I have a question. I'm having my SPM this year. And i'm most probably gonna start my Pre U in January next year. But if I'm doing SAM ( South Australian Matriculation ) , will I still be able to do UK Law Degree Transfer program? Because some of the UK Law Degree Transfer program requires A Levels, and I do not have any intention of doing A Levels. Opinions anyone? (:

I know one friend in Brickfields Asia who did either SAM or Ausmat (not sure) and is currently in the UK. Call the college to check it out

Do lawyers need maths?
If they do,  how do lawyers use maths?

lol... you need maths to count your expenses, fees and debts...
later on, to count your fees and income and more debts... rclxms.gif

I'm a F5 student currently and i wanna ask that , Besides Public Univercities , any private colleges are recognised by the Bar and the Jpa? Thanks

There are numerous private colleges out there in Malaysia that offer external programs to UK transfer programs. ATC, Bricfields, KDU, Taylors, HELP, SEGi etc. As to whether the degree from that particular is recognised or not, it has to be checked with the Bar Council's website. Those recognised uinversities have already listed on their website.

Hi Noname,

Actually I entered IIUM in 94 using my A'Levels results so it is possible but I am not sure about the current situation. The only drawback (or advantage in my opinion) is that you will have to study Arabic and minor in Islamic Law. You have to pass Level 6 of Arabic to graduate (basically be able to read the Arabic newspaper). Why don't you try there? During my time it was really cheap less than 10K for four years including board.

BTW, a lot of my classmates are doing really well and although in my year there was only two chinese law students, both of us did well. One very high profile female opposition DAP politician was also from IIUM, one year my senior.

Was hoping some of the LYN members could help me find a solution to my problem.

Here's what it is.

I will be enrolling in an LLB programme starting January 2012.

However, I'm not sure whether to do the UKT or the UOL programme. The main aspects affecting my decision would be cost and time of graduation.

For the UOL programme

The exams are only conducted during May/June every year.

Jan 2012-Sept 2013 (1 yr) - considered to be one year in ref to the above statement
Sept 2013-Sept 2014 (1 yr)
Sept 2014 -May/ June 2015 (1 yr)

May June 2015 - July 2016 - CLP
CLP Results released in Sept

Chambering period
Sept 2016 - June 2017

For the UKT programme

Jan 2012- Sept 2012 (1 yr)
Sept 2012 - Sept 2013 (1 yr)
Sept 2013 - May June 2014 (1 yr)

May June 2014 - July 2015 - CLP
CLP results released in Sept.

Sept 2015 - June 2016 will be the chambering period.

I guess what i'm asking here is whether a year later or earlier will make a difference? Also the cost of the UKT is much higher, is it really worth it to spend RM100K + for a year overseas?

All replies are much appreciated. biggrin.gif

Well, from my personal experience with UKT, it is worth it. It may seem like a big investment but it gives you a totally different experience.

Perhaps if you're not sure, you can try start with UOL and if you want to transfer, you can do so later on... there's still a choice... (but transferring to London would be much more expensive than a uni outside London.)

a plus for doing a transfer is the benefit of travelling all over europe during the year... you won't feel like coming back after that. biggrin.gif the student visa + uk student status gives you a lot of benefits you won't enjoy as a tourist the next time you visit europe... (that's student's life most people would miss a lot)

as for your concern on the time needed, i believe it doesn't really matter... even if you passed everything within the time frame, it doesn't guarantee a job right after the results are released unless you have connections or very exceptional that you managed to secure one before the result is out... just enjoy your student years and try getting some attachment for experience... it makes a difference regardless of what you think when you're doing it.

try getting advice from colleges that offers both programmes instead of those offering only one... wink.gif

Thank you for your reply. Haha, I was worried that by the time I graduated, peers my age would be LAs already compared to me still chambering.

Btw, are you a lawyer?

peers or not, there are pupils who start their pupillage at 21 years old...so unless u fall into the 21 or 22 category, you still ay find yourself taking instructions from younger LAs.

Erm I would like to ask why everyone is talking about transferring to UK by doing the UOL external program?isn't it an external program which is meant to be completed locally instead of going to the overseas?if transferring to the UK is really the case, what are the criteria that have to be fulfilled in order to transfer?thanks in advance for any reply!

If u want to use UOL to transfer, it is possible, like my friend cousin, Cardiff accepted her but condition is she has to redo her year 1 at Cardiff again. It's up to the university to decide so we cant really tell u the exact requirement.

Well, I'm not sure where your cousin did it, but according to BAC, Cardiff allows second year transfers provided you meet the requirement of 50% in your first year and 60% in your second.

Hmm, yeah. Guess I'll just go with the flow then. I've already enrolled in the UOL programme but they told me I've up to the end of the year to finalize my decision (i could still switch to UKT). Thanks though smile.gif

You're welcome.
I'm not a lawyer yet. Will only start my chambering this month. Anyway, I had friends my age who are already LAs but also others older than me who are still in the course. No worries, let your ego down if you want to make the most of your learnings. biggrin.gif
About the transfer programme, I think it is still possible for you to transfer to London even if you started the UOL. (correct me if I'm wrong)
All the best. icon_rolleyes.gif
