Despite the obvious flaws in this movie, I enjoyed it more than any other movie I've seen this year.

This is how good Avatar is. The flaws doesn't matter to me(the so-so story, sometimes boring dialogues, sometimes too preachy, some questionables actions and motives that doesn't fit, bad acting from few of the actors/actresses.) The effects gave life to this story, made it artsy and at least it has a decent enough story. So unlike transformers where the story and effects are so terrible.
*
and therein lies the problem, overlooking the flaws cos of its so pretty. imagine going out with a girl who's so f***ing hot she puts megan fox to shame, you would get so caught up in her beauty that you overlook her personality, her vacuous vapid absoolutely boring and predictable personality, her looks excite you at first, but as you get to know her better you find out that she has no deapth, no soul, doesnt shock, amuse or tingle ur senses as much as you initlly expected it to. the excitement ceases. you realise that she has nothing to offer besides a pretty face. you leave.

tis a pity that most guys think with their dicks and would stay and fall in love with the pretty face and not consider the personality sad.gif

The effects were outstanding but the acting, dialogue, storyline were subpar. It's like Pocahontas of the 21st century.
I disagree, but more with your choice of words than with your sentiments. I don't think the storyline was subpar at all. I think it was just formulaic and tired, but it was executed terrifically well. Give the same story (and the same CGI and 3D) to Roland Emmerich or Michael Bay and see what happens. biggrin.gif

avatar's concept and feel are very similiar to studio ghilibli's productions but with bigger budget and more advance effects.

i can feel some similarity with laputa, princess mononoke, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.etc

+1 I am not the only one to notice this similarity. smile.gif

the story just felt weak at that part, as to why they would so wantonly and callously cause that much destruction on the whim of one man.
Who said it was because of "the whim of one man"? It was because, as Giovanni Ribisi said, the little grey rock that sells for $20 million a kilo. biggrin.gif

Watch Avatar again and you'll see the same with Jack f***ing Sew Leeeeeeeee.

Also, a movie about a bunch of people fighting over a material called unobtainum cannot be taken seriously. tongue.gif

there are 24 hours day, and for some of em we have nbtd, thus we fill it with pointless arguments over the internet discussing our passions, giving our opinions(cos the internet is probably the only venue where people give a shit bout a persons opinions nowadays) and generally talking cock.

what i dont get is why people like you loooooooooove to call us out using "arguing as if ur the creator and it means so much to you" , we get it, we're just the end consumer, the director will never know or give a shit about what we think and how we feel would have no significance whatsoever on his/her life. so yeah, if youre not gonna join in and are just gonna be a buzzkill, eff off ><"

Ebert just gave Avatar the Special Jury prize or it's the 11th best mainstream picture of 2009.

For the full list, head over to ebert's site.

ok, sorry, from now on ppl shouldnt compare, give opinion, reviews on movie.

Newspaper should stop writing reviews!

ign and gamespot should stop issueing reviews about games.

Critics should leave their job.

everybody who watched a movie must Shuddap when they come out, and make sure to keep their mouth sealed.

Talk about hak bersuara.

oh and Lowyat forum should close down cause everything here is base on opinion, and since we are not the creator, we shouldnt give opinion.

U should write that opinion of yours too, since u werent the creator of opinions.

Doesn't mean its origin/purpose need not be explained.

That's the definition of a McGuffin. If you are really irritated by the lack of explanation then I can see how you could not fully enjoy the movie. Its use is absolutely not essential to the story at all. The point is, once man finds something valuable and untouched he will plunder it all by any means necessary, and especially if the enemy is technically-inferior. I'm 100% certain Cameron deliberately left it out of the movie!

Watched Avatar (not 3D) in 1utama.

There were no english subtitles, when talking in alien language.

Did other cinemas have same problem?

For me

Storywise
D9>Basterds>Avatar>Star Trek

"Fun factor" wise
Basterds>Star Trek>Avatar>D9

Entertainment factor
Avatar>Basterds>D9>Star Trek

Overall cinema experience
Avatar>D9>Star Trek>Basterds

For me la. =D

The effects are still part of the movie just as much as the story or action or music.

If the movie is a chicken chop, the story would be a chicken while the effects would be the sauce.

Transformers would be like having a chicken chop with eatable sauce and rotten chicken.

Avatar is like a chicken chop with normal chicken and ambrosiac sauce. The storyline, acting and dialogue are not great, but they're still decent enough and better than most other movies out there.
