guys, I just bought myself a hard disk enclosure, attempting to repair my PS3 now smile.gif

I tried using a Linux-equipped notebook to reformat last night but can't work. Even with the enclosure, the hard disk isn't detected off the bat, you need to go under admin tools where it appears as a pool of unrecognised data, and format it from there. I wonder how bad the damage to the hard disk is, as if it can't be read off the bat, there's something seriously wrong with it.

I'm documenting the process now, and if there are any requests, I'll put up a guide for it as it might come in handy in the future smile.gif

zz useless Sony. ask me bring my machine there go check doh.gif

AFAIK any OS will not recognise and mount it because PS3 internal HDD uses proprietary filesystem. However the partitions can be seen by diskmgmt.msc tool under start->run in windows machine or gparted in linux.

I would try to go to Sora's house and try out his PS3 but problem is if his PS3 formats my hard disk, his data will be gone when he puts his hard disk back into his machine.
Y would ur friend's (Sora) data be gone if he just unplug his HDD and put it back? No formatting rite?

because the hard disk will require a format even if you transfer it across machines, AFAIK. can anyone clarify this?

i think some of us still have the MD5 96e9def601672c5abcbb4604bb2346f1 2.40 on our thumbdrives

yup, the 40Gb model is different, u need the FW ready when you boot with fresh HDD. 60/80GB models can just boot directly.

yea Sora should have it, I think. but if the file is the same throughout, why should it differ then? hmm weird seriously.

need to download the latest FW on your thumbdrive cos when you boot a 40GB with a "new" HDD, the system will ask for the FW

on the 60/80GB, even with a new HDD, i rmb the system will just boot.

I just reconnected my HDD back to my PC and found out something very interesting. the HDD was untouched! means the PS3 didn't write anything to it.

I think I need to try another update file.

cannot, as I already formatted it to NTFS beforehand as per the guide smile.gif

I think I can come up with a theory on why the crashes occur - the flash memory was update to 2.40 kernel, but the hard disk remained untouched. hence, the discrepancy caused the PS3 to crash upon start up. this theory is further supported by the fact that even after 'updating' a few times using a freshly-reformatted hard disk, no files were written to it. plus, the PS3 refused to accept any update below 2.40.

as for why it crashes PS3s indiscriminately, I'm guessing it's the hard disk brand. Sony has a few suppliers from what I heard. but then again, it could be anything.

I'm waiting for a fix that's 100% working to test out. if that doesn't work, something is wrong with the PS3 itself and I'll send it for RMA.

Eh, in that case I think ur problem a bit different from most 2.4 problems... US ppl say after formatting and inserting back the HDD the PS3 can boot-up normally into the XMB... that means the FW hasn't been flashed onto the chip, but something in the HDD cache was affected/corrupted, causing the PS3 to hang at startup...

Hmm... wonder how will Sony help those who kena this problem...

depends on what model is in question.

the 40GB model will require a reformat with every hard disk swap, whereas the 60GB and 80GB models can swap hard disks without any reformatting. if the 40GB requires part of the OS to be written to the hard disk, that's the bit that's causing the problem.

of course, I'm just hypothesizing, and I may be wrong smile.gif

I'm optimistic about the whole thing. hopefully the fix will er, fix it. if it doesn't, there's always RMA.

either way, I'm doing a low-level format on the hard disk now.

Erm.., u mean there's a possibility of a fix without taking out the HDD, formatting, etc etc? I mean, how is a Sony issued fix (if it's via another FW) going to solve a problem on a PS3 that can't even boot into the XMB and perform a system update? And most importantly, maintain all the saved data on the PS3 HDD?
