hi everyone,
i know i have been missing for a long time. but i have a sad news to share, and i hope other Westie lovers and potential Westie owners beware of this situation.
during a visit to the vet, Scubby's doctor found that his hind legs barely touches the floor when he walks. after doing an x-ray, the result showed us that Scubby has Hip Dysplasia. This is an incurable hereditary problem that is passed on from the dam and sire to their puppies.
QUOTE
Hip dysplasia, a malformation of the hip joint resulting in a poor fit between the head of the femur bone and the hip socket. This condition can be alleviated by surgery, at some cost to dog and owner.
Because dysplastic dogs often produce dysplastic puppies, buyers should ask if both the sire and the dam of the puppy in which they are interested have been rated clear of hip dysplasia. Do not take yes for an answer without seeing a certificate, and ask for a copy to take to your veterinarian.
http://www.dogs.info/dogbreeds/westie/from now on, scubby needs to take glucosamine and chondroitin supplements for the rest of his life. there is no cure for this problem, just delay as much as we can. he will have a very painful life when he grows older and he would not be able to walk or jump like other dogs.
irene kang is selling her puppies again. so if you are planning to buy her westie puppy, please consider this factor because it is a lifelong commitment - both emotionally and financially.
before you buy a puppy from the pet shop, make sure you find out the dam & sire's health condition. irene promised us that her dogs are of good quality and healthy, but now i know she was just trying to sell us her puppy and make money...
