QUOTE(QuickFire @ Dec 19 2009, 02:01 PM) I woke up today with Avatar still in my mind. I'm not sure if this is a masterpiece just yet, but Cameron surely has done something quite spectacular with this. And I'm not just talking about the technical aspects of the film. The storytelling and pacing here are unmatched by any other movie I've seen this year. Let the hype cool down a little. It wasn't really that awesome. |

What I felt missing from the movie was the emotional attachment to the characters. It's very unlike James Cameron who usually comes out with sub-cool action movies with characters that I really care for. After all, the characters are the one that actually breathes life to the movie and not the CGI, they're just the limbs. In this case, the best limbs I've ever seen.
The problem with CGI movies is that they age whether you like it or not. Take away the amazing effects, the movie has nothing to offer. They have action sequences but how many of them are worthy to be in the ranks of the legends? I see where kobe is going with his comments and I actually feel the same. The acting was the problem IMO. I wonder what people see in Sam Worthington? Dull as hell. The effects were outstanding but the acting, dialogue, storyline were subpar. It's like Pocahontas of the 21st century. The movie (a James Cameron movie, surprisingly) lacks that edge that blows other movies aside the way T2, Alien, True Lies, even The Abyss did. The villains were laughable and my biggest problem is the cast selection. had they got better actors and characters, I'm sure the movie might be a tad better. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Dec 20 2009, 05:04 PM) I hope you didn't mean it the way Jake meant it before he kissed her. Lang to Avatar is like Christoph Waltz is to Basterds. Bad ass? Damn right. Btw I have no problem with the cast. Worthington isn't very impressive but he takes nothing away from the movie. His biggest weakness is his accent. As for Stephen Lang's colonel Miles, I have nothing bad to say about him. Larger than life and super badass. Someone I looooove to hate. But Giovanni Ribisi was awful and the military look like a team of doofuses. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Dec 20 2009, 05:23 PM) I'll have to disagree there. He was as much a slimy doofus as the Paul Reiser character from Aliens, which you can pretty much bet Cameron modeled after. My only regret is that he didnt get his proper comeuppance like what Reiser got in Aliens. Well depends on how you see it. Considering a project in Pandora, I was hoping for a more astute and bad-ass leader. And they got Ribisi.Added on December 20, 2009, 5:26 pmThe world of Pandora itself, together with its myriad of finer details, is without a doubt more original than the whole of District 9, of which the only original thing was the premise. Bout originality - that's what I meant with graphics. And I agree with satsugai, I cared about Wikus wayyy more than anyone else in Avatar. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Dec 20 2009, 05:42 PM) I dont simply lump the magical details like the small jellyfish-like floating stuff, the way a Na'vi physically bonds with the wildlife, the plant that rapidly retracts its leaves and petals when touched etc together with the visuals. Someone had to think of them first. All those details add a incalculable amount of wonderment to the story. The details are amazing and intricate but of course there has to be something "original" somewhere, else it'll be a total rip off Also, I found Wikus to be very annoying second time around. Guy just doesnt know how to shut the f*** up. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Dec 21 2009, 07:25 AM) That's what I've been saying all along. A simple story is inconsequential as long as the movie rises above it. But Avatar didn't do it for me. In Star Wars, even the escort of Chewbacca to the prison was suspenseful as hell, the motorbike chase in T2, etc greatly affected the whole movie and the characters. In that aspect, Cameron decides to boast the CGI effects with the beautiful Eywa, the plants, animals, so on and that by itself was amazing. He didn't do much to the characters, everything seem so convenient...I should be watching it for a second time next week maybe. Let's see if my opinion changes. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Jan 24 2010, 01:59 PM) I might watch this a third time, just to check out the 3D in different cinemas here. I think I read in a post that there is no surcharge for the 3D glasses at cineleisure? So it costs only RM12 there? It's RM 17. Another RM5 for the glasses.I will choose the middle row this time, to see if the depth of field is indeed better. Twice I watched from the 4th row, by choice, because I always thought 3D will work best if the screen fills your entire vision. But the depth perception left a lot to be desried. I watched it for the 2nd time in MV last week, my friend chose the 3rd row from the back, and on the side. Wasn't pleasant at all. |
