not fret if you underpacked. Karamunsing Complex is another area near Center Point (mini Lowyat plaza) where you can get computer related items. A PC fair will be held in Center Point just like the ones in KL and Penang, so do not worry if you still have not gotten a laptop, printer or any other computer related items for your studies. Of course, those who do not wish to travel to KK town can always drop by KF or IP via university buses. Kingfisher has a newly renovated Giant Hypermarket (not that big but still two floors). There are restaurants around here as well for those who are bored of campus food (BTC Cafeteria anyone?) A 10 minutes walk will bring you to a nearby McDonalds. A KFC outlet can be found at Indah Permai as well. There are hair saloons, photocopying shops and other various shops in both areas as well for the convenience of the students there. Those who are health concious, you are not left out. There are people playing football or jogging in the Sports Complex. You can always head there and relax your tensed up muscles during the evening. If you do feel sick, go visit the nearby clinics (bring along your medical card, you paid for it, collect it at your kampung's JAKMAS - department for hostel affairs). A note to those who did not use it, you can claim health products from these clinics. (vitamins and such, again since you have paid for it, make the most out of it) For the Muslims, do not worry about your prayers as there is a mosque in the campus itself. As for Christians, there are numerous cell groups (seniors) that will go to dormitory rooms or approach you in cafeterias during orientation week informing you about their weekly prayers/activities. There are other activities such as Pesta Keamatan, Pesta Tanglung, Pesta Angpau, Pesta Cahaya, etc organized by students where you get to join in the festivities. Maybe join in as a committee member and help in organizing as well. Not forgetting the Students Council (MPP - Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar) where students get to voice out their complaints (university bus always late). Other clubs and societies such as Robocon (those interested in robotics), JCS (Japanese Cultural Society), dancing classes, yoga lessons, fencing, or even MSM (Minggu Suai Mesra for next year's juniors) Those who are adventurous can go visit the places nearby. Kundasang is about an hour or two hours drive away from UMS. Somewhat like Cameron Highlands, it is where the tallest mountain in South East Asia lays, Mount Kinabalu. You can normally find flyers on bus stops in campus promoting some packages for climbing the beautiful mountain. Other places in Kundasang are like the botanical garden, Poring Hot Springs, etc. Other places of interesting activities are like Padas River Rafting, scuba diving, etc. Planning on a simple night out with some friends? Just rent a car and head over to Tanjung Aru First Beach Resort (next to the airport) where you get to see the beach, enjoy some satay or chicken wings, watch the locals dance, etc. Generally, life here is a pace slower than those who stay in KL city. Although, you will have some nights staying up to 2am till 5am (doing assignments, students famous for doing last minute work) It is still fun and enjoyable. Here are some important links for your stay in UMS: http://www.ums.edu.my/ (UMS main site) http://www.ums.edu.my/go.php?sect=sitemap (UMS sitemap) http://wwwkal.ums.edu.my/ (UMS Labuan campus main site) http://bpa.ums.edu.my/ (Bahagian Pendidikan Akademik, where you get your exam schedules, subjects offered for the semester, etc) http://bpa.ums.edu.my/takwim.mht (Time table for the coming year, only in IE7) http://lms.ums.edu.my/ (Learning Management System, most lecturers do not bother, but some do post their lecture notes and announcements here, the username and the password is your matrix number without the dash, activated around second week after your registration) http://www.ums.edu.my/go.php?sect=cstud&p=download (Some forms to download if you have not received your offer letter, can be ignored but just print a copy just to be safe) http://webmail.ums.edu.my/ (Webmail that I have personally never touched) http://www.airasia.com/ (Book your return tickets, Hari Raya/Chinese New Year/Deepavali/next year's tickets now while it is still cheap) The above information is written based on experiences in KK campus. Correct me if I am mistaken anywhere. Attached together is the university song (Bertekad Cemerlang) Do learn it or the seniors might "torture" you. Good luck to you all furthering your studies in UMS! I agree that it's much cheaper but you'll be put along a long queue, especially when every freshmen is heading the gov hospital for the check up. My suggestion is that if you don't face financial constraint, go for the private for medical check-up and instant result in less than 2 days. Otherwise, go for thr gov hospital. How many copies of the documents do we need to certify?
1. Copy of student's IC and parents' IC 2. Copy of birth cert 3. Copy of SPM cert 4. Copy of STPM cert/slip 5. Copy of MUET 6. Sijil Berhenti Sekolah Is 3 copies enough? |

QUOTE(Demonic Wrath @ Jun 21 2008, 01:49 AM) If I am not mistaken, you need 2-3 copies for the Uni itself and another 2 -3 copies for PTPTN manual application. You'll also need some Passport sized photos, this you should prepare more than 5.This post has been edited by lwsn: Jun 21 2008, 11:54 AM |

If I wish to pay the university fee through CIMB bank, do I need to show them the offer letter?
How long does it take to open CIMB bank account? Will they need a couple of days to process the application? How far is the residential college to Kingfisher? This post has been edited by Demonic Wrath: Jun 22 2008, 10:44 PM |

Just bring the offer letter to open a bank account at CIMB bank, can be done on the spot..How long does it take to open CIMB bank account? Will they need a couple of days to process the application? How far is the residential college to Kingfisher? It depends on which residental college you are staying, in UMS there are 5 residental colleges - Kampung A, Kampung B, Kampung C, Kampung D, Kampung E.. While 2 more hostels are located outside UMS, one is in Kingfisher - about 5 minutes distance from UMS, another is Indah Permai - 25 minutes from UMS.. |

Yes, you need to show them the offer letter. How long does it take to open CIMB bank account? Will they need a couple of days to process the application? How far is the residential college to Kingfisher? It will only take a while, I mean less than 1 hour if there isn't any long queue. Don't worry, you can finish applying it in a day. About the distance between residential college to Kingfisher is definitely not walking distance. Probably 10 minutes bus ride from Residential college to get there. Btw, it's hard to get bus within UMS to go to Kingfisher. Plus, during the orientation week or before the actual school date starts, the UMS Kingfisher bus will not be operating. |

QUOTE(area61 @ Jun 23 2008, 03:50 PM) bro im really confused here.i opened the sspn account with rm 20.the lady said it will take a long time to get the passbook.now, i read in the ptptn website that we need rm 500 for parents below rm2000 salary in the sspn account and rm 2000 in the sspn account for parents with salary rm2000 above. this is the buku panduan online http://bpa.ums.edu.my/kemasukan/ Added on June 23, 2008, 3:54 pmso the whole PTPTN saga will be done in the uni,or we,students have to do it by ourselves.i already bought the ptptn online id pin.is it true that for ipta the closing date for ptptn application is on 23 ju QUOTE(knight_57 @ Jun 23 2008, 04:11 PM) wow! my letter has just arrived..now i can finally process all the documents...btw, apparently i am required 2 open another account 4 d ptptn loan, n WTH?? it requires quite a big amount of money deposited...wat a trouble -MONEY,MONEY, To clarify, you need to have a SSPN account, CIMB account and also PTPTN pin number..AND MONEY- And also 4 SETEM HASIL, can be bought from POS OFFICE.. For PTPTN, the officer from PTPTN will be going to UMS to collect the form, I would suggest you do not do anything for the PTPTN, just make sure you got all the SSPN account, CIMB account and also PTPTN pin number ready, and do pay your YURAN as well.. Anybody got any further info for the MSM itinerary as per below in RED, mind to post up a scanned copy?? This post has been edited by Zack Styler: Jun 23 2008, 04:27 PM |

QUOTE(HolyJudgement @ Jun 23 2008, 04:50 PM) just got my offer letter...i'm suppose to be staying at kolej kediaman D...argh so close to E!!!!!nooooooooooo Be thankful for what you get, Kampung D is also good what, Kampung E is still a distance away from Kampung E, and its located at the furthest end from Dewan Canselori, so after your late nite ceramah during MSM, if you are fined by the Commite and forced to walk back to your hostel, those who stay in Kampung A will be the happiest, as their hostel is the nearest to Dewan Canselori, folloed by Kampung B/C/D/E, those who stayed at Kampung E will suffer the most, need to go uphill, downhill, climb staircase lagi, buleh gila bah..Added on June 23, 2008, 5:22 pm QUOTE(HolyJudgement @ Jun 23 2008, 03:38 PM) One copy is for your own keeping - salinan pelajar, one copy - salinan akademik is for UMS...Cheers !!! Kampung B is just next to Kampung A, is leading from the same road up.. |

And for your info previous medic students were and are very well taken care of by UMS, till they feel that they are the chosen ONES and a pampered lot, got a few cases where these students looked down on their lecturers and also scolded them.. Sigh, not a very good attitude from future docs though...Just my 2 sens, don't feel offended ya.. As we do not dare to treat our lecturers like this bah.. |

Hi.. im a 3rd year student at UMS. welcome to all new students.
medic school is partially located at SKTM and SST, and SST do have wifi access.... as well as in all schools... but at limited area (like students lounge/foyer)..... and also in all administration building including dewan canselor n DKP... and dont bother much about where u'll be staying as these are for temporary only. u'll be relocated to diff room n diff kg once msm finish. |

If you stay the hostel outside UMS, either KF/IP, you are quite free, can go for mamak stall to have a drink at night, etc etc.. Total freedom I would say.. BUT BOYS/GIRLS, please be careful, take good care of yourself, and also your belongings, as there are a few RAPES and ROBBING/BREAK IN cases happened before...Even in Kampung This post has been edited by Zack Styler: Jun 24 2008, 11:47 AM |

However, staying in kampung also benefits you all because transport is one of the main problems we all face in uni. If you don't have a vehicle, it's hard for you to go to lecture halls; you might be late or you might just miss the lecture as well. At least there are university buses ready for every hostel. If transportation and financial constraints are not your problems then stay off-campus for more freedom compare to staying in campus. Take Hostel E for example. They have washing machine, dryer, cyber cafe and quite a big dining hall for you to have your meals and as a good place to meet up with your coursemates for group discussion or assignments. |

Hi All, a bunch of us UMS MBA students recently launched an online bulletin board for the UMS community; it's located at: www.umsbb.net
The information shared in this LowYat.net thread is really useful; would greatly appreciate it if you seniors could also drop by umsbb.net and share your knowledge and experience there. The umsbb.net site is a community service website especially meant to help new students coming to UMS -- I remember how lost I was when I first arrived in KK Pls do visit umsbb.net and share your thoughts there on how the site can be improved to make it more useful for the UMS community. Thanks and Cheers, Joe. This post has been edited by Joe Rakyat: Jun 26 2008, 06:21 PM Attached thumbnail(s) |

Nowadays you can get a good room in Kingfisher area for around same price of HEP room (RM150 per month). Plus outside room normally has fridge, internet, washing machine, etc. The HEP room I got does not have these facilities, cooking also susah. So for the freshmen, hope they will be aware about all these issues. But I'm graduating this sem so kind of too late for me! Joewah.. so sad... I kicked myself out from the hostel after 2nd year... too much politics.. too much kaki ampu.. no internet.. I'm better off renting outside living with course mate and help my CGPA up.. |

and seriously... for those who can afford, rm150/month is not much.... but in calculation... staying inside is rm90/month.... you call that around the same price but ya la... better facilities if rent own house. but first must have own transport... kf bus.. for me not much problem... im staying at IP... |

Because of invisible KF bus, I get lots of exercise walking from KF to UMS during undergrad sem break as MBA classes are still in session -- not sure if this is a good or bad thing But overall, UMS and KK is a nice place. Don't want to paint only the negative points, UMS has its good points also. Joe |

wow... can't believe that the time pass really fast... kinda miss the MSM last year... though it's really tiring... to those juniors, make sure you really bring a comfortable shoes for the MSM, those that will not hurt your feet... i'll advised you not to wear new shoes, especially the formal shoes as it will usually hurt your feet at the end of the day...
ok, i'm wondering if anyone going to labuan (those who got Sekolah Perniagaan dan Kewangan Antarabangsa (SPKAL) or Sekolah Sains Informatik Labuan (SSIL) ). to you who have decided to accept the offer to Labuan campus, you might have some shock when you reach the Labuan campus as it's FAR FAR different from KK campus. it's a lot smaller, you don't take bus to your school, but you only need to walk. but, you'll get the benefit to sleep till 7.30am even though you have class at 8am. and the main building in the campus is the 13-storey building. all the dewan kuliah and offices is in there. so, in labuan, you need to wait for the lift to go to the next class and not the bus. the library is located just beside that building. and the dewan utama is located not far away. and mega lab (with lots of new PC) is located at the library building. it's open till 4am and it's quite empty last sem. i guess most of us already brought our new laptop. and wireless is available at hostel's downstair, podium, library. but you'll need to bring your laptop to the multimedia department for them to set the password. and students are allowed to install streamyx at the hostel. you can share it with others. so, after few weeks. you'll see lots of internet cable connection on the floor of the hostel. for foods.... i guess most of you will not get used to the food. i'm really sorry to said that the state of the foods available in the campus is really bad. the choices are limited and it taste.... not so good. so, really be prepared for it. but, you still can go to the town to eat. you can either take bus which will wait for you in the campus or rent a car (there're car rental business done by the students). but i guess like us before, you'll take the bus first since you're not familiar with the road. most of us usually will 'tapao' KFC, pizza or others that's easily available in the town. oh.... labuan students will be given bus coupon to go to the town. but you'll only get it few weeks after that. so for the monent, you'll have to pay for RM3 per way. yaya... it's really expensive. for entertainment, sadly, there's not much entertainment available in labuan. what we usually do is just go to Ujana Kewangan (UK) to buy something or eat pizza and KFC. since it's Labuan, you don't need to pay tax for pizza and kfc. oh ya, there's actually few pub or disco available in labuan. you'll know how to get there from the seniors. there's no need for me to tell you here. and maybe you can find a day to go to all those tourist attraction places. and you can go to KK during the holiday. 3 hours by ferry. and the tickets... i think it's around RM28 if you showed them your matric card. and you can go to brunei as well. only 45 minutes by ferry. the beach is located just in front of the campus. by the evening, you can see lots of students jogging or have a walk at there. and there're a few food stalls at the beach. ok, the hostel... it's a flat. the labuan campus is actually the labuan's government office and the hostel is actually meant for the government servants. but after they built it, they don't want to move there because it's too far away from town and in the end, it's given to UMS. you have 3 rooms with 1 bathroom, 1 toilet, 1 kitchen and a living hall. usually juniors will stay in the room with 3 person pax. but, last year, some us got 2 roommates, some got 1 roomates, and some even stayed alone. usually guys' hostel will have plenty of rooms. so, they can change room easily. but don't be caught by the felo. and girls' hostel... i think there's 11 blocks available (if i'm not mistaken). Beta 7 and Alpha 4 rooms are smaller compared to other blocks. and Gamma block is the best with larger rooms. but, i'm not sure if 1st year students get to stay at there. at first, when you get into the room, you'll get shocked with the condition. that's what we experienced. cause during the MSM in KK, we stayed in Kampung E and the hostel is very nice because it's new. but, i'm sure that you'll get used to it after 1 or 2 weeks. the room will look very bad because it's empty. and some of the girls will stay at taman mutiara, the out campus hostel. it look nicer than the campus hostel but you'll need to wake up really early for 8 am class to catch the bus. oh... and 1 last important thing. when they are transporting you to labuan from KK, you'll will not take your big luggage with you. they will transport it separately. so, pack some extra clothes, towel and toiletries with us in case your luggage arrived late. like us last year, our luggage only arrived few days after us (i think 4 days???). and some are soaked wet as it rained during the journey. i guess that's all i can shared with those students going to labuan. some will like the life there and some not. but just try to enjoy it when you have decided to accept the offer. i'll be back at 6th july. i guess all of you should already arrive at labuan by that time. for the moment, enjoy your MSM. Got PTIs is more like having strays animals running all over the area, get what I mean? They are a nuisance, loitering the streets, building houses everywhere they like, illegal water and electricity connection, selling drugs, throwing rubbish everywhere, BUT if you keep a lookout for them, then its ok what..Sabah is considered much more peaceful if you wanna compare with West Malaysia, especially KL.. Is really a pity you do not want to come to UMS just because of what you read in the newspaper and see and hear from the news.. This post has been edited by Zack Styler: Jun 30 2008, 08:04 PM |

uh louis6... wat u mean plan to study ?
'pendatang tanpa izin' not much trouble la... u r coming to study, n abit of socializing. Unless u stray out much during night time, n dangerous areas at Sabah, they dont pose much danger. Even then, it is still safe n peaceful compare to Semenanjung. |

ya... totally agree that sabah is a lot safer than KL... every place must have some robbery and rape cases... and not every pendatang asing is dangerous... actually KK have developed a lot and it's not that 'kampung' anymore like what some of the ppl think... sabah is a really great place to live... loves of places and nature to explore... when we applied for uni last year.. all of my friends wanted to go to KL so badly and none of them applied for sabah or sarawak because they don't think it's a great place... but i think they missed out a lot... i mean when we're studying at here, we have the time to explore lots of places and knew lots of friends here... i don't think we'll have the time to visit here anymore when we're working...

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « That's correct, and while you are studying you have the time to go and explore Sabah, plenty of time for you to do so, and you can tell your experiences to other people, this is different with going for a trip to Sabah, as there is no way you could manage to explore all the interesting places if compared to students who study at UMS.. |

Hmm, so when's the gathering?
Got the far far away Indah Permai residential college. The good things:- - 2 person per room - terrace house based - wireless available at the room (Very Good Signal) - Shops and Giant supermarket near the area (Within walkable distance) The bad things:- - Toilet is very dirty - No study table at the room - Very far from the campus For the toilet, I like Kg E more. At least it's cleaner and newer. The shower in the house I got is spoiled (Very little or no water coming out). |

I wonder what's the last bus from UMS to IP? I got course at night until 9PM summore..
Yea, I like the variety of foods here.. Chinese rest, KFC, and Malay rest. I think I'll go KFC everyday to enjoy the free WIFI there hahaha... at least it's better than the free WIFI at IP...too slow to download... |

Took Penghantar Etika, Teknik dan Kemahiran Belajar and English for Research Purpose. Any of you have any ideas what is Penghantar Etika about? |

pengantar etika is mostly about moral aspects/ethics of life like abortion, homosexual, war, suicide, and so on... its quite interesting. Da lecturer also ok la... he'll make da students give opinions and personal views. Anyone wants book for dat subject ask me. I got 2 copies. Else u'll end up paying 35 for that. I give for free

QUOTE(Zack Styler @ Jul 10 2008, 10:48 PM) 1) More freedom if compared to Kg. The first 3 is correct. There's more variety of food because there's a lot of shoplots outside. There's also a Giant supermarket near the shoplot so we can get our necessities there. It's very convenient for me. It's peaceful there too compared to KG.2) More variety of food outside. 3) Much more relaxed environment. 4) No water disruption if compared to Kg. (well at least for my stay in IP at that time) 5) The bus schedule you can refer to the notice board on the IP/UMS bus stops and also at the IP HEP there. You can also use free WIFI at the KFC instead of subscribing the IP wireless. Of course, it'll be better to use the campus's WIFI. There's water disruption now (for my house). Sometimes there's no water available and it's hard to wash clothes. This is why they provided us the big pail - To fill up the water so we can bath and wash stuff when there's water disruption. During my stay in KG, there's no water disruption. The buses don't follow the bus schedule. Here's my advice:- Normally after the first bus come, the 2nd and 3rd bus will come after around 5-10 minutes. I've noticed the girls standing in the middle of the road so they can get on the bus. Please don't ever stand in the middle of the road to wait for the bus. |

But actually the whole Sabah is facing this water disruption problem due to the water pressure is too low..
That's why mostly every houses have their own water tank and water pump.. |

Actually it's very subjective for opinions living at IP. Each house is maintained differently - some houses are in good condition while others are in very bad condition.
If you're lucky, then you get those with good condition and life will be a lot better..I can only say the room downstairs is the worst. The room upstairs are wood floor while the room downstairs is a modified room from a kitchen. This post has been edited by Demonic Wrath: Jul 11 2008, 09:27 AM |

Yes it is true as previously a house is only for 7 people where 2 people each in the double room upstairs and 1 in the single room, while 2 people will be sleeping in the living room..
Now they want to cram more people in, so the kitchen has been modified to became another room... |

yo demonic, sry for not replying ur sms previously as i dun have any $$$ to sms. this sem my ptptn is blocked due to my poor below 2.0 cgpa in 1st sem. even tho my 2nd sem result is improving a lot still it'll be cleared within the next sem.
thomas calc is rly important, it's a rly good book to read n helps u a lot with numerous calculations. my advice to u is if possible buy all the reference books the lect gave. usually a book for a subject. now my everyday schedule is 8.00 - 4.00/5.00 pm except monday 9.00 - 5.00pm... so i'll be very2 bz this sem. |

For me, my first 2 choices are in UMS, and then 3rd till last is in UPM. My fist two choices are related to education though, so it must be in the first 4.

The nearest shopping complex from UMS will be One Borneo, and walking distance will be roughly 15 minutes though. It is true that UMS is located near to sea, but not all areas in UMS can view it though. Another thing. UMS's feng shui might be good as you said (I am not sure about it) but if you say that UMS is the largest and most beautiful university then it might be true.

Is this thread still alive? T^T Please reply if any of you are reading.
I plan to take on a degree in TESL there. What I would like to know is the lecturer's and course quality. Is it up to par? And, from the bottom of my soul, I sincerely do not mean to offend in any way. And how is the campus lifestyle? |

Okay I am from UMS school of education (though I m not taking any education related course)....I plan to take on a degree in TESL there. What I would like to know is the lecturer's and course quality. Is it up to par? And, from the bottom of my soul, I sincerely do not mean to offend in any way. And how is the campus lifestyle? From my observation and interaction with some tesl student there, I am pretty against it if you have already a band 5 or 6 students since some of them just get band 2 in muet yet they able to enrolled in the course, for lecturer quality, I would said when we r uni, we shall no longer depend on spoon feeding, lecturer just give us guideline, the rest we shud find it ourselves... p.s.: if any tesl students passby, don't be offended ohh... this just my opinions~~~~ |

Yes, I received a high band 5 in MUET but I'm quite determined to continue something in English or English Literature. T^T I'm sure the course quality has nothing to do with the student's quality... right? Yeah, form 6 was an eye opener to not be spoon fed, so I don't expect lecturers to be any different. Don't mind me asking but what course are you in? What's your point of view in UMS campus life so far? |

No worries, points not taken. However, do allow me to express my thoughts on what I've learnt in UMS so far. Indeed, there are quite a number of students among us who scored unpleasant MUET results but some of them had improved a lot ever since the semester started.
Meaning, people do change to improve themselves. Even if your coursemates did badly in their exams, you have to make sure that you don't because at the end of the day, you are on your own. Having a Band 5 in MUET doesn't guarantee you a 3 pointer above in the uni exams. In fact, some of my friends who scored 3.7 in STPM, scored lower than 2.7 during previous semesters in UMS. The TESL lecturers are at their best in supporting and helping us only if we ask, but many didn't (shy perhaps). Anyway, why so serious?!?! Come join us la! why there's no UMS - KAL students in this thread??
by the way, coming to UMS is not that bad... if you try to look at the +ve side. at least you get to travel to many places like mount KK, kundasang, sarawak or even to brunei... it only take 45 mins to go to brunei from labuan.. so much nearer compared going to KK (which will need 3 hours)... i still remember the 07/08 thread... now i'm in 2nd year d.... haiz... |

Hmm, I am in sport science, strictly not physical education or any education related programme
Actually I do agree student's quality have nothing with course's quality, but I feel more excited to study in a competitive enviroment~~~ Campus life so far so good, why don't try to challenge yourself by selecting other Unis? |

QUOTE(ooi33 @ Jan 30 2009, 10:47 PM) Hmm, I am in sport science, strictly not physical education or any education related programme I agree. Environment does play a role, but it is also up to you to decide whether you excel or plummet, XD Sports science! I find the subject very interesting, but it's just not my cup of tea. Actually I do agree student's quality have nothing with course's quality, but I feel more excited to study in a competitive enviroment~~~ Campus life so far so good, why don't try to challenge yourself by selecting other Unis? Well its more of a personal reason that I don't go out to another university. Of course, that doesn't mean I'm settling for something less than the best. ;D Or at least, I'm trying. |

I agree wholeheartedly, being in UMS and having no car sucks. Lol. What more when you're staying in KF. Hey...didn't know there's a thread for UMS 2008/2009 intake.
