I'm with kobe on this. I felt that the dialogue wasn't that inspiring to begin with and the best lines were probably those spoken in the Na'vi language (the subtitles were in Malay though). Lines like "let's dance" and "I figured he wouldn't look up" had me cringing.

There were a few scenes which had me licking at my lips and on the edge of my seat like the one where Sully was chased by that ruthless 'panther' like creature, when he wanted to capture his Irkhan (his flying mount) and that final battle with Quaritch. But yeah, the one that stands out would be the morning after Sully and Neytiri 'mated' (how was it done anyways? Did they connect their 'usb's? Thx to the Malaysian censors and their disregard for animated porn, we're left with our own imaginations).

The storyline wasn't brilliant, certainly not original in any way. It had a little of Dances with the Wolves, Pocahontas, Ferngully and The Last Samurai, but what it succeeded in was creating a beautiful world and giving the characters meaning and substance. You wanted Neytiri to plant another arrow down Quaritch's throat so bad. You wanted the Na'vi ppl to accept Sully becoz you felt for him. You wept in your heart when the tree was brought down. You whooped in joy when Eywa answered and the Pandora inhabitants rallied to bring down the greedy humans.

I hope you didn't mean it the way Jake meant it before he kissed her.

Btw I have no problem with the cast. Worthington isn't very impressive but he takes nothing away from the movie. His biggest weakness is his accent. As for Stephen Lang's colonel Miles, I have nothing bad to say about him. Larger than life and super badass. Someone I looooove to hate.

hahaha yeah, the dialogue felt weak and uninspired, and com[pared to 300, the inspirational speech was meh. and i cried during alien, i cried during titanic, i shed manly tears as leonidas took the spear in his chest and i cried in T2 when arnie melted himself at the end, but here, i didnt cry, and i hate the fact that i didnt cry sad.gif

especially for a movie thats so goddamn beautiful, the story didnt touch me one bit, well cept maybe for the time when hometree fell, but that was leaning more towards shock as i just couldnt imagine a future where humans would think that genocide was ok, especially with our history. the story just felt weak at that part, as to why they would so wantonly and callously cause that much destruction on the whim of one man.

ps: cant wait for the day they make a mass effect movie using the same technology, hopefully they will, waaaaay cooler story anyway XD tongue.gif

Lang to Avatar is like Christoph Waltz is to Basterds. Bad ass? Damn right.

But Giovanni Ribisi was awful and the military look like a team of doofuses.

Sorry but no dice. That movie wasted a good premise on wanton action scenes, albeit some really good action scenes. That movie was even less original than Avatar.

I'd say they're on the same level. Avatar has nothing original except for the graphics.

I'll have to disagree there. He was as much a slimy doofus as the Paul Reiser character from Aliens, which you can pretty much bet Cameron modeled after. My only regret is that he didnt get his proper comeuppance like what Reiser got in Aliens.

Added on December 20, 2009, 5:26 pmThe world of Pandora itself, together with its myriad of finer details, is without a doubt more original than the whole of District 9, of which the only original thing was the premise.

defaultname will have a hard time with this, being a pretty hardcore lover of both movies. brows.gif

Well, the premise of District 9 was definitely far more original than what we have in Avatar, and the delivery could've been better, but this is a movie working at about 10% of Avatar's budget and from a relative newbie director in comparison to the god that is Cameron. D9 pips it for me becoz with the limited amount of money it had to work around, it surpassed all expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. The main actor, a relative unknown, had more acting chops than Worthington! Avatar is right up there, behind D9 and above Star Trek for me, but the fact that it cost a small country's GDP and then some, the expectations were massive, and sad to say, its not even Cameron's best film.

Well depends on how you see it. Considering a project in Pandora, I was hoping for a more astute and bad-ass leader. And they got Ribisi.

Bout originality - that's what I meant with graphics. And I agree with satsugai, I cared about Wikus wayyy more than anyone else in Avatar.

Despite the obvious flaws in this movie, I enjoyed it more than any other movie I've seen this year.

This is how good Avatar is. The flaws doesn't matter to me(the so-so story, sometimes boring dialogues, sometimes too preachy, some questionables actions and motives that doesn't fit, bad acting from few of the actors/actresses.) The effects gave life to this story, made it artsy and at least it has a decent enough story. So unlike transformers where the story and effects are so terrible.

I dont simply lump the magical details like the small jellyfish-like floating stuff, the way a Na'vi physically bonds with the wildlife, the plant that rapidly retracts its leaves and petals when touched etc together with the visuals. Someone had to think of them first. All those details add a incalculable amount of wonderment to the story.

Also, I found Wikus to be very annoying second time around. Guy just doesnt know how to shut the f*** up.

The details are amazing and intricate but of course there has to be something "original" somewhere, else it'll be a total rip off laugh.gif

agree on the rather bland dialogue and predictable storyline but still quite nice to watch due to the awesome effect.

the last time i had this kinda mind blowing experience is when i watch jurrasic park.

avatar's concept and feel are very similiar to studio ghilibli's productions but with bigger budget and more advance effects.

i can feel some similarity with laputa, princess monocoke, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.etc
